With what I’ve been seeing in the community recently, This needs to be shared! Don’t own a horse if you’re unwilling to provide proper maintenance, care and injections! I don’t care who you are. Don’t run them through pain. They are our partners in the arena and we need to treat them accordingly.

Maintenance, maintenance, maintenance
Do I need to say it again?
Horses put their bodies through hell to do the things we ask them to do.
As a general rule the higher caliber the horse the more maintenance they will require. Why is this? Because they are exerting themselves that much harder. For every half second you shave off your runs you are adding significant wear and tear to your horses body. We expect these horses to go out and preform miracles over and over again and a lot of the time in less than ideal ground. So maintaining them should be at the top of your priority list! Don’t wait until they are showing signs of something being wrong before you get them checked out. Don’t wait until they are injured and have to have months or years off to recover. Staying up on regular maintenance can buy you years of success with a horse. Be proactive!
Also DON’T OWN A BARREL HORSE IF YOU ARE UNABLE TO MAINTAIN IT!
barrel horses literally go out and tear themselves up every run they make. Even though breeding has progressed so much over the last few years to produce horses that are designed to “run barrels” horses in general are not made to do this job. Superior breeding has produced horses that are faster and more athletic, but the faster they run the more strain they put on their bodies. Thankfully VET care has also progressed significantly over the years. We now have so many resources available to help our equine athletes compete comfortably at a high level. It is your responsibility to utilize these resources. It takes a lot of TIME and MONEY to maintain a barrel horse. If you can’t make the commitment don’t take one on.

“Mares aren’t always well liked and for the same reasons strong women aren’t.

Opinionated? Those opinions are not without good cause and maybe you can't figure them out or maybe you just don’t like her opinion of you. Change it and she will always be on your side.

Stubborn? She just won’t let you bulldoze her. Treat her with respect and her resilience will be an asset to you.

Difficult? You just can’t handle her. You don’t have what it takes.

Stick with geldings then, and leave the mare for someone who understands her and appreciates the same qualities society has subtlety taught you not to like.

Here’s to mares, to strong women, and to those who CAN and DO appreciate them!”

You have to be willing to lose in order to win.

I know this mentality is a hard one to grasp―or at least, it was for me.

In the early years of my training career, I was striving for perfection, not progress.

I never wanted to experience failure.

But wasn’t long before I figured out that failure is what allows me to experience success.

Without failure, there is no opportunity to learn.

You have to let yourself make mistakes in order to get better.

You have to let your horses make mistakes in order for them to learn.

Mistakes are lessons that pave the path to greatness.

Without those lessons, we stay in the same place we are today.

Give yourself the opportunity to fail, and remember that by doing so, you are setting yourself up for opportunities to learn, grow, and progress beyond your current circumstances.

Got a nice grass/alfalfa mix back in the pasture! Bout 1200lbs of hay and The ponies are loving it. We will be having a new boarding addition in the barn beginning of October so we’re trying out 2 round bales at a time so every horse can munch as much as they want.

Don’t forget your why.

We unconditionally commit ourselves to this sport. We sacrifice enormous parts of our lives, and ourselves because we are so passionate about what we love.

But whilst we work, grind and graft to become the best riders and owners we believe our horses deserve, we sometimes forget the most important thing...we forget why.

Why we get up at 3am for a competitions, why we forgo new clothes so our horses can have special shoes, why we get up 2 hours earlier than “normal people” because stables don’t clean themselves, why we invest our hard earned money in saddles, entry fees, supplements and rugs.

We do it because once upon a time, a little kid fell in love with a horse and never looked back.

We do it because these animals bring us incomparable happiness.

They lift us up from the darkest of places and they give us a reason to get out of bed.

They push us, challenge us and shape us into better people by teaching us lessons we’d never learn anywhere else.

They unlock a whole part of us that we never knew existed. A stubborn, determined, strong willed part that refuses to give up.

They keep us grounded, reminding us that sometimes even though certain things may be out of our control, our own actions and emotions never are.

They make us laugh, when we don’t even feel like smiling. They are like warm soup for the soul, they fill our hearts without even trying.

So next time you're in the saddle, just take a moment. Breathe, smile, laugh... and don’t forget why.

I feel like I hear this phrase a lot:

——

“My horse doesn’t like that.”

——

How do you know your horse doesn’t like it?

Before giving up completely or giving up on a particular horse ask yourself a few questions.

💥Does my horse know how to do this properly?
💥Am I teaching my horse how to do this properly?
💥Have I asked someone who is successful in the discipline I am competing in for help?
💥Have I checked with my vet to see if my horse is in some sort of pain that makes them not enjoy doing this?

——

“My horse doesn’t like to collect.”

💥Does he/she not like it or do they just not know how?

“My horse doesn’t like such and such equipment.”

💥Do you know how to use it properly? Did you introduce it to them properly?

“My horse just hates barrel racing.”

💥Is your horse not broke enough and doesn’t know how to use its body properly so it can’t perform correctly?

💥Is your horse in pain and unable to enjoy its job because of it?

——

I understand that some horses really just don’t like a particular discipline but I bet 90% of the time a lot of things can be fixed with knowledge or vet work.

I see so many people get frustrated and want to quit because they feel helpless and in their mind they are thinking they have tried everything…but if your answer is NO to ANY of these questions above…It’s not time to give up. It’s time to step back and gain knowledge.

Reasons why horses blow up:

1) soundness or soreness

There is no better way to make one hate their job than to work them when they are sore or unsound. They are professional athletes treat them according.

2) going fast before they are ready

Expecting more from a horse is ok but be fair and use moderation. Just because you like going fast doesn’t always mean it’s in the best interest of your horse.

3) lack of foundational training

Foundation is everything. Foundation is what we have to have when things fall apart temporarily. The colter starter and the early pattern work on a young horse are the key to long term success.

4) not doing enough slow work between runs

Just because it’s a winner or it’s been ran for a year or more does not mean we skip the slow work to keep the horse correct. You have to do the homework during the week to have success at the race.
