Our hens are acting like it's spring already! They are loving this weather. We got 9 eggs on Tuesday and 10 yesterday! In winter with the lack of sunlight they need to lay, eggs are not expected at all so to get so many is quite surprising ☺️

The bloom is a protective protein on the outside of the egg. Some hens have a heavy bloom which makes for some beautiful colors. The interesting thing is when you wash the egg you see the color change and as it dries it changes back again.

This is Luna Lovegood. We named her after the character from Harry Potter because of her very friendly and odd behavior. When she was a chick she would rather hang out with people than other chickens. When she got older she would rather stand on the roof of the run and watch the road, avoid the other chickens, and follow me around than do normal chicken behaviors like foraging or dirt bathing.

We bought her as an ISA brown which start laying eggs at 18-20 weeks. Well 20 weeks came and went and no sign of laying an egg. So I started to wonder if she was secretly laying eggs so I spent weeks trying to catch her with no luck. So then we wondered if she was a starlight green egger because they look similar and the green Eggers start laying later than ISA browns.

So then 25 weeks old and I finally caught her in the nest box. She stayed in only about 20 minutes (most are in for at least an hour) and crept out quietly (most sing when they are done). Turns out she is an ISA brown hen because she laid a brown egg. So either she was 5 weeks late starting to lay or she's been secretly laying for weeks. πŸ˜‚ She is the strangest chicken we have ever had and very well suited to her name.
