We are a public animal shelter that serves the animals and residents within the city limits of Emporia, Virginia. We are a 501(c)3 Organization
For all animals that come into the shelter they will be held for a stray hold period of:
7 days WITH NO COLLAR
10 days WITH COLLAR
After the stray hold period the animal will then belong to the City of Emporia per Code of Virginia, Code 3.2-6546 subdivis
ion 1 through 5 subsection D. For animals returned to their owners there will be a $10 impound fee and $5 PER day that the animal resides at the shelter. In order to claim your animals you MUST provide some sort of proof that you are the owner. Documentation must match your name and address on your ID Card. Types of proof we accept are:
-Rabies Certificate
-City Dog License
-Vet Bills
In the City of Emporia you must obtain a dog license every year between January 1st- January 31st. The dog license's can be purchased at the City of Emporia Treasurer's office. You can only obtain the license with proof of rabies vaccination. The City of Emporia only allows you to have 3 dogs on your property at one time. This handsome boy was picked up by an officer on Market Drive. If he belongs to you, he is at our animal shelter located at 1921 Sunnyside Road. He is doing great but is ready to return home. Please remember that in order to reclaim him, you must show proof that he belongs to you such as vet records, a rabies certificate, or photos. If not reclaimed by January 18, 2024, he will be available for adoption or rescue. Thanks.

Iggy is a black and tan shepherd mix about 10 months of age. She will be best suited in a home without small children but has been around other dogs.
Coco is a brindle and gray Pitbull and is estimated to be around 3 years of age. She has been around other dogs and large groups of people and did very well. She has been in the shelter the longest and is desperately looking for her forever home. Thank you!

"April" is a gray and white Pitbull, who is estimated to be around 4 years of age. She is very sweet and enjoys going on walks. She can be a little strong on the leash but is learning.
"Coco" is a gray and brindle Pitbull who has been here at the shelter the longest and is so desperately seeking her forever home. She is good on the leash and gets along well with the other dogs here at the shelter. She has also been around lots of people and did very well. She will best be suited in a home without small children as she can be a little strong. She will need to be placed in a home without cats. When you approach her kennel, it takes her a few moments to warm up to you but once you take her out of her kennel, she's is so sweet and happy to greet you.

I want to take this time to thank the YMCA of Emporia, VA for their generous donations to the Emporia Animal Shelter. Elvira is a 9-month-old Great Dane who is missing from her home off of Douglas Road, Emporia VA. She went missing from her back yard, inside of her fence. The owner came home to the gate open is very concerned about her. This boy is missing, and his owner is worried about him. He was last seen off of Dry Bread Road in his yard near Newsome's Store, located in Greensville County. The shelter staff received this beautiful plaque in the mail this week from Best Friends Network, for being classified as a No Kill Shelter for 2022.
