Spring is here, and so are fleas and ticks! 🦟🕷️ These pesky parasites can cause discomfort, skin issues, and even transmit diseases to your beloved dogs. Bark Knight K9 wants to remind you of some key safety tips:

Prevention is key! Talk to your vet about the best flea and tick preventative for your dog (oral, topical, or collar).
Check your dog regularly: After walks, especially in wooded or grassy areas, thoroughly check your dog's fur for ticks. Pay close attention to ears, between toes, and under the tail.
Keep your yard tidy: Mow your lawn regularly, clear leaf litter, and trim bushes to reduce flea and tick habitats.
Recognize the signs: Excessive scratching, licking, or biting can indicate a flea or tick problem.
Treat your home: If you find fleas or ticks on your dog, you'll likely need to treat your home environment as well.

Let's talk leash control! 👋 A safe and enjoyable walk starts with a well-behaved dog on leash. Here are some tips from Bark Knight K9 for better leash manners:

Use the right equipment: A comfortable, well-fitting harness or collar is key. Avoid retractable leashes in busy areas as they can hinder control.
Keep it short and close: A shorter leash (4-6 feet) gives you more control and helps prevent your dog from wandering too far.
Reward loose-leash walking: When your dog walks without pulling, mark the behavior (with a "yes" or clicker) and immediately reward them with a treat.
Be consistent: Everyone who walks your dog should use the same techniques and cues.
Practice in low-distraction environments: Start in a quiet area and gradually introduce more distractions as your dog improves.
Change direction frequently: This helps keep your dog focused on you and prevents them from anticipating the walk.
Stop when pulling occurs: If your dog starts to pull, stop walking until the leash slackens. Only then resume walking.

Think Before You Leave Your Pup! ⚠️

Bark Knight K9 wants to remind everyone about the serious dangers of leaving your dog unattended in a parked car, no matter the season or how quick you think you'll be!

☀️ Hot Weather is Deadly: Cars turn into ovens FAST! On a mild 70°F day, the inside can reach a lethal 109°F in just 30 minutes. Cracking windows does little to help. Heatstroke can cause irreversible damage and even death in minutes. Watch for signs like excessive panting, difficulty breathing, bright red gums, and collapse.

❄️ Cold Weather is Risky Too: Cars trap cold, leading to dangerous hypothermia, especially for vulnerable dogs.

Beyond Temperature, Consider:

Dehydration: No access to water is always a risk.
Anxiety & Stress: Being alone and confined is frightening for many dogs.
Theft: Sadly, unattended pets can be targets.
Accidental Injury: Restless dogs can get hurt or cause damage.
The safest place for your dog when you can't be with them is indoors at home. Let's keep our pups safe year-round!

Welcome to the rescue, Mouse!

Another cat joined the rescue today, a 16 week old female cat named Mouse. She was hanging around outside of a local organization's building, living in a window well. She is now inside enjoying a warm blanket, a big bowl of food, and cat toys. She will be available for adoption as soon as I get her spayed & up to date on shots.

Meet Sky! This unique and fun-loving girl belongs to Shelly and Chris, and she's been on quite a journey. Sky moved here in December and started a board and train, but it wasn't the right fit. Thankfully, we started working together, and she's made incredible progress! She's mastering her basic obedience, and her tricky personality keeps us on our toes! 😉 Now that the weather is warming up, we're excited to continue building her confidence. Sky, you're a star! 🌟
