Patient Spotlight:

Poor Brock seems to be out of the woods after his debaucal with a cat toy!

GI obstruction secondary to dietary indiscretion (eating a non-food item) is one of the more common things that we will see with young dogs and cats. Best case scenario, they pass the foreign body. Worst case scenario, the foreign body causes a blockage that requires surgical intervention.

Keep an eye on your puppies and kittens when they are playing with toys. Vomiting, diarrhea, and lethargy are all symptoms that warrant a physical exam!

Brock's owners were very attentive and we are thankful that Brock seems to be on the way to a full recovery!

My dearest clients,

Next month marks two milestone anniversaries… 49 years for South Carroll Veterinary Hospital and 25 years of my service to the Eldersburg community. In July of 1999, my father welcomed me to the practice with open arms and instilled in me not only the importance of practicing good medicine, but just as importantly treating our patients and their humans like family.

I write this letter to you as I am about to embark on a new chapter in my life. I’ve had 25 amazing years of providing care to your beloved fur babies and I thank each and every one of you, from the bottom of my heart, for your trust and loyalty. I’ve loved each of my patients as if they were my own, and I will miss them, and their humans, deeply.

As you all know, I am a huge advocate for oral health which is why you will not be surprised to hear that I will be starting a three-year veterinary dental residency in July. While I realize that this career enhancement may come as a shock to many of you, rest assured that I will be leaving you in the best of (private, non-corporate) hands. The legacy of South Carroll Veterinary Hospital, started by my father fifty years ago, will continue on as a family you can trust because it’s staying in the family!

Allow me to introduce Dr. April Stephens and Dr. Stella Carroll, your extended family. Some of you may remember Dr. Stephens from her younger years when she interned and worked with us while in high school, college, and veterinary school. Fast forward twelve years, Dr. Stephens is ready to carry on the legacy. She brings with her a colleague and good friend, Dr. Stella Carroll. With their combined 20 years of experience, both will be here to ensure the health and well being of your fur babies. As a two-doctor practice, they will be able to expand the practice in a way that one doctor could not - you will be very excited about this. They are beyond excited to meet and work with each and every one of you. Please welcome them and know that, like me, they want to do my father and the community proud.

-Dr. Karen

Meet the doctor

Dr. Stephens is very excited to help you and your pets! She graduated from Towson University in 2008 and Maryland-Regional College of Veterinary Medicine (Virginia Tech) in 2012. She is an Eldersburg native and her start in veterinary medicine began here at South Carroll Veterinary Hospital in 2004 as an assistant. She is passionate about internal medicine and hospice/end of life care. She has a husband, son, daughter, flock of laying hens, 2 Cavalier King Charles Spaniels (Johann Sebastian Pup and Pisachio Cornbread), and 2 Nigerian Dwarf goats (Nibbles and Noms). When she is not taking care of your pets or her family, you may find her gardening, cooking, or painting.

Meet the doctor

Dr. Carroll loves caring for her patients and building relationships with their families. She completed her undergraduate studies in viticulture, enology, and plant science at Cornell University in 2012 and graduated from the University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine in 2016. Dr. Carroll grew up in Boring Maryland. She, her husband, and their four sons raise beef cattle on their farm in Boring. They have a few chickens and a 150 pound Newfoundland named Elvis. Dr. Carroll is passionate about surgery. When she is not practicing veterinary medicine, you will find her fishing with her boys, gardening, or preserving her garden harvest.

---10-Jan UPDATE---

Unfortunately, due to ongoing medical issues and staffing, we will remained closed this week and re-open Monday January 15th.
---End---

---8-Jan---

Well, Dr. Karen has broken her streak...

Since her veterinary licensing in 1999, she has never taken a sick day. Isn't that amazing?! 25 years without a sick day!

Unfortunately, she has tested positive for COVID, as have other staff members, so we are forced to close the hospital for today and tomorrow. She is on the mend, so we are waiting for the 5-day window to pass before she returns to work.

Accordingly, we will be closed today and tomorrow (Mon-Tue, 8-9 Jan) and reopen on Wed 10-Jan. [We will be short on staff for Wed and Thu, so please be patient as we catch back up.]

If you have a pet emergency during this time, please call

PetER in Columbia (24/7) at (410) 441-3304
or
Central Carroll Animal Emergency at (410) 871-2000

Thanks and we'll see you on the healthy side...

Trust Your Family With Ours

For over 45 years, South Carroll Veterinary Hospital has been serving the Carroll County region with complete animal care. Our founder, Dr. Ronald L. Schueler, began the practice from his Eldersburg home, accessible around the clock for all pet emergencies. Through hard work and devotion, the hospital has now grown over the years into the current state-of-the-art facility located on Georgetown Blvd.

Dr. Schueler's daughter, Dr. Karen Schueler-Dennis, joined the hospital in 1999, and now continues the family tradition of personalized care into this millennium. Her training, both nationally and abroad, brings an enhanced skill set and knowledge to treat your pet comprehensively and compassionately.
