How to tell if your pet's fish oil is rancid!šŸ¤¢

There is a good chance the fish oilšŸŸ you are buying for your pet is oxidized, meaning, exposure to light, heat or oxygen has begun to degrade the quality of the oil. Over time, this produces rancidity which can cause damage to your petā€™s body at a cellular level.šŸ¦ ā˜ ļø

Here are some important tips to make sure the fish oil you are feeding your pet is helping and not harming:

šŸ‘ƒSmell - a strong fish or rotten smell is a sign of spoiling
šŸ‘…Taste - cut open a capsule and taste the oil. Fish oil should have a ā€˜fresh fishā€™ or mild taste. If your oil tingles or tastes pungent or sour, it is a sign of oxidation.
šŸ§“ Look for oil that is packaged in a dark glass bottle
ā„ļø Store liquid and capsules in the refrigerator and use within one month.

šŸ‘‰ If you want to learn more about the importance of fish oil and omega-3 fatty acids, this week is another episode of the Inside Scoop U nutrition class where we will be diving into our next macronutrient - fats! Including the problem with fish oils and the different fats needed for different meats.šŸ„šŸ“

Once a month in the Inside Scoop, expert pet food formulator Steve Brown and Dr. Susan Recker take a deep dive into the basics of pet food nutrition. Youā€™ll learn the rationale for their approach to diet formulation, how to evaluate pet food labels and recipes, and even how to formulate a basic recipe for a healthy adult dog šŸ¶and catšŸ±!

Animals are our allies, friends and companions. Each has his or her own mission, or purpose (maybe more than one, since it seems they are all here to teach us about love).

Some are high beings and master teachers--just like there are certain such humans in our lives.

I wanted to share a little bit about a recent session for one of those dogs on a spiritual mission....she was using a self destructive habit mainly to get their attention....she was absolutely clear that the energy healing I was going to do for her, needed to also include her humans. This was a first for me...having the animal insist on including the humans in the animal's own session. Wow, such love and compassion from this white furry being!

Her deepest desire was for her human family to listen to their intuition more--for themselves and so that they can hear her better.

Isn't that beautiful? If your animal could give you a spiritual or healing message, what would it be?

An intriguing thing comes up often, when someone calls me to help with their animal. That is, the dynamics, patterns and interrelationship between the animal and its humans, and how animals are so often mirroring things to us...or here to help us heal old abandonment scars, or myriad other experiences from the past...They definitely teach us and inspire us to open our hearts more...sometimes to ourselves as much as to them.

And, some animals, like some humans, are more evolved and have different soul missions. Doesn't make them (or us) 'better' than others, we are all here operating at different frequencies and with different purposes and lessons.

I would LOVE to hear shares, stories, questions about this aspect of your relationship to animals. Feel free to post here, or send me a private message...I will be happy to respond to questions, and if appropriate, post something here that everyone can benefit from (with permission and without specific identifying references).

Something to consider, and not to underestimate, is the impact of what our animals witness. Watching someone else be abused or traumatized creates what is called secondary trauma (for humans or animals). Many animals, especially dogs, have an instinctual or in**ed drive for service and protection, and many also have soul contracts to be here for humans.

So if an animal witnesses abuse to another animal or to a human and is unable to protect, to act, it can be carrying its sorrow or helplessness as a burden.

If you know that has happened, or suspect it has, you can speak directly to the animal...you can ask it, you can reassure him or her that that time is over, and they don't need to keep carrying it.

It works!

Strong messages from ants this morning...of respect! My interspecies awareness has been mainly focused on dogs, cats, birds......but all of them, winged and podded and slithering ones, have their own broadcasts.....

All of our relationships with animals are invitations to slow down and listen. They are master teachers!

I'm feeling especially aware and grateful of that this morning, having just communicated with a grieving white German shepherd.
Dear one, you have just been my teacher, as well as a teacher and messenger to your human family.

When an animal causes harm or hurts us (inadvertently), or when s/he witnesses the pain of others they can't help, they feel sadness, or grief. Sometimes--especially the sensitive ones--they will continue to carry the grief or pain of the memory in their bodies...till someone tells them, "It's okay, you don't have to carry this for me."

