This is Kratos—an 8-year-old Cane Corso whose journey reminded all of us why we do what we do.
On April 27, Kratos arrived at the Emergency Animal Hospital of Ellicott City in critical condition. He collapsed in our parking lot and was rushed inside by our fast-acting nursing team. Within moments, his heart stopped. Our team immediately jumped into action, initiating CPR. Thanks to their training, experience, and sheer determination, Kratos' heart began beating again.
But the fight wasn’t over.
Kratos was diagnosed with Gastric Dilatation-Volvulus (GDV)—a life-threatening emergency where the stomach twists on itself, cutting off blood supply. His family made the brave decision to proceed with emergency surgery. The procedure was a success, but his road to recovery was far from easy.
Kratos spent four days in our ICU, receiving around-the-clock care. He was weak, and his prognosis was uncertain. As the days passed, it began to seem like his body was giving up. His family, heartbroken and full of love, made the incredibly difficult decision to say goodbye.
But Kratos had other plans.
As he was wheeled in for his final goodbye, something extraordinary happened. The moment he saw his family, he perked up. He lifted his head. Then—against all odds—he stood up and jumped off the gurney. His family saw it in his eyes: he wasn’t done fighting. With renewed hope, they chose to continue his care.
And Kratos didn’t look back.
Thanks to his fierce will to live, his family’s unwavering love, and the relentless commitment of our medical team, Kratos turned a corner. After four long, emotional days in the ICU, he walked out the front door and went home.
At his follow-up visits, Kratos has continued to thrive—and every tail wag reminds us of just how special his story is.
To our team: Thank you for showing up, for never giving up, and for giving your hearts to every patient.
To Kratos’ family: Thank you for trusting us through the hardest days.
And to Kratos: Thank you for reminding us all what it means to fight.
