Did you know that a horse has approximately 700 muscles?
There are three types of muscles: skeletal, smooth, and cardiac. These muscles can be further distinguished by the fibers they are composed of, Type I and Type II. Type II can then be further separated into Type II A and Type II B! All these types of muscles and muscle fibers are responsible for different things. Some muscles are built for endurance, some are designed for quick reactions. The ratio of types of muscles can vary between breeds, which might explain a small part in the difference in speed and athleticism of certain horses.
Regardless of the breed, these muscles are pretty important when you decide to chuck a saddle on their back, swing your rear end into it, and tell the crew, “Hustle! We’re burnin’ daylight!”
But no matter the discipline, English, Western, rodeo, pleasure or trails, your horse spends a lot of their life moving and engaged. Massage and red light therapy are helpful tools that can keep a working horse feeling and moving their best.
