Klassic Tails Inn shares its top tips for keeping your dog safe and happy this Christmas, from the tempting but toxic seasonal foods to avoid, to how to help calm anxious fear.

ℂ𝕒𝕟 𝕕𝕠𝕘𝕤 𝕙𝕒𝕧𝕖 ℂ𝕙𝕣𝕚𝕤𝕥𝕞𝕒𝕤 𝕕𝕚𝕟𝕟𝕖𝕣?
In short, no!
All the salt and seasoning could seriously upset their stomachs, while cooked fat can cause inflammation and potentially acute pancreatitis, which is commonly seen by vets over the Christmas period.
Better safe than sorry, try a simple corn, pea and carrots mix vegetables, in moderation over their normal diet, whether kibble, canned or raw. To dress it up even more one tablespoon of pumpkin is always a hit and appreciated. Low sodium chicken broth is also a great alternative to gravy, packing a flavorful punch when drizzled over their meal.

𝕎𝕙𝕚𝕔𝕙 ℂ𝕙𝕣𝕚𝕤𝕥𝕞𝕒𝕤 𝕗𝕠𝕠𝕕 𝕚𝕤 𝕞𝕠𝕤𝕥 𝕥𝕠𝕩𝕚𝕔 𝕥𝕠 𝕕𝕠𝕘𝕤?
𝗖𝗵𝗼𝗰𝗼𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗲: Don't think about sharing your Milk Tray! Chocolate contains theobromine, which is highly toxic to dogs and especially potent in darker chocolate.
𝗥𝗮𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗻𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝘂𝗹𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗮𝘀: Watch out for these pesky dried fruits, found in many of our favourite festive treats, like mince pies, Christmas cake and Christmas pudding.
𝗢𝗻𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀: Lots of our own hearty winter recipes include onion but if consumed by dogs, it can cause severe gastrointestinal illness.
𝗖𝗼𝗼𝗸𝗲𝗱 𝗯𝗼𝗻𝗲𝘀: Cooking bones makes them brittle and likely to splinter, which can cause internal damage — raw bones, however, are safe to feed your dog this Christmas.

𝕋𝕠𝕡 𝕥𝕚𝕡𝕤 𝕗𝕠𝕣 𝕜𝕖𝕖𝕡𝕚𝕟𝕘 𝕪𝕠𝕦𝕣 𝕕𝕠𝕘 𝕤𝕒𝕗𝕖 𝕒𝕥 ℂ𝕙𝕣𝕚𝕤𝕥𝕞𝕒𝕤
While everyone deserves a little treat at Christmas, We recommends not deviating too much from your dogs' regular diet, being careful not to overfeed them. Some dogs relish the extra attention from visitors at Christmas but for pets that are more reserved, consider creating a quiet, safe space for them to retreat to. Remember that music, loud chatter and bangs from Christmas cheers could cause their anxiety to spike.
Try Raw bones and Peanut-butter filled Kongs are a great source of physical and mental stimulation for dogs, with chewing releasing endorphins that can help them calm down.
Keep Christmas decorations out of reach to save your dog from using your favourite Christmas decorations as a chew toy. Dogs are natural scavengers too, so be wary about leaving them unsupervised around the Christmas tree. If there are any foodie presents under there, you might find them opening it before you!

Finally, stick to routine as best you can. Lots of winter walks with longer walks on the day of household festivities will help to get your dog out of the house to relieve stress, be less anxious.

What is Klassic Tails Inn Shuttle service like? I will give you a little taste of what you could experience by trying yet another one of our convenient dog boarding services.

Wake Up
Rising early to meet the sun, you hop out of bed in the early morning anticipation of travel. There’s your little furry pal shaking his rump and looking up with playful intent. You’ve been looking forward to this mini vacation for some time now. Into the bathroom and turning the hot water handle of the shower you select the perfect temperature that slowly wakes and soothes your body. Next, you ceremoniously put on your favorite pair of jeans and shirt you laid out the night before. You can already smell the preprogrammed coffee maker doing what it does best. People often talk about the stress that the firework holidays (Independence Day, New Year’s Eve) can inflict on our dogs, but Halloween can also traumatize dogs, or cause them to go missing (all those open doors and distracted door-answerers!). Here are some tips to make sure your Halloween is a safe and happy day for your dog.

👻 Dog costumes

Many of us are amused by seeing a dog in a cute costume—and some dogs honestly love the extra attention they receive in a Halloween outfit. But if your dog gets growly or glum in his costume, take it off! Don’t force costumes on dogs ever! It’s not worth getting someone bitten over!

🎃 Human costumes

As funny as you might think it would be to film your dog’s reaction to you or your kid fully disguised in an elaborate costume, please don’t! Many dogs are terrified by Halloween costumes, and it’s just as likely that they will run away from you in fear as growl and perhaps even attack the scary intruder. If possible, let your dog see you getting dressed up and/or made up. Talk to them so they are sure to look at your face and see that it’s still you. Save putting on any masks for when you’ve left the house! Similarly don’t expect your pet too happily greet trick-or-treaters in full costumes. If she rolls with all the aliens, witches, ghosts and more, great. But if she’s even the slightest bit apprehensive, follow the tips in the next section to keep her (and the trick-or-treaters) safe and intact!

🍬Trick or treat! 🍭

Keep your dog confined. If you are going to be providing treats for trick-or-treaters, set up an “air lock” around your front door with an exercise pen, so your dog can’t approach (much less run out of) the front door when it’s open. Better yet, confine him to a part of the house where he can’t access the door area at all. If you have baby gates set up so that he can see what’s happening at the door, but can’t come to the door, that may be ideal.
Alternatively, consider setting up a trick-or-treating station in front of your home, on the porch or in the driveway. Grab some chairs and blankets and the candy bowl and sit outside for the peak of trick-or-treating traffic. That moves the noise and hubbub farther from the house, and eliminates the door opening and closing multiple times.
Of course, turning the lights off and NOT answering the door is a good option, too!
Given that there may be an unusual amount of traffic, noise, and strangers in your neighborhood, make sure your dog is wearing a collar with current identification. It’s always a good time to check the registration of your dog’s microchip, too, to make sure that the registry has your current contact information.

Above all: Keep candy out of reach!

Secure all candy • especially chocolates • well out of reach of your dog! Go beyond the middle of the dining room table or counter; think top-of-the-refrigerator or a high cabinet. Make sure your kids secure their candy stashes in a safe location, too. Hiding a bag of candy under their bed will not prevent your dog from finding and eating it, wrappers and all. Help your kids determine a dog-proof hiding spot for their sweet treasure.
