Continuing our theme of safe interactions during , here are some excellent tips on how to meet a new dog and approach a new dog. These are VERY important to teach children early on in life, so that they behave appropriately around dogs. Children are most likely to be bitten, so a little education at home about proper animal handling can safe lives and injuries in the future. Let's all be safe around dogs, whether we know them or not.

During , please remember that any dog can bite. Even your sweet housemate could bite if scared, surprised, or sick. It is very important to be aware of times when your dog may react differently. Let's be safe!

It's National Dog Bite Prevention Week! What is most important to note is any dog can bite: big or small, male or female, young or old. Even the cuddliest, fuzziest, sweetest pet can bite if provoked, so it's important to know how to avoid escalating risky situations and to understand when you should and should not interact with dogs.

Here are a few scenarios when you should avoid petting a dog. You can find more helpful tips at avma.org/DogBite.

10 years?!?!?! How is that possible?? Please help us congratulate Jessica on 10 years here at Scott County Animal Hospital. From her first days here as a veterinary assistant to now being a very experienced and fully-credentialed veterinary technician, Jessica is a valued member of our team that we can always depend on. She is the queen of Dad jokes, always willing to help her team with any task, and a committed volunteer for animal rescue and pet adoption organizations. She's also usually the person behind the camera, so we had to work hard to find photos of her. Thanks, Jessica, for all your hard work and for keeping this place fun and lively, even on the bad days. ❤️❤️

Sometimes life throws you a surprise.....

Beau is a 3-year-old Labrador Retriever that presented to SCAH for a history of intermittent vomiting and diarrhea for several days. During the exam Dr. Jewell noted that Beau's abdomen seemed painful. Xrays were taken of Beau's abdomen, which showed a large amount of material in his stomach. To determine if the material in the stomach was a large amount of food or a foreign object, they decided to recheck his xrays the next morning to see if the material in his stomach had passed. At the recheck in the morning, the large amount of material remained in his stomach. Since all the suspicious material was still in the stomach, Dr. Jewell elected to induce vomiting to see if Beau could vomit any of the foreign material. If this attempt at vomiting was unsuccessful, he would need surgery to remove the material. To our surprise Beau vomited up two 12-inch-long stuffed toys! He was feeling MUCH better afterwards!

Beau was lucky that his mom took out pet insurance on him when he was younger. A case like this might have ended up with a much different outcome and over a thousand dollars invested in surgical removal. Dogs and cats are unpredictable and you never know when you will be faced with an emergency. Pet insurance can alleviate the burden of unexpected vet bills. We strongly encourage pet insurance for ALL pets. For more information on pet insurance please visit www.petinsurancereview.com.

It's National Puppy Day!! Please share some pics of your pups when they were babies. 🐕🐩

Today is National Puppy Day! An important reminder - especially if you recently adopted a puppy - is that socialization should be part of your training considerations.

Socialization is what allows pets to enjoy interactions and be comfortable around people and other animals. You can find more puppy (or kitten) socialization tips ➡️ https://bit.ly/2GwK58h

We had a great day yesterday with our Vet For A Day winner, Billy! This guy came prepared with a ton of questions and impressed us all. He is already involved in FFA and the agriculture programs at North Scott High, and has plans to become a large animal veterinarian. We hope he had a good day, and hope to see him again in the future. Thanks to the North Scott Chamber of Commerce auction for giving us the opportunity to encourage the next generation of veterinarians.

Dr. Emily recently attended continuing education at the Brookfield Zoo in Chicago. The topic was osteoarthritis, which plagues so many of our patients. Keys to effectively treating are prevention and diagnosing early!

Did you catch this story on the news yesterday? Very crazy! We have removed a lot of things from the stomach and intestines of dogs and cats, but never this much at once!!! Sure hope the owners have pet insurance in case she does it again.

A veterinarian at the Corona Animal Emergency Center found 44 items in the stomach of a 7-month-old Bernese Mountain Dog that required surgery on Monday evening.

What a lovely surprise we received yesterday from counsellor Tracy Denahy and the North Scott Schools - a huge box of cookies to thank us for years of care for the high school therapy dog Lincoln. As you may know, sweet Lincoln passed away suddenly after a short illness earlier this month. We were very proud to care for him for all these years, and we know he will be dearly missed by everyone at the high school and the entire North Scott community. 💔
