🐴 Mae – Trail Horse for Sale 🐴

Looking for your next trail partner? Meet Mae, an 8-year-old grade mare who’s as sweet as she is stunning!

🌟 Why You’ll Love Mae:
✔️ Trail-savvy and enjoys group rides but is happy to go solo, too!
✔️ Happy to trail ride ba****ck
✔️ Happy to work in the ring, will pop over a little crossrail and will WTC both directions. Could make a cute little game horse or low level jumper.
✔️ Sound and sane, wears front shoes - PPE welcome at buyers expense

Mae has been extensively trail ridden, thrives on a schedule and is always up for an adventure, whether that means riding through the woods on the windiest day of the year or a relaxing ba****ck ride with your dog at the end of the day (yes, your dog can ride her too). Mae is forward, with a big stride, and would not be suitable for a rider that cannot confidently walk/trot without assistance. While she is a red headed mare, she is easy to get along with and there isn’t much she won’t tolerate. Price is negotiable and her owner would love to stay connected with her in her new home, with that being said, a good home is an absolute must!

Interested? Reach out to us to learn more or schedule a visit. Mae could be the perfect addition to your family!

Good horses take time.

This is the story of one of the most difficult horses who has turned into one of the best around.

In August 2022, a shipper dropped off two horses who were pulled from Bowie kill pen in Texas. Both of them were emaciated, with various injuries and were on the truck to Mexico.

When the shipper pulled up to the farm, he said “one leads and seems friendly, the other doesn’t and he kicks, how do you want to do this?”

Well, it wasn’t Des or I’s first rodeo with this kind of thing, so we quickly set up a round pen panel chute into the stalls we had set up and got to unloading them both. The little paint pony was an angry, scared little thing, but his friend (formerly Squash, currently Arlo, owned by Brenda Miller Brennan) was a big sweet goofy boy. Both were in desperate need of groceries, and were pretty gross overall. Sprout had a large gash on his butt that oozed and had maggots in it, and both had various cuts and wounds.

Now , the month previous , Des and I had both been helping friends at a local rescue with a large cruelty case very local to us and were actually rehabbing a few barely handled mustangs from that case at the same time. I think all we did for the month of August was soak alfalfa cubes and carefully refeed semi feral horses. 😂

From the beginning, Squash was always easy. He gained weight quickly, he was super friendly, he was easy to handle, and it turned out that he was extremely quiet under saddle, and was really happy to trail ride all day. He quickly found a new home with Brenda.

Sprout was-from the beginning-incredibly smart, incredibly angry, incredibly scared, and incredibly feral. I have no idea about what actually happened in Sprout’s past, but I can imagine that whatever experiences he had with people were the worst kind of experiences that you could imagine.

As you can guess, the little angry, unhandled, feral pony was not exactly thrilled about having us clean out the wound on his hind end. It was a great time for all of us, let me tell you, and boy can a 13.3 hand pony pack a punch.

On this farm, we do get a lot of BLM mustangs, horses from different and difficult situations, and horses with all sorts of behavioral issues, but undoubtably, Sprout was in our top 5 of the most fearful horses we have ever had. His fear transcended anything—no treat would bribe him, no situation was anything but his terms, and nothing would convince him humans weren’t the bane of his existence.

It has taken two years to gain that little pony’s trust, and a show him that not all humans suck.

It has been a combined training effort from Des and I, and all of our clients over the years offering treats, love, and support, but watching this pony enjoy his life with his little human has to be one of the most rewarding things to watch.

This once emaciated, maggot-infested, feral little thing is one of the cutest and fanciest little creatures I have ever seen. I love watching him thrive in his new life and compete with the best of them with our show team.

He is a hard working, serious pony who is quiet, brave, and forward thinking. And I’m happy to say that he has found a great match with a dedicated and talented kid who takes this just as seriously as he does.

And just a reminder to anyone out there looking at this post (if you’ve made it to the end) , good horses take time. And every horse deserves a chance to shine. ✨

Thank you to Greg and Kristin Smith for having the patience to watch this little seed Sprout into something special. 🌱

Here’s a video of Sprout with random clips from the day he got here until this past weekend condensed into less than two minutes. I am the worst at documenting things and remembering to take photos and videos, but I’m getting better 🤣
