Happy National Dog Day!🐾🐶💖 We wish you and your furry loved ones the best day ever, and hope it was full of sniffs, rolls in the grass, and belly rubs.

The pups pictured here all got walked today by your friends at Pet Fit, and they had a blast in the sunshine (while crossing their paws for some more breezy weather like last week!) 🐾😊

It's International Blind Dog Day! This holiday was made specifically to celebrate those pups who either became visually impaired or were born that way, and how loving the world and the people around them is so much more than what they can 'see.'

Maddie (pictured here) is one of several Pet Fit doggy clients who happens to be blind. She wasn't born blind, and had to get used to her visual impairment over time by mapping out her surroundings and using all her other senses to the max!

Her blindness hasn't stopped her from rolling around in the grass, playing with her pug siblings, or enjoying some belly rubs. International Blind Dog Day isn't about pity, but recognizing the other ways we can interact and show love.

If you come across a blind dog on a walk or in a shelter, remember that they have adapted to a tough world and have so much love to give!💖🐕

Did you know that there is a common phenomenon known as Black Dog Syndrome that exists in shelters and rescues? Large, black-colored dogs are often passed over or take longer to adopt than their different colored counterparts. The same happens with black cats as well!

Some people think that black dogs are a sign of bad luck or an evil omen, while others attribute the Syndrome to poor lighting and shelter photography. We at Pet Fit wanted to share some photos of our black-coated doggy clients who are the happiest, silliest, and sweetest goobers we know!

If you're thinking of adding a dog to your family, remember to choose based on lifestyle and behavior and not fur color!🖤

Today is National Spoil Your Dog Day! You may be thinking, "Wait a second, I spoil my dog every day!" But today is all about going that extra mile for your best friend and fur baby💖 Here's what to do:

1. Go for a super long walk and let them explore, splash in puddles, and get messy!

2. While on their walk, let them do some biiiig sniffs. Follow their lead, take your time, and let them put that nose to work!

3. After a long, enriching walk, seal the deal with a treat to say, "Great job, all done!" You can place treats in a Kong, snuffle mat, or spread peanut butter on a lick mat to give your pup more time to enjoy their delicacy.

4. Finally, give their water bowls a good scrub with soap and water today, and then fill it up with nice cold water. Bonus points for ice cubes on a hot summer day!

The "Dog Days of Summer" are those days known as the hottest, sultriest, most humid and sweltering of summer! ☀️🌡️We've certainly had some soaring temps and intense heatwaves this summer, but that hasn't stopped us from enjoying the outdoors with our furry friends.

We've loved (safely!) exploring the neighborhood and woods this summer, but we can't say we're not looking forward to Fall!😆

Say, 'Cheese!'😁 An oft-overlooked part of your dog's hygiene routine is their teeth! Keeping your canine's canines healthy and pearly white is an essential part of a happy and long life for your dog. Not to mention cleaner teeth = fresher breath!

In terms of dental care, it's the same as with humans; nothing beats plain old tooth brushing. Make sure to grab a pet-safe toothbrush and toothpaste (they even make brushes that pop right onto your fingertip) and aim for a couple times a week! 🪥

It may take your dog some time to get used to a toothbrush, so some alternatives are tooth wipes, dental treats, and dog chews. Each have their own pros and cons, but are often an easier "sell" to your pooch than regular tooth brushing.

Tooth wipes do a commendable job at wiping off the majority of messes and grime, but won't get every last bit, and can allow plaque to settle into small spaces and in the gum-line.

Dental treats and and dog chews are many dogs' preferred method of tooth-cleaning! They are great way for dogs to engage in natural behavior (i.e. chewing) while also benefiting from the tooth-cleaning properties.

Not every brand is created equal; some treats and chews carry the risk of splintering, or causing broken teeth, allergies, stomach issues, or are choking hazards. Supervision always recommended, and research is key!

An honorable mention: dental supplements, which are added to your dog's food or water and help fight decay but don't replace manual cleaning.

All the options may seem a bit overwhelming, so don't forget you can always turn to your vet for a professional cleaning. Remember, something is better than nothing! Any or many of the above options are great ways to care for your dog's smile and overall wellbeing 🐶❤️🦷

Gear Highlight: the Freedom No-Pull Harness!

