Yesterday marked two firsts for us! We held our first evening Adoption Event as well as our first Adoption Event at the City of Santee's Summer Concert! 🎶🎵

We enjoyed a live performance from Upstream Music, connected with the community to share our adoptable dogs and our rescue mission, and raised awareness for the plight of rescue and shelter dogs across the nation!

Congratulations to the Weeden family, our gift basket raffle winners, who selected our coffee themed gift basket!
We appreciate everyone in the community who visited our pups, entered our raffle, played our miniature crane game, and donated as it is your generosity that makes our dog rescue work possible ❤️

A special thank you goes out to Special Events Supervisor, Becky Lowndes, to Recreation Coordinator, Alicia Curtis, and to the City of Santee for inviting us to be a part of their fun family event!
We are looking forward to attending again in July!

Oreo's suture removal happened today!
After an additional 5 days of moderate exercise restriction, he will be overjoyed to get to hang out with all of his friends again!

Oreo was one of 5 Pomeranians dumped in our area of Blossom Valley.

An ultrasound was performed at the Veterinary Imaging Center of San Diego (VICSD) followed by exploratory surgery at Mast Blvd Pet Hospital. After a thorough search, Oreo's second testicle was not located. It was determined that fatty tissue caused interference in the ultrasound which resulted in the false positive identification of his "missing" testicle. Our vet believes the undescended testicle may simply not exist. That said, we cannot say he is medically cleared as an overall precaution, even if the likelihood of still having the undescended testicle is low.

We have raised $450 out of $1500 for Oreo's medical procedures, through the generosity of our followers!
Any and all donations are greatly appreciated and will go directly to our spunky Pom, Oreo.
Any additional money, beyond our $1500 goal, will go directly to the dogs in our care.

Prince has officially been adopted!

Prince was dumped, with four other Pomeranians, a block away from us in late March of this year. Four were recovered over a two-day search and one was confirmed deceased on a neighboring property.

If you missed the story of the Pomeranians dumped in Blossom Valley, here is the original post to bring you up to speed:

If you missed the story of how we rescued Prince & Bear, here is Bear's adoption post which details their harrowing tale:
https://www.facebook.com/heartofgoldsshelter/posts/844260014397808

Prince was pampered by our neighbor, owner of FURology Pet SPaw Inc., and her experienced team to bring his fur back to life with a fullness!
He went in as a messy floof and came out as a regal floof!👑

When Prince was posted for adoption, we received an expected flood of emails and interest. He joined us for an Adoption Event at Kahoots Feed and Pet - Rancho San Diego, CA where he met several potential adopters.
One lovely couple in particular spent a great deal of time with Prince. They had the know-how and ability to make sure our little escape artist stayed out of trouble. After all, he was expertly climbing the x-pen during this event to remind us of how intelligent and resourceful he is!
This couple completed our adoption process to make him a part of their family and the rest is history!

Prince, we knew your bubbly, outgoing personality and gorgeous floof would have potential adopters lining up to snag you! While there were countless applicants, it was going to take the right home to ensure that your escape artist tendencies were kept in check as it takes a good deal of foresight, planning, exercise, and stimulation to keep a smart apple like you safe and secure.
Your new mom and dad are such a sweet and loving couple! You fit in so perfectly with their lifestyle and are enjoying the spoils of your new kingdom!
You have overcome the toughest of situations all with a smile across your face. May we all aspire to be as resilient as you, sweet Prince!

Bear has officially been adopted!

Bear was dumped, with four other Pomeranians, a block away from us in late March of this year. Four were recovered over a two-day search and one was confirmed deceased on a neighboring property.

It can be exhausting to retell some of these rescue stories, so the story below was not included in Carmelo's adoption announcement. I have had a chance to reflect and gather my thoughts, so enjoy our harrowing adventure!