Also many many dogs want to be of service.....but if they are not allowed to, unable to, or feel like they are creating a problem....or just in some way prevented from being of service...it has an impact. They too have a soul purpose on the planet and some of them are more aware of it than others!

Tell your dogs thanks when they help you, protect you, show compassion, light up your day with some tail wagging...or even when they try to and it doesn't work out.

It is SO much like having another human in the house. Let me just say this: if you treat your dogs more like a human, assuming there are generally motivations for everything they do, even if you don't understand the logic (they may not, either, they are instinctual creatures). that may take the relationship far deeper than you ever imagined it could go.

Let me know how it goes!

"THE WAY ANIMALS TALK IS THROUGH THEIR BEHAVIOUR
A lot of issues come up between animals and their owners because
humans misinterpret the language the animals are speaking: they ā€˜talkā€™ to
us through their actions - their behaviour. It is vital that we learn to
understand what their behaviour tells us. However, people often try to
change the unwanted behaviour (or even ask me to do it), rather than
realise that the animals are communicating something important. The
animal is not just being ā€˜stupidā€™ or ā€˜stubbornā€™.
- ā€˜Aggressiveā€™ behaviour may actually be caused by fear or insecurity. I
have never come across a truly mean animal.
- An animal that cannot do without you may be experiencing
separation anxiety. A happy, confident animal that lives a good life is
okay with you leaving it for a while as it trust that you will come
back.
- Behaviour that is interpreted as being ā€˜stubbornā€™ is just caused by
misunderstanding ā€“ you are assuming that the animal knows what you
want. But often we do not realise that we are sending ā€˜mixedā€™ signals: I
want the horse to go in the trailer, but Iā€™m nervous that he might
break the thing down, just like the last timeā€¦ ā€¦ I tell my dog that he is
good, but I actually get nervous when we encounter big dogs on our
walk and thatā€™s when my dog starts barkingā€¦
Most people act with good intentions but can, nevertheless, be going
against the natural, instinctive needs of their animal. The following story
illustrates this perfectly.
A lady asked me if I could give her horse some calming essences because
he would always try to kick and bite when they shaved him in the winter.
They shaved him so that he would not ā€˜sweat so muchā€™. When I
connected with the horse, he was really distressed. He was trying to say,
ā€˜Leave me and my haircoat alone, I donā€™t want to be shaved, it feels
awful and the blanket is annoyingā€™. Not surprisingly, this lady did not go
home with essences, but with some educational material on how the
horseā€™s haircoat works and what you are doing when you remove the hair
and replace it with a blanket. The horse, through its behaviour, was
communicating its distress. It did not need treating for bad behaviour ā€“ it
needed listening to. How else could it show its needs?"

Note: This is in quotes because it is not my original writing, it's the writing of another communicator. Unfortunately I lost the citation, so if the author happens to see this, would you please message me so I can give you credit?

Hello animal loving friends. How are things going with you and your furry companions these days?

Something we may not always be thinking about, is that our animals are also going through all these planetary energy shifts, too....so, living with us, as we all go through the intensity of solar flares, the rapid rise in the earth's frequency (Schumann resonance), astrological events....they are also feeling, sometimes taking on and even magnifying or mirroring our emotional state...

One simple way we can support them, and ourselves too, is with flower essences. Many people know about the Bach flower essence called Rescue Remedy (especially for shock, trauma, intense upsets, a kind of emotional emergency essence) but flower essences are a whole healing realm, with many different essences, many different companies making essences.

They are simple to administer--a few drops in water, or in a spray bottle, and completely natural, they are a form of energy medicine. I'll share more about essences in other posts, soon. If you are curious, one company's essences I often recommend are the Alaskan essences. They offer a wide range of essences, including some specifically for animals.

Other flower essence companies I like a lot: Flower Essence Society of California (fesflowers.org) and Spirit-in-Nature essences, some of which are also animal specific.

I often recommend essences in conjunction with the sessions I do for animals. I also offer a flower essence consultation as a stand alone service, and can create a custom flower essence blend. You can go to the site(s) yourself and order directly, too.

Questions? Comments? Sharing about your experiences of essences...all welcome here or message me directly at [email protected].

