Cooperative Care: Bathing, Pt. 7
Today you guys meet Kai!
Introducing a new dog teaches us how to individualize the bathing experience. Kai is very different than my normal helper Creed. She is much bolder, and she is not afraid of water. So my approach is similar, but a little bit faster with her.
The discussion topics from today are:
Importance of Water Temperature!
Keep the water comfortable for your dog, not scalding and not ice cold. Our water here at Patriot Pet Supply can take some time to heat up so keep that in mind. You wouldn’t want a cold or scalding shower and neither does your pet. 👏
Ending On a Good Note!
My little helper Kai is very eager to learn, but quitting while we’re ahead is still crucial. Even with an easy dog keep your training sessions short and sweet. ❤️

Cooperative Care: Bathing Your Pet, Pt. 6
Training Treats: @frommfamily Crunchy O’s Bacon Blasters. Sold in store 🫶
In today’s tutorial we talked about:
Acclimating your pet to water being closer to them.
Training known behaviors on a wet surface.
Introducing water on your hands to your pet.
Introducing Water:
Tip: When introducing water closer to your pet, if they move away, move the water away from them as well.
You want to get the water as close as you can without making your pet feel nervous enough to create more space between them and the water. What we do want is for your pet to understand that the water being close means REWARDS!
The sequence I use is: Water moves closer. I stop moving right before Creed feels the need to move. Reward, and back the water away from him. Repeat.
Training on wet surface:
Go slow, they may not be as quick or as accurate with their cues as normal. Be clear and reward for their effort. Make it fun!
Water on your hands:
Don’t shock your pet. In the video I let Creed see/smell that my hands are wet before touching him. Pet them how y normally enjoy being pet. This may not be a big deal for your pet, and that’s wonderful!
🚨Disclaimer: Your pet is an individual. What works for me and my animals may not work for yours. We will do our best to provide you with ideas and resources for your best shot at success!

Cooperative Care Tips: Bathing Your Pet, Pt. 5
Today’s focus will be on slowly introducing water to the same tub your pet is in.
Our training treat today is @frommfamily Crunchy O’s, Bacon Blaster flavor. We carry these in the store if you’d like to try them yourself!
Step 1: Use all our previous tutorials to get your pet into the tub in a stress free manor.
Step 2: Slowly turn the water on, point the nozzle at the floor. The nozzle should be as far from your pet as possible. Allow your pet to acclimate to the sight, and sound of the water running.
Step 3: Reward your pet well and often for remaining in the tub on their own. I prefer to train these skills unrestrained so that if they become uncomfortable they can “opt out”.
Step 4: Watch for signs that your pet is uncomfortable or distressed. A LITTLE bit of stress is okay, but we want to make this as positive as possible. (Examples: moving around a little bit, small infrequent lip licks)
*If your pet shows signs of distress, make it easier!Do something they were successful with before. Example: your pet could stay in the tub while you sprayed water in other tub, so you go back to doing that.*
Step 5: Work on building your pets confidence by slowly moving the nozzle around. Point it in different directions, still avoiding actually getting them wet unless they allow it.
Step 6: Quit while you’re ahead. Make some good progress. Build you and your pets confidence and quit! Quality over duration.
Now go have some fun with your pet!

Today we’re going to talk about decompression walks. One of my favorite things to do with my dogs.
The focus of a decompression walk is not training. It is simply decompression, emotional regulation, exercise, and bonding.
Things you need: Collar/harness with tags, long lead 20/30ft, and training treats for when your dog checks in with you.
Unfortunately a lot of our domestic animals live much more stressful lives than we may realize. Decompressing with our pets is wonderful for their mental health and ours too. Sniffing releases endorphins for your pets, allowing them to better regulate their own emotions.
Humans are an incredibly fast paced species. Allowing both yourself and your pet to explore the world at the pace they set will benefit both parties greatly.
For animals that struggle with a solid recall, I recommend getting a 20-30 foot long lead. This allows them more freedom of movement while still having a secure hold for their safety and the safety of others.
I always bring training treats with me on decompression walks to reward my dogs when they choose to check in with me. These training treats need to be valuable to your dog. Big effort = big payout. Choosing you over their environment is a big deal!
My favorite places for decompression walks are any natural areas with a low population of people and other pets. The focus of a decompression walk is not training, simply bonding and decompression. So the less distractions and stressors for you and your pet the better!
Some recommendations in the area:
@sniffspots
•Warwick Park
• Hibernia Park
• St. Peter’s Trails
• *With permission* privately owned woods and fields
I recommend going at the least popular times. Early morning and later in the evening before closing usually work best for me.

Enrichment Tutorial: Letting Your Dog Be a Dog
Today’s enrichment tutorial may just be the simplest. Yet it is one of the most overlooked.
So many times as humans we forget that our animals aren’t also human. They don’t love the same things we do. As caregivers it is our responsibility to find what makes our pets “tick”.
What do they love the most?
What fulfills them in mind and body?
Some examples are tracking, hunting, digging, chasing, sniffing, tugging, and, herding.
With purpose bred dogs it may be simple to know what drives them, for other dogs maybe not so much.
Have fun getting to know what your dog loves most, and strengthening your bond by doing their favorite activities WITH them.
Good luck, and have fun!

