This is a great example of off-leash control! One of the hardest things for a dog to do is to walk in the heel position for an extended period of time. There are so many distractions (smells, animals, people, cars, blowing leaves etc.) that can break a dogs focus and cause them to break (possibly engaging their prey or hunt drive). Walking long distances at the heel is a mark of a well controlled off leash dog. Mango here will walk with me this entire road without breaking her heel. #dogtrainer #dogtraining #gooddog #gooddoggo
Too often while out walking dogs I come across other dog owners who allow their dogs to run off leash with little to know control. If you can't recall your dog like this video, you shouldn't have your dog off leash. Just because your dog "stays near" you does not mean they are trained. If they come across another dog, small animals (squirrels, cats, etc.) or large animals (Deer, Coyotes, Stray dogs) and aren't trained their pray drive may kick in and they are gone. If they encounter any of these it can result in serious injury.

Please excuse the quality as this is my first attempt at making and editing a video. Here is how I'm introducing the break command. With Mango she is a rescue and I've only had her a few weeks. Here I'm having her complete an easy command so I can reward her with the break command. Its important that you throw the reward to teach the dog it's ok to go away. I also make this as fun as she wants, you'll see she runs around and likes to play tug, so I let her win before getting the reward back and doing it again. The idea behind this is to be able to give the break command and let the dog release and be a dog without always producing a reward. For example if we just finished a training session and I give her break then she is free to run around and do what she wants until we either are done or I call her back.
