Dedicated to the San Diego community since 1960, Rancho Coastal Humane Society (RCHS) was founded by animal lover Maria K. Lloyd who purchased property off a small dirt road in Encinitas, California. At that time the shelter was home to dogs, cats, birds, goats, sheep and even a b***o named Milton. Today, that dirt road is the I-5, but the shelter still resides in the small yellow house where Lloy
d once lived. RCHS is known for its personalized pet adoption process and humane education. We’re also recognized for programs and services that strengthen the human-animal bond, including the Animal Safehouse Program, pet food banks and community outreach that all provide a “helping paw” to people in crisis. At RCHS we believe everyone should be able to keep their beloved pets safe, healthy and by their sides. We have no government contracts and are supported only by individual donors, grants and foundations, and our Thrift Shop. Based on statistical reporting through the national database, Shelter Animals Count, RCHS currently maintains a 100% Live Release or Save Rate. This refers to the percentage of animals leaving the shelter either through adoption, transfer or return to owner. Part of the San Diego Animal Welfare Coalition, RCHS abides by the pledge that NO healthy, treatable animal will ever be euthanized for time or space. Our shelter stands with the Coalition and abides by the Asilomar Accord when it comes to serving this community and its animals!
We have the best neighbors! Huge thanks to Encinitas Ranch Golf Course, who recently hosted a raffle and raised $1,200 to benefit the animals in our care. We couldn't do what we do without the support of our local businesses!

Community Spotlight Adoption: RCHS would like to extend a helping paw to Izzy. Izzy is with another rescue and they are urgently looking for an adopter or foster. "This chunky house potato just adores her kids, dogs, kitties and even birdies! Just over 4 years old, Izzy is a family’s dream doggy! Izzy is a gentle girl, and so very playful. She is as content to snooze at your feet as much as frolic in the backyard with her doggy and human friends."

Look at this philanthropy in action!! Tomorrow is San Diego Gives Day, and it seems fitting to give a big shout-out to of . These teen girls gathered for a pajama party meeting to discuss philanthropy and various skills that will help the girls grow their confidence and leadership abilities. They had approximately 100 ladies in attendance, nearly all of whom got a moment to greet some of our Pet Assisted Therapy dogs. They also held a donation drive which resulted in several toys, cat litter, and over 180 cans of wet food for the RCHS cats and dogs! We are so impressed with the work NCL is doing and cannot thank them enough for their support of RCHS!

We love hearing from our adopters. And when we got an update from Walter's parents, who adopted 1 year ago, we just had to share! "Walter is a hilariously playful, yet lazy, an amazing kitty, and has become a great addition to my family. He is doing awesome and is loved by everyone. He loves to race around the house and jump around and play with his many many toys, and is probably the most active couch potatoes I know of! One of his favorite pastimes is to hop from place to place around the house looking for the perfect spot to snooze. He also has taken a great liking to a large rolled up carpet in our living room, and loves to pounce all over it when he is feeling frisky. He somehow has an endless supply of energy when playing while also balancing most of the day sleeping peacefully."

Here’s Miss Winnie, our RCHS Pet of the Week. A man in Orange County found this tiny, 6-pound cat in the shed in his back yard, along with her litter of 6 kittens. He took them to a shelter, but they weren’t equipped to care for a mommy and her newborns, so the little family was transferred to RCHS through our FOCAS program.
Now Winnie is ready to begin her new life in her forever home. Thank you for spreading her story and helping us find her new family!
Happy Tales on this Throwback Thursday! Louie (formerly Ploobee) was adopted in May, and is living the dream with his new dad!
Louie had impacted undercoat mats, and after meeting with several groomers, it was decided that shaving him down was the best option. Louie’s dad said, “It was an awkward few weeks of applying Sun Tan Lotion before each walk and answering questions from neighbors, but his coat has been growing in quite fast and he's back to being a fuzzy friend… All-in-all, Louie has been a dream. So calm and friendly, truly a delight! My parents have just arrived in San Diego to visit and are meeting him for the first time”.

We recently did a home visit with one of our alumni, Louie (AKA Sir), after he celebrated his one-year “adoptaversary”. Before adopting Louie in 2023, Louie’s family had rescued two other hard-to-place dogs from us starting with Thing (AKA Thing One) in 2020 and returning for Luna (AKA Espy) in 2021. We got to revisit their adoption stories and get some advice for future adopters. Here’s what they had to say!