Here's a great page from the Alaskan essence site related to essences for animals:

Flower essences are helpful for all kinds of animals, including dogs, cats and horses. Animals donā€™t wonder what essences are, or whether they work, but they respond to essences very quickly. Flower essences work with the animals at a deep level to alleviate suffering, remove layers of trauma and ...

It's great that professional animal communication exists and I enjoy my work. It's an honor to be asked to communicate with them and I am touched by how open and grateful the animals usually are, to finally get heard!

Yet the truth is that everyone can be--and already is-- an animal communicator. Most people don't realize how much more fully you can communicate with animals. You can speak out loud, you can communicate telepathically with words and images....I invite you to experiment and see how much richer the conversation can be.

It's two sided--one is you speaking or sending messages or broadcasting. The other side of the conversation is listening. It works so much better as you learn to be receptive, quiet your mind, listen and begin to trust more and more what you hear and receive from the animal.

Why do I say you are already a communicator? If you've ever called an animal by name, or given it a command--you're a communicator. You've seen how an animal responds to its name, to your tone of voice and commands. You can fine tune your observation skills by paying attention to nonverbal cues (position of ears and tail, body posture, facial expression) which tell you more about what your animal is feeling.

Try taking the conversation further. You really can talk to them out loud like talking to another human, or talk to them in your mind.

If the animal seems to be upset, ask him or her to tell you or show you what's wrong, or what they need. Then, be quiet and listen. You can confirm what you hear back with them too.

Try communicating at other times too, not only if they seem to have a problem. Build a better relationship by checking in with them---at any time, "What do you need?" "What's going on?" "What would make you happier or more comfortable".

Part of the process of improving communication is learning to accept and trust what you hear back. Let's say you ask or open up a conversation, and feel like you received an answer. You can go ahead and ask, if you're not sure it's accurate. Speak out loud or think in your mind, something like this:

"What I think you're saying is __________, can you show me if that's right?" Then listen again. The confirmation from the animal could be a feeling of rightness, body language, a movement or gesture, or it could come in words that you hear in your mind. Sometimes it's just an inner knowing that you will have.

This kind of conversation always works better when you are not in a crisis or highly charged situation. Just like relating to another person, communication flows more smoothly when you're in a receptive calm place and not feeling reactive. Choose a good time to have the communication, not when either of you are stressed, anxious or short on time.

When you're stressed or upset, it's harder to hear your own intuition as well as the telepathic communication of the animal. What can also make communication more difficult at a time like this is that your animal is likely picking up, perhaps magnifying, and reflecting back what's going on with you. It's just how any close relationship works--it is a mirror.

If you're going through a challenging time, seek some support for yourself or try some additional self-care. Just like a mom does a better job with her children when she has a self care practice, you'll have a more peaceful happy relationship with your animals when you take care of yourself and seek support from others when you need it. It's a win-win!

This is why in my animal communication and behavioral healing work I often am working as much with the human as their companion animal. Usually they both need some repatterning.

For anyone, but especially for you if you're single and living alone-- your relationship with your animal may become the primary or one of your most significant relationships. So they are important and can get pretty emotionally laden.

ALL our relationships, with humans and with animals, are in our lives to teach us. They teach us many things, about how to listen and be present, about the need to take care of ourselves better so we can be there for others in a healthy balanced way.

So, do reach out for help with the larger issues around your animal....and also if you are having a problem relating with them. Part of improving the relationship--for your own benefit as well a the animal's--is supporting your nervous system to calm down. There are lots of ways to do this.

Any kind of breathing, movement or yoga practice that helps you relax and calm down is great. Other things that can help are meditation, walking on the earth and grounding, simple energy psychology techniques (such as tapping or Emotional Freedom Technique) that you can learn to do on yourself. Essential oils and aromatherapy can shift your mood. There's also flower essences (a whole other system of natural healing that is very different than essential oils even though both are a form of plant medicine). I teach Qigong and other kinds of healing movement. Dancing can be a great stress release! I am happy to guide you in choosing which is best for you and can also teach you some of these things.

Explore what works, reach out for extra support. Wishing you clear calm communication with yourself, your animal and all of life!

If you are reading this page, I know this story is NOT yours...but it felt important to share.....

