Dr. Lammie has more than 34 years experience, not only with small animals but exotic and farm animals also. Our moto is "treat them like they belong to us"...which gets us in trouble sometimes, we spoil them a little too much. :)

Good afternoon!

Starting on August 1st, we are going to require all pets that are needing on the surgery schedule to have a current exam prior to scheduling the surgery. Some of you are already aware of this change, but we had not had a chance to make a public announcement about it.

As of now we are still allowing feral cats that need trapped to be scheduled without a pre-surgery exam and the exam will take place before they are sedated for surgery. All other pets have to have an exam before we can get them on the schedule.

Thank you and we look forward to helping you and your furry friends!

We hope everyone has enjoyed the first few days of spring! Here is just a quick PSA regarding the new vouchers that have been released...

We are aware of the vouchers that have been distributed by Randolph County Humane Society of ElkinsWV and although we do accept these vouchers we MUST have them at the time of surgery drop off. We cannot accept vouchers after the surgery has already been performed.
We also DO NOT hand them out here or have any control over who gets them. Please do not call us asking for vouchers or applications for vouchers as we do not handle those.
Lastly, we are typically a few weeks out for surgery so please be patient with us as we try to fit in all these pets for their procedures. We are not going to be able to get you scheduled the week you call to make an appointment. Please expect around 2-3 weeks wait from the time you call to make an appointment before the actual date of the procedure.

Thank you all for your patience and we look forward to taking care of your furry friends!

We do accept these voucher and we do have openings. Please remember while the voucher covers most of the price you are responsible for the remaining balance! We do not give them our please contact the shelter to receive them.

“We had two cases of bronchitis last week. Both dogs had boarded for Thanksgiving. Both dogs were also current on all vaccinations except for canine flu. We sent special PCR tests to the lab on both these cases.
One dog boarded at a local facility, and showed up positive for Canine Respiratory Coronavirus. This virus is not human coronavirus and it is not the GI coronavirus that is included in some canine vaccines. There is no cross protection with the canine coronavirus vaccine and the respiratory coronavirus. Treatment is supportive care.
The second dog had severe respiratory signs. It had boarded at a kennel in Virginia. No common respiratory pathogens showed up on our PCR tests. My guess is that this dog has the new respiratory disease. We are sending samples to the New Hampshire lab.
In short, I think that this new respiratory infection is present here. Be careful with your dogs until there is more information on this new disease.” - Dr. Eileen J Lammie VMD

11/28/2023

We have had many concerned dog owners calling for information on the mysterious respiratory infection in dogs covered on national news media. We are all concerned.
The latest reports from the University of New Hampshire have found a DNA sequence from affected dogs showing a mycoplasma organism. This organism is a very small bacteria that often lives inside cells.
In the past, we have found mycoplasma cyanos as the cause of chronic coughs and respiratory outbreaks in kennels and doggy day cares in town. We submit PCR samples to the lab to diagnose this organism. The known mycoplasma responds to doxycycline or Zithromax. No one is sure of this new organism. So far, we are not even sure that the new mycoplasma is the only cause of this respiratory syndrome.
As far as we know, the infection has not been diagnosed in West Virginia, but cases have occurred in at least 10 states all through the country.
Until more is known, it may be prudent to limit exposure to dog parks, dog day cares, and other areas where dogs congregate. Also, most clinics are recommending that dogs be brought up to date for other respiratory infections that could compound an infection with the new organism. This means parainfluenza, Bordetella, and flu vaccines should be up to date, especially for dogs exposed to other dogs.
We are recommending – but not requiring – that all surgeries in the next few weeks be vaccinated for distemper, parainfluenza, Bordetella, and canine flu until we know more about this situation.
Current information should be posted on this site https://colsa.unh.edu/new-hampshire-veterinary-diagnostic-laboratory/canine-respiratory-outbreak
The map of cases is posted below.