Awhile back we highlighted one of our favorite safety items, the coupler. As a refresher, the coupler is what connects the harness to your dog's collar, and acts as an extra failsafe should anything get torn or unclipped as we're out walking.

The real star of the show, and today's highlight: the Freedom No-Pull Harness!

There are so many different harness, collar, and vest combos and options out there, but at Pet Fit we love pairing the No-Pull Freedom Harness with your dog's collar, coupler, and a leash.

Some things we love about the harness:

1) front and back clips - this allows for a variety of walking styles depending on what your dog is used to, and in some cases of pulling, you can clip to both for two points of security while distributing pressure evenly (instead of at one sharp point, or pressure solely at your dog's neck)

2) the harness features several loop designs (similar to a martingale collar!) that helps distribute force and tension along the chest, and again avoids sharp pressure in any one area

3) every harness from XS to XXL comes fully adjustable, ensuring we give each doggy client the perfect goldilocks fit, and after years of daily use (multiple dogs in the rain, snow and shine!) every harness is in great condition

Breed Fun Facts! Today's breed: the Boston Terrier🐾

Originating from - you guessed it - Boston, the Boston Terrier is a compact canine known for its friendliness and trainability.

1) Boston Terriers were originally bred for blood sports and rat-catching in the 19th century by crossing bulldogs with terriers, but later became beloved companion dogs for the wealthy. Breeding for companionship has led to that sweet, eager-to-please nature of the Boston Terriers we see today.

2) Boston Terriers are always styled to the nines in their signature tuxedos!🌟 They have a very short black and white fur coat that tends to be low on the shedding level.

3) Bostons are a brachycephalic dog, meaning they have a short snout and flatter face than other breeds. When sleeping, panting, or very excited, you can hear them snoring, snorting, and snuffling from a mile away!😆

4) It's always good to keep in mind that their shorter snout means that it's more difficult for them to regulate their body temperature. Hot or cold, Boston Terriers need a little extra time to adjust, but a bonus in wintertime is adorable jackets for your pup!

5) Bostons have prominent, large eyes - the better to gaze adoringly at you, my dear! They are energetic, intelligent, and with those big eyes and easy trainability, have all the makings of a great watchdog. It's no wonder that they are one of the nation's most popular breeds.💖

Meow!🐱 Though Pet Fit has no *official* kitty clients, we absolutely adore the cat siblings and friends of our dogs. All our walkers love taking an extra moment to give these feline fellows some chin scratches, make sure their waters are topped off, and greet them with some happy "pspsps"s!

Whether they're a collared companion or a friendly neighborhood stray, these cats really brighten our day.☀️ And they're a great photography exercise - just try snapping a non-blurry pic of your cat!😆

TGIF from the Pet Fit Fam!

After a scorching week you and your pup deserve to treat yourselves to some fun weekend plans!

If you’re up for an adventure, head out to the Trolley Trail (paved and easy!) or Buzzards Rock trail (Easy to Medium, dirt trail) for some hiking.

If the summer heat is getting to you and your pooch, get some ice cream at Park Ridge Creamery - they’re dog friendly and you can both have a scoop while lounging on their relaxing and shaded patio.

Finally, if you and your dog have had your fill of the outdoors and are ready for some lounging on the couch with the A/C on, we recommend a doggy movie night! Throw on some "Homeward Bound" for a classic pick, "Isle of Dogs" if you're craving an indie flick, or "Togo" for some adventure!

It's National Hydration Day! 💦

Staying hydrated is extra important during these hot and humid summer months, especially amidst these heat waves we've been getting 🔥🌡️ A great way to keep up on your liquids is to set some reminders or alarms on your phone to drink water throughout the day, and you can amp up your hydration by adding electrolytes to your drink!

In terms of keeping your dog happy and hydrated, always give them access to fresh, clean, and cool water. It's also important to keep your doggy bowls clean to prevent gunk and biofilm from building up! We also like adding ice to water bowls after a particularly steamy walk ❄️

While out on a walk, we love bringing along a doggy water bottle! There are tons of great options like the and water bottles, or you could bring a regular water bottle and use a collapsible doggy bowl.