Bear took me on quite the journey during his rescue and he was not recovered on the night of being dumped.
My neighbor and I hopped out of the vehicle and went searching. I spotted Prince & Bear together for a moment, then Bear ran right, and Prince ran left. I was forced to make a quick decision on which direction to continue my chase, keeping in mind that I had nothing but my phone's flashlight in a pitch-black area of an open field. With Prince's bright fur color I knew I had a better chance at capturing him and went left in his direction. I proceeded to capture Prince a short time after with half of his body pushing through a wire fence that bordered the property.
With Prince in hand, I immediately ran towards the direction Bear had gone but couldn't see or hear a thing. After searching for a while longer, and running out of steam, I ended the search and regrouped with my neighbor.
The following afternoon, I was able to make contact with the folks that owned the property the Poms were dumped on. I apprised them of the situation and left my contact information in case a sighting occurred. I was contacted by them in the early evening, informing me of a dead dog on their property that was noted while they trimmed the lawn. After quickly making my way to their property, I did indeed confirm that it was one of the younger Poms. The state of the poor pups' body is one that I will not share on social media as it was far too graphic. What I will say is that an animal of some sort got to the poor Pom pup. May they rest in peace.
The folks on the property were going to have the city conduct a dead animal removal, and I went about my way.
A short time after leaving, I was called again. They spotted a dark colored dog sniffing around the deceased Pom's body. I was just about to eat when they called, so I literally threw my food into the fridge, hopped in the van, and raced over. With a slip lead in hand, I spotted Bear immediately. He spotted me too and took off running towards a water drainage ditch that spans several properties. It's important to note that we're talking about Blossom Valley, where each property can include many acres of land. After crawling under multiple fences and running along the drainage ditch system, we finally reached a dead end. Bear was cornered and, naturally, growled and snapped at me. I was able to get the slip lead around him and we slowly made our way out of that ankle-injury-waiting-to-happen drainage ditch.
Bear reeked of the putrid smell of death, just like the other Poms we captured, but his fur was different in that it was tightly matted down to the skin.
He would not let me pick him up, nor could I drag him practically 'over the meadow and through the woods'. Sweating and panting like a dog, I looked around to see where exactly I was. As luck would have it, we were near the very back end of our neighbor's property. Her gate that leads to the drainage ditch was slightly open a little distance away, as she had left it open in case the Poms found their way to her property! I was beyond relieved! Bear and I slowly made our way out of the drainage ditch and onto our neighbors' property. With her permission, I was able to place Bear in her outdoor crate to await my pick-up in the morning as he would need to head to the San Diego County Department of Animal Services to complete his "stray" hold.
After making sure he had water (and food provided by our neighbor later that evening), I took a photo and let him know I'd see him in the morning.
What a rescue mission!

After receiving a complimentary bath and shave down from our neighbor and her amazing team at FURology Pet SPaw Inc., to relieve him of all those mats, he was ready to hit the adoption circuit for a new lease on life!

We knew this shy boy would need a special someone to gently bring Bear out of his shell to show him that the world could be a safe place.
When we were contacted by past adopters of Tigger (formerly known as Trigger), it was immediately apparent that Bear hit the jackpot!
Past adopters of ours are able to skip most of our usual adoption process as they've already been through it before. In meeting Bear, they were set on taking him home and have a story and photos to share:

"I just sent in a DNA test for Bear today, so we’ll see what breed he is sometime soon!
He’s been super sweet and very into affection recently! He’s opened up so much since we first met him! He actually demands to be pet now! He even cuddles sometimes.
He’s also super vocal now too! He barks all the time whenever he wants something! He’s so loud and happy now!
We’ve been taking him out on walks and out to the dog park already. He absolutely loves the dog park and meeting other dogs! He loves being chased and chasing his dog friends.
He’s also been super good about training! He’s already learned all of the basics. We’re working on on-leash and off-leash training at the moment, but he’s such a fast learner! He’s already learned sit, lay down, leave it, stay, and high five! Super smart!
He’s super curious all the time. I’m glad I was able to give him a good home!"

Bear, your rescue was one of a handful of rescue missions that truly stand out to me in my animal rescue career, and I won't soon forget it!
From your dumping ordeal, to surviving the night out here in coyote country, to the fact that you stuck around because your Pom friend lay deceased, you have been through enough to last many lifetimes over.
Looking at the photos and videos of you living your new life, I am pleased to see that you have put all that behind you and have opened yourself to new beginnings! You have a new family, that we know and trust, and a new doggie brother! I hope the rest of your life is everything you dreamed of, and then some.
Keep that glint in your beautiful eyes and never look back, Bear

Carmelo has officially been adopted!

Carmelo was dumped, with four other Pomeranians, a block away from us in late March of this year. Four were recovered over a two-day search and one was confirmed deceased on a neighboring property.

You may have noticed that Carmelo was never listed for adoption nor did he have his photo debut until now. This was intentional as our neighbor, who assisted us in wrangling the dumped pups, did a foster-to-adopt with Carmelo!

