Waste-Away is lucky to have some incredible employees! Meet Citlali Avila, our Human Resources Generalist!

Q: How long have you been with Waste-Away?
A: The end of March will be 10 months since I’ve started with the company.

Q: What does a regular work day look like for you?
A: I don’t really have a regular day other than Mondays since most of our orientations are done on Mondays and I help with payroll a bit. Every day is different as we never know what someone may need from HR. One day I could be focused on a project and the next I spend most of the day answering employee questions through calls, texts, or emails, and another day I’ll be traveling around the companies distributing information or doing benefit meetings. Every day is different, which is great!

Q: What would you say has been your biggest surprise about working in the waste industry?
A: I’m amazed by the amount of work and coordination that goes into picking up waste and recycling. I had the opportunity to job shadow all the departments in the company, including drivers, and I was able to see how every job is connected. It was like watching gears on a machine. Each one of us makes this huge machine work and we don’t even realize it. To a customer, it’s just getting a bag of trash picket up, but for us, it’s a whole operation.

Q: What advice would you give to someone who is just starting their career?
A: When people tell you the sky is the limit, remember we’ve reached the moon. Your dreams and goals are as small as you allow them to be. Faith in yourself can take you further than you can imagine, so take advantage of every learning opportunity that comes across your way and always believe that you can.

Q: Do you have any pets? If so, could you tell us a bit about them?
A: I have 3 very spoiled dogs. An 11 year old mutt, Kiara, who has been with me through the roughest parts of my life and now I get to give her a happy spoiled life. Santi is a 3-year-old, all-natural Doberman and he is the biggest, sweetest crybaby I’ve ever met. Lastly, my anti-social chocolate lab, C**t, he’s a year and a half, and a huge pain in the butt. They’re all brown, which I think is hilarious.

Waste-Away is lucky to have some incredible employees! Meet Derek Hardman, our Mechanic Weld Shop Lead!

Q: How long have you been with Waste-Away?
A: I’ve been with Mechanics for 7 years.

Q: What does a regular work day look like for you?
A: I never really know what I’ll walk into in the morning. My days change by the hour, but this is also why I like my job.

Q: What would you say has been your biggest surprise about working in the waste industry?
A: I’d say that the smell of trash isn’t as bad as I would of thought, not to say a few things haven’t been very bad.

Q: What are some accomplishments that you’re very proud of? Personal or work related.
A: The ability to bring the weld shop to where it is today which was in part thanks to the people around me that I work with. Also the compactors my team has built and we are always trying to find new ways to make them better.

Q: What advice would you give to someone who is just starting their career?
A: That this is a good company to work for and that personally they’ve worked with me in my time of need, which I truly appreciate.

Q: What has been the toughest challenge you’ve recently faced at work?
A: I don’t find anything to tough as I will find a way to get the job done one way or another. Which I feel is most of us in Mechanics mindsets.

Q: What do you enjoy doing in your free time?
A: Spending time with my family and also messing with car audio.

Q: Do you have any pets? If so, could you tell us a bit about them?
A: I have a pitbull that is a handful but a great protector of my children.

Q: What’s a fun fact about yourself that most people you work with probably wouldn’t know.
A: Not too sure. That if you sit next to me at a stop light, that the speakers in my car you’ll feel the vibrations in your car.

Q: What’s something on your bucket list?
A: I would like to own a 1970 GTO someday.

Waste-Away is lucky to have some incredible employees! Meet Austin Maddux, our Himco Front Load Sales Team Leader!

Q: How long have you been with Waste-Away?
A: I have been part of the Waste-away family since 9/7/2021.

Q: What does a regular workday look like for you?
A: My regular workday starts at our office. I arrive around 8am to turn in paperwork and go over any issues/problems that might be going on within the front load side of the business. I then leave the office around 10-11am, where I go from appointment to appointment. In between appointments, I cold-call potential customers that have a competitor’s containers. I continue this until around 3-4pm where I return home / office to catch up on issues/emails/voicemails that have been sent to me throughout the day that didn’t require immediate assistance.

Q: What are some accomplishments that you’re very proud of? Personal or work related.
A: A personal accomplishment that I am very proud of is purchasing my first home last March. Since March, I have fully renovated all three bedrooms, the kitchen, all landscaping around the house and just new flooring away from completing the basement. I have done everything myself, learning from trial and error. A professional goal that I am proud of is my promotion to Front Load Sales Team Lead. Using some practices and mindsets that worked well for me in the past, I’m very excited to inspire and push our Front Load Sales team to enhance, protect and grow our side of the business.

Q: What has been the toughest challenge you’ve recently faced at work?
A: The toughest challenge I have / am faced with since I have started is to create a book of business in Warsaw / Kosciusko county. I’ve been tasked with getting 100 new accounts by the first of August. Although this will be difficult, thankfully I am not alone in this task. I am backed with an aggressive marketing campaign with the help of our Marketing Coordinator, Erik Bredenkamp, and have excellent guidance and encouragement by our Sales Director, Kyle Woolsey.

Q: What do you enjoy doing in your free time?
A: In my free time, I enjoy playing golf. Although I am terrible, the sunshine and the one good shot of the day keeps me going out. In the spring and summer, I really enjoy yardwork. I strive to have the nicest yard on the block and strive to make my neighbors a little jealous. Most importantly, my favorite thing to do in my free time is watch our Irish. I am a HUGE ND football fan! My favorite thing to do is watching the games on my back deck with a bonfire, cooler and a group of likeminded ND fans. (No Ohio State Fans allowed on the premises.)

Q: Do you have any pets? If so, could you tell us a bit about them?
A: I do have one dog, Cooper. AKA Cooper Gene AKAK the Gene Machine AKAAKA Genes. He is an overweight cocker spaniel. Although he eats twice a day, he is under the impression that he hasn’t eaten all week. His appetite is only shadowed by his lack of personal space awareness. Even though he can be a pain, the best part of my day is walking into the door when I get home to his excitement to see me.
