Josie’s Misfit Ranch cares and advocates for misfit animals so they can find forever homes and live their best lives. “Misfit” animals are wounded in body or spirit who have been discarded, mistreated or ignored because they are considered less than “perfect.” We show these animals the love and compassion they deserve, build their confidence, and focus on all they can do instead of what they can’t

so they can become important members of their forever families. Josie is a beautiful redheaded diva from North Carolina, who was saved by another dog rescue just hours before she was scheduled to be euthanized. She was adopted by Marla Pugh, who had previously been a crazy cat lady, but wanted to expand her lunacy to dogs as well. Josie became Marla’s best friend, serving as her family when she lived away from her human one. Josie and Marla settled into their 10-acre ranch located in Ellensburg, Washington in 2019. Inspired by her love for Josie, Marla vowed to help other animals and connected with Mikey’s Chance Rescue in the Tri-Cities. It was through this partnership where she fell in love with special needs animals. Marla added to her pack with Xander, a one-eyed German Shepherd; Loki, a miniature German Shepherd whose legs were deformed from birth; and Sophie, a German Shepard who has a troubled past and lost half her sight to pannus, a degenerative eye condition. Over the years, Marla fostered several animals – all with special needs.

Wally went to our friend and training partner Paige at Muddy Paws Pet Care & Training Services to learn some self control. This big lug is all heart but can run people over with his block head as he has NO idea how big he is. We are so grateful to Paige and our other trainers for helping us make our dogs more adoptable and setting them up for success. We just hope Paige isn’t injured by Wally’s exuberance! Foster FOUND ❤️!

Meet Biscuit (formerly Hades), a 1-year-old Shar Pei. Her owner was struggling to care for her and asked us to step in. (You may have seen our post about her this weekend.) She is a sweet girl but needs entropion surgery and to be spayed. She will go to a temporary foster while we look for a more permanent place for her to recover. If there was ever a time for you to open up your home to a dog in need, it is now! If you are worried about what fostering entails we can have you talk to other fosters in our network. We are heartbroken to report that one of our misfit alumni, sweet Stella, recently crossed the rainbow bridge. Stella came to us from the Ellensburg shelter in 2022 and was the sickest cat there, losing weight and fur. It took us awhile but we figured out she had bad allergies and got her on special food and treatment. She went to a great foster who helped nurse her back to health and was then adopted by Gary and J’aime, an amazing couple who loved Stella fiercely. She thrived with their attention but then recently took a sudden turn. Images showed lymphoma and her breathing became worse. We were lucky to be able to say goodbye to Stella and thank Gary and J’aime for being such amazing pet parents and for giving her the life she deserved. We are so grateful she knew what real love is and didn’t die in a shelter. She was a sassy, beautiful and sweet girl who won’t be forgotten.

Little Peanut, the blind and deaf senior yorkie rescued from neglect, is doing great after his dental surgery today! Chelsey missed the patter of cat feet after losing her sweet Tuxedo cat Holly more than a year ago. Cabernet, one of five stray kittens rescued from outside a winery, is now helping to fill the void. Chelsey is so in love with this little girl and Cabernet’s loud purr seems to indicate the feeling is mutual. We are so happy for them both!

Leah went to her surgeon in Kirkland and got a clean bill of health today! She’s out of the cone, done with her meds and immediately wanted to play with her foster brother Frankie. Leah broke her femoral head sometime in her past and never got medical treatment, causing it to heal improperly and cause her constant pain. Amputation was the only way to get her pain free and she doesn’t seem to know she’s even missing a leg. She will be going back to her foster family tomorrow and will be up for adoption (as is Frankie) through www.josiesmisfitranch.org

Congratulations to Ethan who adopted one of the wine club kittens, Malbec, this weekend. Ethan lives in Tacoma and needed a friend for his cat Percy after his other cat Jack passed away. He was over the moon for this playful and gorgeous girl! Thank you for choosing rescue Ethan!