Cooperative Care: Bathing, Part 4
Today we are talking about noise desensitization, specifically to faucets/running water.
This will be more of a discussion. This is because this will be based off of what your pet can handle.
Food is a really good way to determine if your dog is genuinely comfortable with something. Most dogs will stop eating when they are stressed.
In the video you can see when I turn the water on Creed stops eating and looks up to check it out, then he goes back to eating. This tells me that he is OK to continue.
If he would have been unable to return to eating here is some of the things I would have tried to make him feel safer.
1. Hand feed high value treats, while the water is running. Hand feeding can make scary situations easier for some dogs.
2. Having the dog loose in the bathing area while the water is running. Allowing more freedom to move can give them more control over how close to the scary faucet they can comfortably be.
3. Playing in the grooming area while the faucet runs. Some dogs find play more relaxing and rewarding than food.
4. Slowing down and going back to something easier, for example turn the faucet off and just play with your dog in the bathing area and tub. Build super positive feelings towards the bathing area, before trying to add another scary thing (the faucet running) back in again.
These are just examples of what may work for your pet. Cooperative Care needs to be catered to the individual animal, and their tolerance and fear levels.
Good luck!

Enrichment Tutorial: Snuffle Blanket
Step 1: Grab a blanket, or towel that you don’t mind your dog using. Lay the blanket or towel out flat on the floor.
Step 2: Take your dogs kibble and place small handfuls on the blanket and fold the blanket to hide the kibble. Repeat this step until you are out of kibble.
Tip: Make some of the kibble easy to access and some more difficult. You want your dog to access enough food to keep sniffing!
Match the difficulty level of the blanket snuffle to your dog’s motivation and intelligence. The goal is some fun sniffing and problem solving for your dog.
Get sniffin’!

Enrichment Tutorial: Nesting Bowls
Step 1: Get some plastic stacking bowls.
I use my mixing bowls, but if you’re concerned about germs, you could find some cheap stacking bowls at local thrift stores. I like plastic bowls because they are light and to avoid the chance of breakage.
Step 2: Use your dog’s kibble, or treats.
I prefer using my dog’s daily kibble for this puzzle bowl.
Step 3: Fill your bowls
Fill the bowls with your kibble and/or treats. Stack the bowls. I like to fill the top bowl to allow your dog to “win” right off the bat to build some motivation for the puzzle.
Step 4: Let your dog do the rest.
If this puzzle is to difficult for your dog I recommend taking a break and either using a more high value food (stinkier, or with more moisture) or making the puzzle easier to build their confidence in themselves.

Cooperative Care: Bathing, Part 3
When training something scary with your pet keep it short and sweet.
Make your routine trips to our store an excuse to do a short training sessions with your pet!
Bring their favorite toy or treat and take 5 minutes to build those positive associations with our bathing station.
You can see in this tutorial that our shop dog Creed has gotten quite comfortable in the bathing area. This is due to multiple short, fun training sessions when he comes to work with our employee Justine.
Training cooperative care, or in general doesn’t have to be miserable for you and your pet. Learning is supposed to be fun 😉

Gear tutorial!
Today’s Tutorial shows how to use @goo_eez dog boots on your dog.
Step 1: Guesstimate Sizing
Measure your dog’s paws or give a best guess to their size. Use steps 2-4 below to ensure correct sizing when purchasing.
Step 2: Prepare the boot to put on your dog.
• Unpackage the boot, KEEP THE CONTAINER (this part is important).
• Place just tip of the boot into the container.
• Roll the upper portion of the boot (the sleeve) down on the outside of the container. Keep rolling the sleeve down until there is only a small pocket left to place your pet’s paw in.
Step 3: Putting the boot on your pet.
• Place your pets toes into the pocket you’ve created by rolling the boot sleeve down. Make sure their toes are aligned comfortably.
• Slowly allow the sleeve of the boot to roll up your dog’s leg. Do your best not to allow the boot to snap your dog when it comes off the container.
Step 4: Check Sizing and Adjust
Make sure the boot is on straight and that your pets paw is not caught ESPECIALLY their dew claws. If you cannot comfortably fit a finger between the sleeve and their leg try the next size up.
Step 5: Acclimating your pet to the boots.
Take it slow and reward your pet often for their effort. When teaching this to Creed I put one boot on at a time and let him become comfortable with one at a time. I encouraged him to walk with treats and rewarded him for taking ANY steps. After a few minutes they usually get used to the feeling and aren’t as anxious. Once they become comfortable repeat the steps for all the other boots one at a time.
*not all pets will react the same, if you need more assistance please contact us and we will help to the best of our ability*
It’s wintertime, with that comes cold little toes and salt everywhere. Rock salt will dehydrate your dog’s paws when it comes in contact with their skin, it can also sometimes be mixed with chemicals that can be harmful for our pets.
Avoid the discomfo
