Impulse Control
Nova is a working Border Collie and she competes in herding. It’s what she was bred for and it’s what she loves. Because she is trained and has impulse control she will not go after the old sheep or sheep that other dogs are working right near her. In fact self-regulation is what makes self-control possible. There is a big difference between self-regulation and self-control. Self-control is about resisting strong impulses while self-regulation is about reducing the frequency of those impulses by managing stress and recovery. Just like us, a dog’s ability to self-regulate is developmental- they aren’t born knowing how to manage their responses. The ability is shaped by factors like training, hormones and the environment. Invest in teaching impulse control and building frustration tolerance.

Since the weather has been so cold I am training the girls to walk on the treadmill for fun. They can also use it in the summer when it’s too hot. It’s a fun game for them to learn and helps with balance too. We’ll slowly increase the speed little by little.

Hunter
Little Hunter is doing and amazing job with his training because he has an amazing owner! Look how confidently he handles the dogwalk!
This is not agility training. The agility obstacles are used as enrichment and to increase confidence.
Training
My star students this week are Nyusha and her guardian! Here they demonstrate an excellent example of luring at your left side to teach loose leash walking and an automatic sit. I wish all my students took video of their practice sessions. Absolutely amazing!
Cherish every moment. Dogs are a blessing.