This is the side of rescuing that people donā€™t see, and just donā€™t realise how hard it is for us behind the scenes.
Strap in guys, while I explain.

This is Marcus.

His owner contacted me to ask me to rehome him, becauseā€¦.
ā€˜He barks at other dogs and people when out so needs rehoming ā€™

Marcus is a 2 year old patterdale x Labrador.

He had been owned by said owner forā€¦ 5 weeks.

Heā€™s just settling in, learning his new environment and family, and at only 2 years old he will be rather overwhelmed as well as adjusting to everything new.

Barking is how dogs communicate, and express their fears, and also excitement.

When I asked his owner what training she had been doing with Marcus to help him overcome his possible nervous behaviour, the answer was ā€˜heā€™s had noneā€™

I explained I am full at the moment but I will let her know when I had room to fit him in.

2.5 hours later I receive a call from a vet practice.

Marcus had been taken to the vets to be EUTHANISED.

Put to sleep.
To end his life, because his owner could not be bothered to put any time or training into him.

THANKFULLY, the vets refused and called us.
They spoke to their behaviourist while they were there, and offered the owner sessions to help Marcus- the owner declined.

Killing him was the easy way to end her problem.

So, of course, with fear the owner would then just go to another vet and put him to sleep- I made room.
I donā€™t have room, but Iā€™m not having it.

Marcus has been with us less than half an hour.
He has sat, taken a treat very gently.
Has met 6 dogs- enjoyed a sniff and his tail hasnā€™t stopped wagging

He hasnā€™t barked yet.

Too many people are getting pets without any consideration to the time they need to adjust, and expecting them to be ā€˜perfect companionsā€™ without actually putting anything into them.

Take some responsibility and invest the time into them, you chose them to be part of your family. Stop destroying them just because you cannot be bothered to help them.
Itā€™s not their fault.

You are safe Marcus, and loved.
You will never be treated so badly again, and that I can promise.

Anxious dog, anyone? You may enjoy this excerpt of a great article by Dr. Karen A Becker. Link to the full article will be found in the first comment. My guess is she is not aware of the specific work I (and others )do using the techniques of Resonance Repatterning (r) with animals, but interestingly she does use the word repatterning at the end.

One of my earliest and most moving successes was with two rescued greyhounds who were terrified of thunder...and of course there are many reasons and sources for canine anxiety. The article begins:

"A newly published study by researchers at the University of Ghent in Belgium suggests that dogs with anxiety have ā€œdifferent brains.ā€ Specifically, they appear to have abnormalities in functional neural networks.

Brains of Anxious Dogs Have Different Wiring
Research into anxiety in animals is considered an important tool for studying anxiety disorders, producing results that can benefit both veterinary and human medicine.....

The University of Ghent study results, published on March 17, 2023, in the journal PLoS One, show that compared with healthy (non-anxious) dogs, dogs with anxiety demonstrate stronger connections between the amygdala (a major processing center for emotions that also links emotions to many other brain abilities, especially memories, learning, and the senses) and other regions of the anxiety network.

The study involved 25 healthy dogs belonging to the university, and 13 anxious family dogs who were volunteered by their owners...
They observed that while at rest, the anxious dogs had stronger connections between the amygdala and other parts of the anxiety circuit, especially the hippocampus (a region of the brain associated primarily with memory). The brains of dogs who showed fear and anxiety towards strangers, as well as excitability, were more likely to show abnormal network metrics in the amygdala.

Dysfunction in Certain Brain Regions May Lead to Anxiety
Previous research has established an association between the amygdala and hippocampus with dogsā€™ memories and emotional states such as arousal, excitement, and fear.

ā€œDysfunctions of these regions can lead to anxiety symptoms like more fear, less excitability, less trainability, and so on, which are in line with previous human research,ā€ the study authors noted. ā€œA particular highlight of our results is the connection between the hippocampus and mesencephalon [midbrain].
..It should be noted that the study was limited by the small sample of anxious dogs, most of whom were adopted from animal shelters with life experiences that may have included abuse and/or neglect. Mistreatment can influence the brainā€™s anxiety networks. In addition, dogs born and raised in a lab like the 25 non-anxious study dogs, differ from dogs raised in family homes."

