Did you know horses will loose 24 teeth between 2 1/2 and 4 1/2 years old?
Babies will get sharp enamel points that can cause havoc on soft tissue. Checking and floating babies every six months will help ensure your training program stays on track.
A few dental issues that can manifest in young horses are; retained caps as shown in these pictures, ulcers in soft tissues from sharp teeth, wolf teeth and periodontal disease from feed being trapped around caps.
Signs your horse may have an issue: tilting their head while eating or riding, blood, odor from the mouth, not wanting to move or bend right or left, not eating as vigorously and irritation while carrying a bit.
Remember not every horse will present with signs of an issue.

The boys were so excited that I won a tent at a horse show. Of course they wanted to sleep outside last night but we had big thunderclouds building in the distance. I sent them upstairs to get ready for bed and to make their bed as they needed to put new sheets on their bed. Once they completed the task of making their bed and putting new pillow cases on pillows I asked them to pick their favorite pillow and go downstairs. They were so excited to get to sleep in the tent! Even the biggest kid never made it to bed last night 😂

Horses start loosing deciduous (baby) teeth at 2 1/2 years old. And between ages 2 1/2 and 4 1/2 they will loose 24 teeth. There is a lot of growth and development happening in these early stages. As owners we can help youngsters out by having bi-annual dentals done. Please feel free to call or text with any questions. 208-830-3075

Findings from today.
I had a few of these cases today and am greatful to the owners who allowed me to help.
When we talk about ulcerated cheeks from sharp points on teeth this is what we are talking about.

Third picture is a picture of a little gelding that came in from an over aggressive dental. 1/3 of the horses Occlusal surface (Grinding surface) was removed by an uneducated human 😢 the fourth picture with the lines is where the horse should still have tooth.
