Meet Suntan Lotion, the cutest little bunny with a sunscreen nose 🐇

This adorable 3.4lb fluffer was found hiding out in someone’s chicken coop in early March, and now he's ready to hop into his new home! With his characteristic white nose and floofy tufts, Suntan Lotion is too cute to resist. He’s a sweet little guy who likes his snacks and absolutely loves freeze-dried strawberries as a treat. He has been a bit territorial with another male rabbit while at the shelter, so we think he may prefer to be the only male bun in the home.

Is your home a little too quiet? Do you love the sounds of snoring? Say hello to Ge**er Baby!

This sweet 5 year old Frenchie is looking for a special forever home. Ge**er Baby suffers from BOAS (Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome) — a condition that affects his ability to breathe. His BOAS is considered severe and hugely impacts his ability to live a comfortable life. His breathing difficulties need to be addressed surgically to give him a chance at the quality of life he deserves. Without it, even day-to-day life can cause him to struggle for air and even pass out. Our shelter is not able to perform the specialized surgery that Ge**er Baby needs so he is seeking an adopter who is willing and able to help this sweetheart live a more comfortable life.
He also has a delicate back, so jumping and wrestling with dog buddies is a no-go for this little chunk right now. Despite his physical challenges, Ge**er Baby is not a super low energy guy — he’s just got more energy than his body is able to handle! Because he doesn’t know his own limits, he needs someone who can help him stay calm, cool, and safe.

🌞 Dru update!

Earlier this month, we put out an urgent call for a foster home for Dru — and thanks to this amazing community, he found one!

Dru is thriving in his foster home, and we couldn’t be happier to share how well he’s doing. He’s living with several other dogs and is getting along great — he’s super dog-friendly and full of exuberance and energy! He’s been enjoying lots of play sessions with his foster siblings, lounging in the swimming pool, and catching up on some much needed rest and relaxation.

See what his loving fosters have to say about Dru:
“He listens very well and knows sit, down, stay — and we’re working on ‘come’! He loves playing with his big blue ball, a carrot toy, and his favorite... a stuffed pickle. He’s a big fan of turkey and steak, and he loves when other dogs chase him (he’s really fast!). He’s also housetrained, incredibly sweet, and a total cuddlebug who gives the best hugs and kisses. The best part of fostering Dru is watching him blossom and seeing how smart, social, and trusting he is. He's truly wonderful.”

Dru is really living his best life in his foster home, and we’re so grateful to his foster family for giving him a chance to shine!

Meadows has a balanced energy level, and she’s just as happy going on a walk as she is lounging on the couch for a cuddle session. Say hello to Venus, the most ladylike little husky!

Venus is a gentle soul who loves affection and will melt your heart with her sweet nature. She’s a well-behaved lady who can be left alone for several hours without causing any trouble. Venus can be selective with other dogs - she does best with slow introductions and may thrive in a home where she’s the only dog or with a compatible, low-key canine friend. She’s probably not the best fit for a home with cats, as she has a strong prey drive and loves to chase. Venus’ energy level can be described as balanced, and she walks well on leash. She weighs about 50lbs and we think she is around 6 years old. She absolutely adores being petted and will happily shower you with affection in return!

Venus is currently in a loving foster home (not “on-site” at our shelter) while she waits for her forever family. If you are interested in meeting Venus, please call Elk Grove Animal Services at 916-687-3042 to arrange a meet and greet.

Tom Tom the 8-9 year old teddy bear is looking for a loving home! 🧸

He’s housetrained, good with kids, and the perfect companion if you're looking for a mellow family dog to cuddle with. He's a senior pup who enjoys his naps and low-key lifestyle. He’s been around a dog-savvy cat in a foster home, and we think he may do alright with a feline companion in his future home. He would probably prefer to be your only dog.

Tom Tom is currently fighting heartworm, so he is available for foster-to-adopt while he undergoes treatment through our shelter.

It’s kitten season, and we’re bracing for a huge influx of adorable little kitties who need care, love, and support to thrive. We can’t do it without you!

Fostering kittens is an incredible way to make a difference in the lives of these vulnerable little babies. All it takes is a little bit of space in your heart and home, and we’ll provide the rest — from supplies to support. Whether you're a first-time kitten foster or experienced, we’ll guide you through the process. As a foster, not only do you get to watch these kittens grow, play, and flourish – you save lives!

