I have done some hard cuts on my silkies.
While the silkie market is flooded with pet quality silkies from farm stores and hatcheries and those that are new to the silkie breed take some time to learn more, I feel this is the perfect time to better the quality in my flock further.
With that being said I’ve been hatching some of the most adorable paints that I’ve ever seen. Look at this little and the spots this little chick hatched with.

Recently I’ve seen a surge in Silkie prices. Not only from big name breeders but those purchasing from farm stores/hatcheries as well.
It makes me ever so grateful that I started my Silkie addiction almost a decade ago. On the other hand it makes me incredibly sad for those that may not ever get their hands on such quality to enjoy due to greediness in the world today.
I can honestly say I’ve hatched silkies from some of these bigger names just to give them away free to pet homes or cull due to having a single comb (silkies should have walnut combs).
I personally hatch for myself, to better the breed and better my stock. Not often letting go of any until I feel secure with my keepers.
I am also not afraid to cull.
The cost for raising silkies and breeding them to SOP, keeping them healthy, happy, showing them, feeding them, supplementing them and upgrading is a pretty big price tag. However, I still can not see the justification for the numbers i am seeing lately. Especially when selling in mass quantities or constantly running waffles.
I have been told “people will pay it so why not”.
I understand that my prices are higher then people in my area wish them to be but compared to what I’m seeing, mine are sold at a steal.
I suppose my old heart is just too soft for todays market and I could not justify asking the prices I’m seeing.

We’re pretty excited to see how our silkies place at the Missouri State Fair.
But one thing is guaranteed… There will be some very nice poultry at the show to view.

We had a lot of fun showing at the Northeast District Expo yesterday!

It was our first show. We signed up last minute and had zero conditioning time but our though process is always to just jump straight in and learn from there.

Her crest is maybe too large for this show and she didn’t like having to show on a table but in a show cage where she is comfortable and the large crest is gold major shows are exactly her lane)

I just can’t pass by my pens anymore without admiring all of the fluff!
My son and husband passed by at separate times and I hear “oh wow, look at that chicken!” While pointing to different silkies. It was at this moment that my heart thumped to a new beat. They finally get it, they finally understand my passion and love for these amazingly fluffy silkies of mine.

Hey y’all ! Thank you for following my page and enjoying my passion with me. It has been hard trying to shuffle between my personal page and two farm pages along with daily life. Most of my post are over on my Steel Rain Acres page instead of this one as that’s the page I’ve had for a couple years and it just makes it easier to bunch it all together.
