February is National Pet Dental Health Month. Dental health is a huge part of your pet’s overall health, which is why dental checkups are so important. Regular toothbrushing is also good for pets to reduce the development of dental disease.

February is National Pet Dental Health Month! Did you know about 80% of dogs and 70% of cats have some form of dental disease by the age of 3? Left untreated, dental disease isn’t just bad for your pet’s teeth; it can also cause pain. That’s why regular dental exams are so important.

Our very own receptionist, Brigette, opened up her home and heart to Luna this past week. Luna is so sweet and loving, although she does have her crazy puppy side as well!

*An Update on the Reported Respiratory Infection in Dogs*

We’ve fielded many calls about the new canine respiratory infection. We are keeping up with all new reports in the veterinary community and here is what we know so far. The illness appears to start as a fairly routine upper respiratory infection, but many cases progress to pneumonia, which may or may not resolve with traditional therapies, but a residual cough seems to last up to 8 weeks. Veterinarians are New England have submitted samples and the University of New Hampshire has identified at least one new pathogen that seems to be contributing to the disease. These are all preliminary findings and may change as veterinarians investigate further.

Locally, we have not seen any cases in Elmhurst- there have been some cases reported in Moline, IL (quad cities). Our best advice to all dog owners is to minimize contact with other dogs- the disease is thought to be highly contagious. Owners are encouraged to keep dogs currently vaccinated against all respiratory diseases (Bordetella, Influenza, Parainfluenza). And, of course, seek veterinary care for your pet if they exhibit any respiratory signs.
