M**faletta was found as a stray who could barely walk, yet she limped up to a stranger and gently leaned her head against her leg.

Her finder brought her inside because the neighbors were threatening to shoot her. After a week of food and water she improved a little, but she clearly needed more help than they could give, so they reached out for help.

Yesterday our vet discovered the cause of her limp. M**faletta’s femur is broken because someone shot her, and the bullet fragments are still inside her leg. She has been surviving like this with no treatment, along with an infected ear, intestinal parasites, heartworms, and a dewclaw that had grown into her toe pad.

An orthopedic specialist reviewed her X-rays and determined that her leg cannot be saved. She has been hobbling in pain on this broken leg for months. Because the injury is so old the bone is no longer repairable, amputation is the only reasonable option.

Even after all of this pain and betrayal, M**faletta is gentle and trusting with everyone she meets.

Today is Giving Tuesday, and M**faletta is our focus. Her care, including her upcoming amputation, will cost at least $2500. Your donation helps her finally heal and live without pain.

We heard about this sweet girl found as a stray with a broken leg. She’s also got heartworms and a badly infected ear. She’s got no microchip, and no collar. We want to scoop her up but she will need a medical foster. We’re calling her M**faletta… or M**fie. We’ll take care of her medical expenses if someone can foster.

Today we had to make the unbearably hard decision to let sweet Martha go. Even with every effort from our veterinary team, her breathing kept declining and her tiny body was so tired. We could not let her struggle any longer. We know so many of you loved her too, and we’re so sorry to share this heartbreaking news.

Her life was short, just 5 months, but we were grateful for the opportunity to show her a life filled with love, safety, snuggles, and playtime. From being sold outside of a bar with zero vet care to becoming the darling of the rescue, beloved on social media, and the most expensively vetted puppy we have ever saved, we cherished and were impressed by her every step of the way. We hope that brings some comfort in this grief.

To honor our precious little fighter, we are creating Martha’s Legacy Fund, which will help provide urgent and emergency veterinary care for the most vulnerable animals who come through our rescue. Her tiny life made a huge impact on us, and through this fund, her legacy will continue to save others who need the same chance at love and safety.