During Carmelo's foster-to-adopt, our neighbor (and owner of the amazing FURology Pet SPaw Inc.) shared photos of their adventures. She got him and his Pom buddies complimentary grooming sessions during this group effort to save the Poms!
We knew it wouldn't be long before she fell head over heels for this little goober, and he was adopted by her not long after🥰

Carmelo, you are such a special little dude who has been through quite the ordeal here in coyote country. Being deaf definitely wasn't in your favor when being dumped, but I am so glad you stuck with your group so an easy capture could be made.
It is so interesting to watch the way you processed the world around you. I could practically see your thought process as you went from being in the zone, to being silly, to back on the thought train again, to mindlessly poking at some random object while in your own little world😆
Having a neighbor adopt is a very different experience as we get to see you take off with your mom to work as well as live your life in your new home!
Normally this is the part where I say my goodbyes and wish you well. While I do wish you and your family all the best, how about a "We'll see you around" instead! Keep rockin' on, little dude

Another Pomeranian running loose in our neigborhood 😱
A kind gentleman scooped this little puffball up after nearly running this pup over. Thankfully he captured the pup, kept them safe, and drove them to us.
We are on our way to San Diego County Animal Services so the pup can complete their legal stray hold. If an owner is not found, and this is indeed another dumped Pomeranian, we will be transferring them to our rescue next week.

Stay tuned 🐾

Male, 2 years old

Meet Prince! This regal boy (along with his Pomeranian pals) was rescued by our team and our neighbors after being dumped a block away from our facility. He was taken to San Diego County Animal Services to undergo his legal stray hold prior to being transferred back into our care.
Prince is an outgoing boy who loves to be the center of attention and affection! He is happy being held and will calmly enjoy the ride and is energetic, and on the go, when you set him down!
Prince will do best in a home that can give him loads of attention, affection, and exercise to keep this royal boy happy!

Check out Prince and the Pomeranian's rescue story here:
https://www.facebook.com/heartofgoldsshelter/posts/815912043899272

Additional behavioral considerations: ESCAPE ARTIST.
Prince is a little survivor and almost evaded capture (when he was originally dumped and running at large) by climbing a fence and squeezing his way through it.
As an escape artist, Prince easily leaps over our 3.5ft. pony wall where we store supplies. Additionally, he can expertly climb x-pens, chain-link fencing, and any type of fencing that provides ample opportunity to climb or leap across. Escape proofing a home will be a must. He is always excited for any opportunity to dash or climb away as he believes the grass is greener on the other side.

Meet Oreo! This cute little fluffball (along with his Pomeranian pals) was rescued by our team and our neighbors after being dumped a block away from our facility. He was taken to San Diego County Animal Services to undergo his legal stray hold prior to being transferred back into our care.
Oreo is as outgoing as most pups are, with plenty of energy! While he does have his energetic puppy moments, he is also very laidback for a puppy and will gladly focus on playing with a toy/chew or enjoy relaxing with his friends!

Important Health Info: Oreo has cryptorchidism, meaning one of his testicles did not descend and is somewhere in his abdomen. He is scheduled for an ultrasound to locate the undescended testicle on May 3rd and will be having surgery to remove it a short time after.
Any complications will be listed here, otherwise his health note will be removed once this is resolved.

Bear had his matted fur shaved off as it was beyond repair. His awesome black merle pattern really shines through now that he has a chance to regrow a healthy coat again!

Bizarre Bazaar's Launch Party was a blast!

It was amazing to see our dearly departed Baby Girl on their newest creative vending machine. What an honor!
In addition, we received a $100 donation from Bizarre Bazaar's creators, Kate & Tim!

Our Baby Girl meant the world to us. Seeing her immortalized warms the soul 🥰

Our Story

Heart of Gold’s Shelter was established in April 2018 with the purpose of transferring dogs of all breeds, from our rescue partners at the San Diego Humane Society and the Chula Vista Animal Care Facility, while providing safe housing & individualized care where we cater to their respective temperaments.

Gertrude “Sissy” McGill, benefactress of the Heart of Gold Legacy Foundation, has given financial contributions to organizations that provide shelter and care to animals before the inception of the Foundation and Rescue. With the help of Teresita Bacani, a long-time friend and business partner, and Jessica Garcia, Operations Manager for the Rescue, Sissy’s vision of helping the animals through the Foundation and the Rescue came into fruition. A legacy has been fulfilled. To this date, many animal welfare organizations in the United States have benefited from the goodness of the heart of the Foundation.

With the acquisition of the dog resort property, we are able to accomplish this unique care for shelter dogs by providing them with over 9,000 square feet of space, sectioned accordingly to provide stimulation and socialization. We are not only looking for the best fit for the prospective adopter, but our rescues as well. Our Rescue’s personalized, hands-on approach is making a difference in the lives of dogs in their search of a loving, forever home.
