Waste-Away is lucky to have some incredible employees! Meet Citlali Avila, our Human Resources Generalist!
Q: How long have you been with Waste-Away?
A: The end of March will be 10 months since I’ve started with the company.
Q: What does a regular work day look like for you?
A: I don’t really have a regular day other than Mondays since most of our orientations are done on Mondays and I help with payroll a bit. Every day is different as we never know what someone may need from HR. One day I could be focused on a project and the next I spend most of the day answering employee questions through calls, texts, or emails, and another day I’ll be traveling around the companies distributing information or doing benefit meetings. Every day is different, which is great!
Q: What would you say has been your biggest surprise about working in the waste industry?
A: I’m amazed by the amount of work and coordination that goes into picking up waste and recycling. I had the opportunity to job shadow all the departments in the company, including drivers, and I was able to see how every job is connected. It was like watching gears on a machine. Each one of us makes this huge machine work and we don’t even realize it. To a customer, it’s just getting a bag of trash picket up, but for us, it’s a whole operation.
Q: What advice would you give to someone who is just starting their career?
A: When people tell you the sky is the limit, remember we’ve reached the moon. Your dreams and goals are as small as you allow them to be. Faith in yourself can take you further than you can imagine, so take advantage of every learning opportunity that comes across your way and always believe that you can.
Q: Do you have any pets? If so, could you tell us a bit about them?
A: I have 3 very spoiled dogs. An 11 year old mutt, Kiara, who has been with me through the roughest parts of my life and now I get to give her a happy spoiled life. Santi is a 3-year-old, all-natural Doberman and he is the biggest, sweetest crybaby I’ve ever met. Lastly, my anti-social chocolate lab, C**t, he’s a year and a half, and a huge pain in the butt. They’re all brown, which I think is hilarious.
