It’s Thanksgiving and most equine veterinarians will be spending much needed and much deserved time with their family. Some, including myself, will be out of town visiting family.

Horse owners need to be proactive during times like this and do all they can to avoid emergency calls. For instance:

Don’t deworm.
Don’t change feeds, amounts, or ANYTHING regarding their feed.
If you have a horse prone to choke don’t forget to soak its feed.
Don’t switch to new hay.
Don’t change schedules with ANYTHING (feeding, turnout, etc).
Check on your horses at a decent time of the day.
Don’t forget to keep fresh water full (use a heater if it is cold).
Keep a salt block available to all horses.
If there is anything your horse could cut itself on in your pasture GET IT OUT.
Have a thermometer handy and know how to safely use it.
Check your gates to make sure they are properly secured.
Have access to a trailer to haul into a facility.
Don’t get on that rank horse that is going to hurt itself or you to prove to your cousins you are a cowboy.
Don’t start halter breaking.
If you need medications or to speak with someone at your vet’s office, don’t wait until Thursday or Friday to call.
If it’s not an emergency do not blow up your veterinarian’s phone!

An ounce of prevention is worth 100 pounds of cure with horses. Enjoy your Thanksgiving!

Great advice!

Great advice!

Water remains as important for your horse in cold weather as it is in the summer. As a matter of fact, decreased water consumption in the winter is thought to be the primary inducing factor for impaction colic — although there are other predisposing factors such as poor hay quality, lack of exercise, internal parasites and dental problems.

Impaction colic is essentially constipation and most often includes the accumulation of hard, dry f***l material in the colon. The usual signs of impending impaction colic are depression, a decreased appetite, and decreased production and dryness of manure.

Studies demonstrate that you can increase your horse's winter water consumption if you provide access to heated water, but ONLY if that is the only source of water available. As always, if you have any questions about preventing colic in your horse, your equine veterinarian remains your best source of information!

🐴 Important Notice for Yellowstone Fans and Horse Owners! 🐴

During the recent episode of Yellowstone on November 17, 2024, there was a mistake regarding the administration of Banamine to a horse. Banamine (Flunixin Meglumine) should only be given orally or intravenously to horses, never intramuscularly.

Why is this a big deal? Injecting Banamine into the muscle can cause muscle damage and potentially lead to a serious condition called clostridial myositis. This can be life-threatening for the horse and requires immediate veterinary attention if it occurs.

For more information on why Banamine should never be injected into the muscle, check out our informative YouTube video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dtPT1dLauwQ

Remember, when it comes to your horse's health, always consult your equine veterinarian if you have any doubts about administering medication. Your horse's well-being is our top priority! 🐎

Happy Halloween from a Scooby inspired Beasley team!!

In the serene countryside of Eldorado, Beasley Equine Clinic faced an unusual predicament when Dr. Travis discovered that his precious Nespresso pods were mysteriously disappearing every morning. Determined to unravel the mystery, Dr. Travis enlisted the help of his inquisitive team - Jon, Autumn, and Hannah, along with their loyal canine companion, Lenny. Suspicions fell on the mischievous farriers Max and Steve, who had been causing trouble in the town with their unruly behavior.

Embracing a Scooby-Doo-esque approach, the Beasley Equine team set out on a covert investigation to catch the coffee-loving culprits in the act. Through a series of clever traps and sleuthing, they uncovered Max and Steve sneaking into the clinic before dawn to pilfer Dr. Travis' Nespresso pods for their own enjoyment. With a blend of wit and teamwork, the Beasley Equine crew exposed the farriers' caffeine-fueled caper, putting an end to the Nespresso theft and restoring harmony to the Clinic once more.
