Did you know that Anoka Equine offers stallion collection, semen freezing, and storage as part of their reproduction services.

So, why freeze semen?? Having an abundant supply of frozen semen means there is no need for on demand collections. It provides security knowing you have the preservation of fertility with your aging stallions and with those that are lost unexpectedly. It allows you to maintain a competitive edge in the show ring through the breeding season, and market nationally, all while being able to cover mares as needed. It can even allow for an increased volume of mares you are able to cover in any given breeding season. Generally, less collections are needed overall, there is no semen waste, post-thaw motility lends consistent results, and you have access to the semen at any time.

Don't miss out! The busy breeding season is just winding down, making now the perfect time to freeze your stallion's semen. Contact Anoka Equine's reproduction department at 763-441-3797 for more information or to schedule an appointment.

We look forward to working with you and your stallions!

Thank you farriers!

It's National Farriers Week! Let's celebrate the hard work that our farriers put in daily to partner with equine veterinarians and ensure the health and well-being of our horses. Proper hoof care is essential for a sound and happy horse, so it goes without saying that a skilled farrier is both a necessity and a tremendous asset.

Don't forget to give a shoutout to your farriers this week and show them your appreciation for their dedication to their craft!

Attention - We have an important message from our Breeding Department.

If you are planning on breeding your mare in the spring of 2024, the time to start preparing is now!

December 1st is a key date for breeders, as this is the day you should turn on your barn and/or paddock lights to help your mares cycle in early February.

Mares need around 16 hours of light each day to cycle properly. An easy way to give them the light they need is to turn on your barn lights about 30 minutes before sunset and turn them off around 11 pm.

We recommend using timers to control your lights to help keep your mares on track.

You don't need to keep your mares in a spotlight - they just need to be in enough light to read a book or newspaper in every corner of their stall.

Here are some additional tips for helping your mare cycle in the beginning of February:

-Make sure she is in good body condition.
-Provide her with a nutritious diet.
-Give her regular exercise.
-Avoid exposing her to stress.
-Work with your veterinarian to monitor her reproductive cycle.

By following these tips, you can help your mare have a successful breeding season in 2024! Feel free to give us a call if you have any questions getting started!

We have also linked a helpful article from Colorado State University Equine Reproduction Laboratory https://vetmedbiosci.colostate.edu/erl/2022/12/13/putting-a-mare-under-lights/

This week, for Vet Tech Appreciation Week, we would like to spotlight our talented, compassionate, hard working staff at AE! Keep reading to learn more about Shannon.

Shannon is a CVT and also the tech manager at AE.

Q: How long have you been a part of the AE team?
A: I have been on the AE team for 16 years. It is my first and only “grown up” job directly out of tech school.

Q: What's your favorite part about being an equine vet tech?
A: There are several things that I love about my job but I think my favorite part is seeing our incredible team come together during stressful emergency situations (specifically horses needing to go to colic surgery) and seeing how we can get that horse more comfortable in surgery in a very short period of time. I think our record is 20 minutes from the time the horse enters the clinic to getting them anesthetized and on the surgery table to be prepped for colic surgery. Now, I NEVER want this to happen to anyone’s horse but I am proud to be able to be apart of the team that can provide these services if anyone is ever in need. My second favorite thing is seeing the foals trot out the door to go for walks or to go home after needing to be carried into the clinic on the first day because they were so weak and sick. We all put our hearts and souls into the care of our patients and are devastated when things don’t go as planned but celebrate when they do!

Q: What would you say is your vet med superpower?
A: Veterinarian mind reader! It’s a scary place to be but I tend to know what the vets will want/need before they even know 😊

Q: What advice would you give to a person who is just graduating tech school and heading into their career as a vet tech?
A: Set boundaries for yourself and stick to them. We as caregivers tend to give all that we have to our patients and careers but don’t forget about yourself too! This is one of the most rewarding, challenging, heartbreaking, amazing jobs you may ever be in so take the time to cry and be sad or mad when you need to but always be sure to pick those pieces of yourself back up and keep moving forward. One of the hardest parts of this job is to lose a patient and then have to turnaround and move directly onto the next appointment and pretend that your heart didn’t just shatter into a million pieces. Always take care of yourself in the process of taking care of others.

Thank you, Shannon! We appreciate you and your dedication to AE.

Q: What would you say is your vet med superpower?
A: I always try be the best team player I can be. Busy days and emergencies can go that much better when your team works well together, and you're all on the same page!

Q: What advice would you give to a person who is just graduating tech school and heading into their career as a vet tech?
A: Do not be afraid to ask questions! Try learning something from each case and appointment as they are all different in their own way!

Thank you, Micheyla! We appreciate you!

This week, for Vet Tech Appreciation Week, we would like to spotlight our talented, compassionate, hard working staff at AE!

Abbey is one of our talented Vet Assistants currently attending school to become a Certified Veterinary Technician.

Q: How long have you been a part of the AE team?
A: I have worked at Anoka Equine for a little over 3 years, starting as a stall cleaner before becoming an assistant.

Q: What's your favorite part about being an equine vet assistant?
A: I love being able to work with all types of horses, and their different personalities. Being able to provide the best care for the horses and be a part of their recovery is so rewarding. I work with an amazing group of people, all of the Techs have played a huge role in my growth in the equine industry and my journey to becoming a Vet Tech.

Q: What would you say is your vet med superpower?
A: My superpower is being able to adapt to any horse and their personality no matter the situation, good or bad.

Q: What inspired you to enroll in college to become a vet tech and what advice can you give to someone who is thinking about going to college to obtain a veterinary technology degree?
A: As a kid I would constantly play "doctor" on my dogs, loved watching any type of veterinary shows, and loved when I could tag along to the vet clinic. Seeing what vet techs were able to do, the amount of care they provide, plus the pride and love they have for their job really inspired me. My advice for someone thinking about obtaining their vet tech degree is get as much experience in the field as you can, whether you job shadow or get a job as an assistant. Go to different types of clinics, see what it is like working with different types of animals and in different clinic settings. This will help you see what day to day in a clinic will look like, help you determine what aspect of the veterinary field you want to work in, and help prepare you for school by having some knowledge before hand.
