We had a fun day today - and we think Kayla did too. Kayla's mom purchased our Vet For A Day package at the North Scott Chamber of Commerce auction last year, and today was that day! We had Kayla helping in appointments, weighing dogs, making slides for ear cytologies, and gowning up for (pretend) surgery. She was a great help all day, and we think she had a lot of fun.

If your son or daughter is interested in joining us for a day like this, consider bidding on our package at the auction, which opens soon!

It's not all about the candy itself sometimes. We have had encounters with candy wrappers, lollipop sticks, candy rings, and many other foreign objects in cats and dogs. Keep your pets safe this Halloween by keeping candy far out of reach.

Most of our staff enjoyed a fun dinner at Johnny's Steakhouse last night, courtesy of our BI rep Payton. There was a little CE time, some good food, and some games with prizes. Thanks Payton!!!

Vet Technician spotlight #6 - Caitlyn

Caitlyn is a Muscatine Community College graduate who did her internship with us and never left! Some of you may have noticed that Caitlyn has been missing in action lately. She is off on maternity leave with her second child. We hope to have her back at work in December. Caitlyn is often a quiet one at work, but gets a lot of things done. She likes to help with dentistry and surgery, and manages many of our client callback texts on the computer. She is always a team player, helping her co-workers with any task no matter how busy she is.

Thank you Caitlyn! 😊

As we approach the end of Vet Tech Week, this post is a great reminder of how critically important veterinary technicians and assistants are to veterinary medicine. NEVER call someone JUST a vet tech - they are so incredibly important to our hospital, to us, and to your pet's care. They are highly trained professionals. Veterinary technicians are AMAZING!!!

JUST a Vet Tech greeted you at the door with a smiling face, even though we’ve been running around for 11 hours straight. Your pet was assessed by JUST a Vet Tech and, when we noticed he wasn’t stable, JUST a Vet Tech carried your 70 plus pound dog to the back and screamed for a doctor. Once the...

Vet assistant spotlight #5 - Andrés

Yes, there really is a non-female employee at our clinic! We thank him often for his patience in dealing with all the women around him. For those who don't know, Andrés is actually a veterinarian, trained in his home country of Bolivia, but when he came to the USA he decided not to go through the extra licensing to continue that career. Instead, he is our indispensable veterinary assistant working mostly in surgery. He is quite the jokester, and loves to play tricks on everyone at the clinic, as well as telling us stories about the crazy exotic diseases he saw in Bolivia.

Thank you Andrés!

Vet assistant spotlight #4 - Nikki

Some of you may recognize Nikki as our former groomer, but two years ago she switched to a veterinary assistant role here at the hospital. With her past experience, she is very good at handling all of our patients, and can offer some suggestions on home care of pet hair. She is now also well-versed in medical pet care, helping with all sorts of health exams and sick appointments here at the hospital, and is continuing to learn more things every day. She's a Jeep girl - you may see her in her purple Jeep around town. She also admits that her new little dog is completely spoiled after years of owning larger dogs.

Thank you Nikki! 😊

Vet technician spotlight #3 - Kayla

The newest member of our technical staff is Kayla - she is fresh out of Kirkwood College's veterinary technician program this past spring and came to work for us right away. You may recognize her, as she was kennel staff here for years before going to vet tech school. Kayla is already impressing us with her skills in every area - she is always organized, gets all the details in history from the clients, and is very helpful in surgery and anesthesia. She always has a smile on her face, and is always ready to help her co-workers with any task. We hope she will be part of our staff for many years to come.

Thank you Kayla! 😊

Vet technician spotlight #2 - Jessica

Jessica has worked here as a veterinary assistant for several years, but last year she completed her training and board exams to become a full-fledged veterinary technician. We can always rely on her to show up with the tunes boomin' in her car or on her phone. She keeps things silly at the clinic with a never-ending supply of one-liners and Dad jokes, but she's also very serious about pet care. She is up for anything, whether it's a fun surgery or a nail trim on a grumpy cat. She is also a passionate learner, watching online CE courses in her spare time, if she's not out training and walking her dog Jake.

Thank you Jessica!! 😊

Vet technician spotlight #1 - Tonya

Tonya is our longest-tenured vet tech, starting here fresh out of Kirkwood College in 1998. She is a passionate advocate for complete pet care, loves teaching clients about puppy care and training, and is certified in PennHIP testing for dogs. She enjoys working on the interesting sick pet cases as well as the more routine health exams. We can count on her to be a bit silly at times, lightening the mood here in the clinic. Outside the clinic, she enjoys working out, garage sales, crafting and spending lots of time with her family.

Thank you Tonya!!!! 😊
