Thank you Elgin Public Museum for sharing this great information!

During the winter season, bison usually head to lower ground, as the snow and temperatures are usually milder there, it’s also easier to find snacks. Their muscular hump supports a massive head, aka a snowplow that can clear away drifts and uncover buried grasses to dine on. Yum.

But do bison get cold? Maybe their demeanor, but as far as body warmth, they utilize a dense fur coat along with layers of fat to stave off the wind and cold. Remember, bison are wild animals and are unpredictable. Keep a safe distance and be thoughtful about asking about their week. What do you mean it is only Tuesday?

We are sad to announce the loss of the zoo’s oldest white tail deer due to failing health. Ruby was approximately 15 1/2 years old. She joined the zoo family as an adult deer just prior to the zoo reopening in 2014.

Happy 104th Birthday to THIS place -- Elgin Public Museum! In November 1920, after 13 years of sitting dormant after construction, we opened our doors to an overflow crowd as the Elgin Audubon Museum, besides bird taxidermy featuring pieces from founders George & Mary Lord's collection. It's been a wild ride ever since, of ups and downs, but we've always picked ourselves up, dusted ourselves off, and gotten back to the business of educating and inspiring wonder in the world. Come visit us on the weekend, Saturday/Sunday 12-4 -- Adults $3, Kids 3-12 and Seniors 60+ $2, Free for under 3, Museum Members and Elgin Twp. Senior Access Passes.

On this day in 2016 Takoda arrived…..🙂