Ellensburg Police Officer Trevor Rogers is not only a protector of our community but also a protector of animals. When we took in a litter of kittens found freezing near Fred Meyer he stepped up to foster. And sure enough, Freddy, one of the kittens in his care, ended up deciding he was already home! We are so happy for this foster fail! Thank you for all you do Trevor!

Emma and Garrett found 3 tiny freezing kittens on campus this fall and through their network got them to us for care. But they never quite shook the connection they had for these sweet kids, dubbed the cheese kittens as they were named after one of our favorite things … cheese! Gorgonzola and Brie found their forever homes recently and Emma and Garrett decided Parmesan had to be there’s! We are so happy for Parm and her new family! Some things are meant to be!

Little Peanut is healthy enough to have a dental surgery to get rid of his bad teeth that are hurting him. The surgery will also cut down on bacteria that can make him sick. 🌟Spotlight of the Day!🌟

🐾 Meet Nova! 🐾

Nova is a sweet 4-year-old Australian Kelpie mix, weighing 58 pounds (a bit on the heavier side, but we’re working on it!). Unfortunately, her story starts on a sad note—Nova came to us as a stray after her owners decided they no longer wanted her. Despite being chipped, they claimed to have no connection to her. A local volunteer shared that Nova’s previous owner was homeless and had left her at the park to care for new puppies instead. Nova has been found and returned a few times, but now she’s ready for a fresh start!

Despite her tough past, Nova is full of love! She’s super friendly, gets along with dogs of all sizes and cats, and even does a little happy dance when she’s excited. She’s an active girl who loves walks, and we’re confident she’ll shed those extra pounds in no time, especially with her treat-motivated personality and energetic spirit.

Nova is ready to bring joy and laughter into a loving home. Could that be yours? 🐶💕

Remember Peanut? He and his sister were found in horrible neglect and brought by a Good Samaritan to our friends at Mt Stuart Animal Hospital. His sister was beyond saving, but this old guy, despite being blind and deaf, showed us signs of still wanting to fight. He went to a temporary foster who cleaned him up and got him on track with nutritious food and meds (a photo of him when we first got him is in the comments) and then a permanent foster offered to love him as long as he needed it. He has spent most days cuddling with them and has a gated area in the living room dubbed the “peanut zone.” As he has been feeling healthier and safer he’s started showing his true personality as seen here! It’s amazing what love can do! Peanut is definitely coming out of his shell! (Pun intended) A huge thank you to the fosters who have given Peanut their hearts and attention so he can live the rest of his life happy and in comfort. You are our heroes! ❤️❤️❤️

Baby Boltz is fully recovered and headed back to a foster in Ellensburg and couldn’t be more excited! This pup had been living with his homeless owner and wasn’t vaccinated. As a result he contracted parvo, a deadly and very contagious virus. We don’t have a facility where we could treat him safely so we sent him to our friends at Mikey's Chance Canine Rescue in Kennewick. There, they have a dedicated space for parvo puppies and an experienced foster to care for them. He received Metronidazole for his diarrhea and cernia for the nausea and to prevent vomiting as well as sub q fluids to prevent dehydration. He is now testing negative and as you can see … ready to be a puppy! Thank you to all of you who contributed to his care, to Mikey’s Chance for their help, and to his new foster who will get him tomorrow (and deal with all this energy!) And a huge thank you to the woman who originally took him in and got him the help he needed … she is our hero! Sage and Sailor are so happy with their toys and scratching post from the generous donors who picked them from the Mt Stuart Animal Hospital giving tree. Their foster could not believe how generous their secret Santa was … although the boys say they were extra good this year.

Meet Scout! This 5-year old, 25 pound bundle of energy was given up by his family and is looking for someone to love him forever. He would do best in a home with either no other dogs or laid back small dogs. According to his foster: “He LOVES fetch. Holy cow! And he’s SOOO LOVEY. It’s adorable. He’s absolutely incredible on the leash. Perfect in his crate. Completely accident free aside from one scared poop the day we brought him.
