Reminder: We Will Be Closed Friday for the 4th of July! πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ

Just a heads-up that our office will be closed this Friday, July 4th, in celebration of Independence Day. We’ll be back to regular hours on Monday, July 7th.

We hope you have a safe and fun holiday!

The 4th of July is a fun time for us, but it can be stressful for our pets due to the loud fireworks and crowds. If your pet experiences anxiety now is the time to pick up your medications if needed and here are a few precautions you can take to help them feel safe and secure:

Create a Safe Space: Set up a quiet, comfortable area in your home away from the noise, with their bed, toys, and a cozy blanket. Consider using a crate if they feel safe in one.

Close the Windows: This helps muffle the sound of fireworks and keeps the bright flashes of light at bay.

Use Calming Products: There are various products like anxiety wraps (e.g., ThunderShirt), pheromone diffusers, or calming music to help soothe your pet.

Pick Up Medications: If your vet has recommended any calming medications for your pet, make sure to pick them up ahead of time. These can help take the edge off their anxiety during the fireworks.

Keep Them Inside: Don’t leave your pets outside, especially when fireworks are going off. They might try to escape in fear, and it’s safer to keep them indoors.

Distraction & Comfort: Play calming music or a favorite TV show to help distract them. Stay with your pet if they seem scared, offering gentle reassurance.

By taking these precautions, you can help your furry friends feel more at ease during the holiday and keep them safe!

While heartworm disease is not strictly seasonal, summer is often considered the peak season for heartworm transmission due to increased mosquito activity. Mosquitoes, which carry heartworm larvae, thrive in warmer temperatures. Year-round prevention is crucial to protect pets, as heartworm disease can occur even when mosquitoes are less active.

Summer is almost here, and while we’re all enjoying the sunshine, our pets might be struggling with the heat. Pets can suffer from the extreme temperatures just like we do, and in some cases, they can be more vulnerable. Whether you have a dog, cat, rabbit, or even a hamster, keeping your furry friend cool and comfortable is essential for their well-being.

Here are some simple but effective tips to help your pets stay cool when the temperature rises:
1. Hydration is a Must

Just like us, pets need plenty of water to stay hydrated, especially when it’s hot outside. Always ensure that your pet has access to fresh, cool water throughout the day. If your pet enjoys ice cubes, throw a few in their water bowl to keep it colder for longer. Dehydration can happen quickly in hot weather, so make sure your pet is drinking regularly.
2. Shade is Your Best Friend

Whether your pet is lounging outside or just taking a break, make sure they have access to plenty of shade. If they’re outside, set up a shaded area with a canopy, umbrella, or tree to give them relief from the direct sun. Inside, keep windows open for ventilation or turn on fans to circulate the air and keep the environment cooler.
3. Limit Exercise and Outdoor Time

Exercise is important for your pet, but during hot days, it’s best to limit strenuous outdoor activities. Take walks during cooler parts of the day, like early mornings or late evenings, when the ground is not as hot and the air is cooler. If your pet loves playing outside, keep sessions brief and always be mindful of the temperature.
4. Cooling Mats and Vests

If your pet is struggling with the heat, cooling mats or vests can be a great investment. These products help regulate your pet’s body temperature, providing relief during the hottest part of the day. Simply place the cooling mat in their favorite spot, or put the vest on before outdoor activities.
5. Grooming: Keep it Fresh

While you might be tempted to shave your pet down to the skin in the heat, that might not be the best choice. For many pets, particularly dogs with thick fur, their coat acts as a natural insulator, helping to regulate body temperature. Instead of shaving, try trimming their hair and brushing out tangles to help them stay cool while still offering some protection from the sun.
6. Avoid Hot Pavement

Hot pavement can burn your pet’s paws in seconds. To check if the ground is too hot for walks, place your hand on the pavement for a few secondsβ€”if it’s too hot for you, it’s definitely too hot for your pet. Stick to grass or dirt paths, or walk during cooler times of the day.
7. Never Leave Pets in the Car

This one is non-negotiable: NEVER leave your pet in the car during hot weather, even if you think you’ll only be gone for a minute. The temperature inside a car can rise dangerously fast, leading to heat stroke, organ failure, or even death. If you need to run errands, leave your pet at home where they’ll be safer.
8. Fun Frozen Treats

Cool your pet off with a delicious frozen treat! For dogs, try freezing low-sodium broth in an ice cube tray or make DIY frozen snacks with yogurt and fruit. Cats can also enjoy frozen ice cubes made from tuna juice or water with bits of their favorite treats inside. Just make sure any treats you give them are safe and appropriate for their diet.
9. Air Conditioning and Fans

If you’re lucky enough to have air conditioning, be sure to keep it on for your pets during the hottest days. If you don’t, fans can help create airflow in the house and keep temperatures down. If your pets are staying indoors, make sure the house stays as cool as possible by closing blinds during the hottest part of the day and keeping windows open for cross-ventilation.
10. Know the Signs of Heat Stroke

Heat stroke is a serious condition that can occur when your pet’s body becomes overheated. The signs of heat stroke in pets include heavy panting, excessive drooling, rapid breathing, weakness, vomiting, or collapse. If you suspect heat stroke, immediately move your pet to a cooler environment, offer them water, and contact your vet right away.

By keeping these simple tips in mind, you can help ensure your pets stay cool, hydrated, and comfortable all summer long. Always keep a watchful eye on your furry friend, especially during extreme heat, and make adjustments to their routine to keep them safe. Stay cool, and let your pets enjoy the sunny days ahead! 🌞
