Among dog trainers, dog parks are the Mother of all Controversies. We talk a lot about safety measures for those who use them. Here is one important portion.

“Here’s what we recommend. If you are familiar with your local dog park and the dogs who usually frequent it, make use of that park if your own dog plays well there. Avoid bringing favorite toys with you if your dog will object to sharing them. When you arrive at the park, do not immediately go in through the gates. We cannot stress this enough. Pause outside the fence and observe what is happening inside. Take 5 minutes to watch. Do you see happy dogs playing as you would want? Or do you see bullying and harassment? Is there hu***ng, neck biting, or dogs being overwhelmed as we discussed earlier in this chapter? If so, walk away and turn the time into a nice neighborhood walk with no tension. But if the dogs are playing well and your dog wants to join, by all means, take your dog in.”

How do you respond when your dog gets anxious? If you start petting her and using your "baby" voice, you might be making it worse. This lets your dog know that something is up and she is right to be scared. Instead, try acknowledging your dog neutrally, then going back to whatever you were doing. If your dog knows that you're not afraid, she has less reason to be.

Imagine visiting a stranger's home. They seem to have a lot of rules, but they will not tell you what those rules are. Instead, the stranger yells at you every time you do something wrong. Sounds like a nightmare, doesn't it? But this is what many dogs deal with everyday. Their owners wait for their dog to mess up, usually by doing something that feels natural to the dog like barking or jumping up, and then getting upset. Focus your training on teaching the rules and you will find that you have to correct bad behavior less often.

All dogs have that puppy power. It doesn't matter if you're adopting an older dog from a shelter or obtaining a puppy from a breeder, your dog can be trained to be the perfect family member with a little bit of love, knowledge of dog training techniques, and an understanding of doggy care.

Remember that lots of dog breeds benefit from long walks and a lot of time outdoors. Shelties, for example, need at least an hour of walking every day, and more is often even better.

Sometimes, when dogs misbehave, it's because they would benefit from some dog training. But sometimes, their behavior can be directly linked to not getting enough exercise. Without the physical and mental stimulation that comes from those long walks, you may find that they find other less desirable outlets for all their pent-up energy.
