It's critical to identify the underlying cause. Start by ruling out any medical issues by having your cat examined by the veterinarian. Look at the litter box set-up to make sure it truly meets your cat's needs in terms of cleanliness, size, type, litter, location, and number of boxes. Look at the household environment as well. Is there multicat tension? Changes in the household? Stressful environment? Remember, there's always a reason for the behavior that makes sense to the cat.
