This is an original photo of Calumet Farm horses being unloaded from railroad cars as they arrive at Santa Anita for the 1949 Winter Racing Season.

Citation is the horse on the right.

Thirty horses were in the shipment.

In addition to Citation, there were:

Ponder, the 1949 Kentucky Derby winner;

Bewitch, the 1947 Champion Two Year Old Filly; and the 1949 Champion Handicap Mare; who was the only horse to defeat Citation as a two year old;

Wistful, the 1949 Co-Champion Three Year Old Filly;

Two Lea, the 1949 Co-Champion Three Year Old Filly and the 1950 Champion Handicap Mare, who was the dam: of Tim Tam, the 1958 Kentucky Derby winner; and of On-and-On, who factors in the dam line of the great sire Alydar.

Check out this mail carrier! In 1910, W.R. Day (also known as Buffalo Bill) raised these two moose, Pete and Nellie, and then broke them to drive his mail cart. He would transport mail and supplies to Edmonton and St. Albert from as far away as Wabasca. This is a photo by J.H. Gano of Mr. Day and his two-wheeled cart in 1911.

The lighter penguin is an elderly female whose partner died this year. The darker one is a younger male who lost his partner two years ago. Biologists have followed them as they meet every night to comfort each other. They stand for hours together watching the lights. Photographer Tobias Baumgaertner captured this image of two widowed fairy penguins looking over the Melbourne skyline. It has won an award in Oceanographic magazine’s Ocean Photography Awards 2020.