Again my note: Any dog can have emotional issues or a history of abuse and neglect, but my animal practice has been 90% rescues--they generally have been through a lot more and need more support. The article continues....

"8 Common Canine Stress Triggers
Many dogs today are prone to anxiety, and research suggests that the stress of living with a fear or anxiety disorder can negatively affect dogsā€™ health and even how long they live.

When a dog feels anxious, his body releases an excessive amount of norepinephrine, the fight or flight hormone, which can alter gut bacteria and interfere with gastrointestinal (GI) tract motility. This flood of norepinephrine can result in physical symptoms like diarrhea, and when a housetrained dog has an accident indoors, it only intensifies his stress.

Some dogs experience short episodes of stress, while others suffer chronic stress. Even if your dogā€™s brain is wired differently than the brains of his more relaxed counterparts, the more you know about what triggers his anxiety, the behaviors he tends to perform when heā€™s anxious, and the effect of stress on his health, the better able youā€™ll be to identify the signs and take action to minimize or eliminate stressors.

Itā€™s also important to recognize that while from your very human viewpoint, the environment you provide for your dog is stress-free, dog stressors can be quite different from human stressors.

Some of the causes of stress in dogs are species-specific, while others are triggers that can cause anxiety in humans as well. And just like sensitive people, sensitive dogs tend to be more susceptible to stress.

Some common triggers include:

Sudden loud noises (e.g., fireworks, thunderstorms)
Punishment-based training methods involving yelling, hitting, shock collars, etc.
Adverse relationships with other pets or humans in the household
Unwanted attention such as being randomly awakened from a nap, or being forcibly hugged, kissed, or held
Lack of opportunities to express normal species- and breed-specific behaviors such as sniffaris, running, retrieving, hunting, herding, etc.
Exposure to the strange and unfamiliar (objects, animals, people, etc.)
Changes in housing, household routine, or household members
Separation from family members, including other pets

As you attempt to identify the triggers for your dogā€™s anxiety, also consider her history. If you adopted her as an adult, what do you know about her past? Was she abused or neglected? Is she anxious mainly around men or kids? Other dogs?

How to Minimize Your Dogā€™s Anxiety
Some of the things that cause anxiety in dogs can be unavoidable, such as thunderstorms or a move to a new home. However, there are several things you can control to minimize stress and improve your dogā€™s quality of life. Examples:

Use only relationship-centered, fear-free behavior training/trainers, and intervene as soon as possible.
Help everyone in the family understand and respect your dog's need for uninterrupted sleep and human handling he feels comfortable with.
Increase your dogā€™s daily physical activity level, since the vast majority of dogs, especially large breeds, donā€™t get nearly enough. Daily movement is extremely important in mitigating your dogā€™s stress response.
Dogs left alone for several hours during the day get lonely and bored. If there's often no one home to keep your dog company, recruit a friend or neighbor or hire a dog walker to take him for a stroll around the block, at a minimum. An alternative is doggy daycare.
Engage in brain games, sniff-centered walks, or nose work on a daily basis. Most dogs are mentally under-stimulated. Giving dogs fun jobs, tasks and mental exercises that engage their senses promotes healthier brain chemistry and more balanced behavior.

While you work to get to the root of the anxiety and positively repattern behaviors, there are many natural options to help calm your dogā€™s nerves. Playing music, especially classical music, is one simple strategy.

However, one of the most important steps is to make sure your dog is getting lots of exercise ā€” both mental and physical ā€” daily. I have found a dogā€™s anxiety is inversely proportional to the amount of exercise they get.

If anxiety occurs when your dog will be home alone, leave him with an article of clothing or blanket that has your scent on it. Schedule dog walkers and check out doggy daycares. Look at remote treat-release toys or a lick mat to help him pass the time. I also recommend consulting an integrative veterinarian about stress-lowering herbal and nutraceutical protocols.

If your dogā€™s anxiety appears to be getting worse instead of better, enlist the help of a force-free behaviorist or trainer, veterinary behaviorist and consider looking into applied zoopharmacognosy."

Or, my note, get ahold of someone who offers Animal Communication, Behavioral Repatterning, and Flower Essences (such as myself :-) )
