Training Tip Tuesday: Preparing Your Dog for Thanksgiving! đŠ
Thanksgiving is a time for family, food, and gratitude, but it can also be a little overwhelming for our dogs. Here are some tips to help your pup stay safe and stress-free during the festivities:
1. Create a Safe Space:
If your dog is nervous around people, itâs best to set up a quiet, comfortable space where they can relax away from the activity. Add their bed, favorite toys, and maybe a stuffed Kong or chew to keep them content while you entertain guests.
2. Practice Calm Behaviors in Advance:
Reinforce skills like settling on a mat, staying in a designated spot, or calmly going to their crate. These behaviors can help your dog feel more secure and give you peace of mind during the holiday bustle.
3. Keep Guests Informed:
Let your visitors know about your dogâs preferences. For example, ask them not to approach or try to interact with your dog if theyâre feeling shy.
4. Exercise Before Guests Arrive:
A tired dog is a happy dog! Take them for a walk or engage in some playtime or nose work before the festivities begin to help reduce anxiety and excess energy.
5. Mind the Table Scraps:
Thanksgiving food is delicious, but many items like turkey bones, onions, and chocolate are harmful to dogs. Keep plates out of reach, and consider offering a dog-safe treat so they donât feel left out.
6. Stick to Their Routine:
Dogs thrive on consistency. Try to maintain their regular schedule for meals, walks, and potty breaks to help them feel grounded despite the excitement.
Bonus Tip: If your dog needs to stay in their safe space during the holiday, make it a positive experience. Use calming music or white noise, and give them things to chew or play with while in their quiet space.
Letâs make this Thanksgiving a calm, happy experience for both you and your dog!