But we need more than just fosters — volunteers are just as crucial. Whether you're helping clean cages, providing cuddles, or feeding kittens, your time will have a huge impact. Every hour you give helps us create the best possible environment for the animals who need it most.

We need our community's help! 🆘

We need to find adopters or committed fosters for several of our adoptable, young dogs. These loving pups are struggling with severe kennel stress and are desperate to get out of the shelter.

Q: "I have to travel occasionally and won't be home for a few days - is there somewhere the pet can stay?"
A: Absolutely! We always have a place at the shelter for our pets - so if a foster has to travel or gets sick, we can arrange for the pet to stay with us while their foster is unavailable.

Q: "I want to foster, but I don't have any dog food/supplies- is that okay?"
A: We are more than happy to provide all necessary supplies to fosters including food and medications!

Q: "Where can I find more information about the dogs in this post?"
A: All of our adoptable pets are viewable on our website, and you may see some of our pets posted on our Facebook and Instagram pages with a bit more info. Meet adoptable Josh Hartnett!

This medium-sized fetch champion loves to play with toys and go for walks at the park. He has done well with other dogs and may enjoy having a doggy friend in his future home. He has spent time in foster where we learned that Josh is housetrained and loves to climb into your lap for cuddles. Josh is smaller than he looks in pictures and weighs less than 40lbs – the perfect size to take on adventures. We estimate his age is 1-1.5 years old. Lincoln has been playful with other friendly dogs at the shelter and has done well with dog-savvy kids while on Doggy Day Out adventures. “Finder states dog was thrown out of a car.”

8-9 year old Frogbert is a refined senior gentleman who deserves so much more than an unceremonious exit from a car. Thankfully, a caring member of the public saw it happen and quickly picked up Frogbert to bring him to our shelter. He had ticks on his body, dirty ears, and his skin was in rough shape. Even though he had been through quite an ordeal, Frogbert greeted every new person he met with a wagging tail – even when getting ticks removed.

It’s now been close to 7 months since Frogbert’s arrival to our shelter (back in September 2024) and he has had quite an amazing glow-up. He’s now looking and feeling much better, and he’s patiently waiting his turn to be adopted. Frogbert has proven to be a gentle and loving companion. He’s currently in a foster home where he’s thriving – housetrained, non-destructive, lower energy, and an expert at lounging! He’s been great with kids of all ages, including toddlers, and would love a family to call his own.

As an older gentleman, Frogbert has little tolerance for rambunctious young dog play and can be selective with other dogs, particularly males. He would likely prefer to be your only dog in his retirement years. If you're looking for a loyal and easygoing companion to join your family, Frogbert might just be your perfect match!

Senior spotlight!

Kiwi is about 8 years old and weighs a solid 16lbs. He’s a laid-back guy who enjoys his quiet time, watching birds from the window, and soaking up the sun during a good nap. He absolutely LOVES squeeze treats like Churu – they'll win him over every time! One of his other great joys in life is feather wand toys and they sure can get this chunky monkey moving! If you're looking for a calm, affectionate companion who appreciates a good play session, Kiwi might be your next BFF.

Kiwi has had some UTIs before, so his diet should include wet food & plenty of water (extra hydration) and adopters should be prepared to keep an eye on his bathroom habits. If you are interested in adopting Kiwi and want to learn more about his medical history, we are happy to go over it in more detail with you. Kiwi is currently “on-site” at our animal shelter and you can come visit him any time during our open hours.

He has plenty of energy and loves to have fun, whether it’s running around with his favorite toys or heading out on a new adventure. Chip loves to play with other pups and could be a great addition to a household with a doggy friend or two. He also has a soft spot for getting petted and enjoys a good cuddle session with his human friends. If you’re looking for a playful companion to join your family, Chip is your guy – come meet him at Elk Grove Animal Services!

We think Chip Skylark is a little over 1 year old and he weighs about 60lbs. He is currently “on-site” at our animal shelter, so you can come by and meet him during our open hours (no appointment necessary). Currently adoptions are FREE at Elk Grove Animal Services through March 30th!
