Our week started off with some amazing visitors! The Stockton First Grade came to the shelter and were surprised to find the Grinch here to greet them! Our Volunteer, Trish Bianchetta, informed the kids the correct way to ask the Grinch permission to pet his dog "Max". There was a bit of hesitation at approaching him, but he was in an unusually good mood, probably because they brought us so many amazing donations!! The kiddos then enjoyed playing with our cats & kittens. Thanks for all the gifts, fun, and holiday spirit Stockton First Grade! 💓🐾🎄

Mac is currently in foster and having a great time. He is loving all the love and attention he is getting. He is such a sweet boy who craves human attention and affection. He is around 2 other dogs and is doing well with them. He is also a good boy with the cats in the home too, recognizing when enough is enough for them. These are things we wouldn't have known about him if he wasn't in a foster home. When he was here at the shelter he was very anxious. He would pant alot and look sad. He was picky with treats and wouldn't eat his food very well. He is no longer picky with treats and is eating well. He is so happy to be in a foster home while he waits for his forever home. Fostering helps our animals show their true selves.

Today Safe Haven was thrilled to host 6 employees of Merkle International, Inc. from Galena, as they participated in a Day of Giving. These exceptional volunteers helped us with building maintenance and socializing pets.

We are truly grateful for all the help they gave to us. The shelter looks fantastic and our pets enjoyed the attention they were given.

Dog Gen Pop Walk Through! All these cute faces are staring at me, asking what's next? We've been outside, we had breakfast, went outside again...but we still want love and attention! Thank goodness we have a dog volunteer today to help with just that. But many days we don't. We sure could use at least 4 more dog volunteers, especially for afternoons. We’re walking into Wednesday wagging our tails for Simba! Get to know Simba from his bio below and then schedule a time to come visit him for yourself! I am a playful guy who can be distrustful of new people. In fact I really bark at new people and may scare them...I need time to accept them, but treats helped me learn to trust the people here at the shelter. And once I trust you get ready for PLAYTIME! I love running and playing in the yard, and will run up and hug you! I'm not sure about the other dogs here at the shelter, I tend to bark at them. I haven't really had may chances to meet a dog in my life, so if I do go to a home with another dog it may take some time to adjust. I do like kids, sometimes I can get carried away and knock them over when I get really excited. If you think you have it in your heart to welcome me into your home, you should apply for me. I’m all about playtime, especially with my sister at the shelter, but what I really dream of is a cozy house and a loving family. I absolutely love running around outside and might get a bit too excited and jump up to greet you (I just can't help myself when I see my favorite humans!). At 42 pounds, I sometimes forget my size, so I'll need a bit of training. But trust me, I'm worth it—I'll be the most loyal boy you could ever wish for. Our Story

Safe Haven runs a small shelter in the northwest corner of Illinois. Safe Haven is the temporary home for dogs and cats while they are waiting for their furever homes. We can house 13 dogs and 12 cats/kittens. We are located on Route 20 just west of the village of Elizabeth, Illinois in beautiful Jo Daviess County Illinois. We are a 501(c)(3) not for profit and run our shelter completely on the generous donations of our supporters. We get no government funding. Our hours for visitation are daily (including weekends) 10 am to 3 pm, or by appointment. Come visit us! You might find your new best friend waiting for you here.
