We made it home last night! Poor girl looks like she’s been in the hospital for the past two days 😣. But she ate her mash last night and this morning ate her food and munching on her first hay she’s had in 3 days! We are still keeping a close eye! Our amazing vet thinks she may have been trying to have a compaction colic which would have been way worse, but we caught it quickly! I know I preach listen to your horse, even when you’re riding. This is why! It’s so important to listen!

We rushed our girl to the vet last night for gas colic. She stayed the night and I’m happy to report after getting gas off her stomach and putting some mineral oil in, she seems to be doing well! If she tolerates her mash this morning she will get to come home this afternoon!!!

🔥sarge update

1/3 of his right nasal passage is completely blocked by tumorous masses. He has no air flow. We are assuming they are carcinomas (cancer) but chose not to biopsy as the knowledge would not change the outcome. Cutting it out woluld be very painful on him due to the location, and he has PPID (cushings) so he is likely to get an infection which would make everything worse, not better. There are also lots of blood vessels where the masses are located increasing the probability of him bleeding out if we were to try to remove.

With this said, he’s getting all the oxygen he needs from his left nostril! If the masses invade the left side, we will have bigger issues, clearly.

We believe the overheating and breathing issues he had last summer were due to the PPID and his inability to sweat. But it appears his meds have been working as we have seen some sweating from him this year! Yay!

Here are our next steps

1) body clip when it gets a little warmer (I’m planning on doing this at our spring break camp!) if you’d like info about this let me know

2) monitor monitor breathing during light duty lessons only (which the kiddos know we already do!)

3) potentially swap to a more aggressive medication during his hard summer months and potentially do an asthma culture if we are still having breathing issues and sweating when we get warmer (sarge has had no issues this winter in the cold. Unfortunately I can’t ship him to live in Antarctica 😅)

4) if we are still struggling we can put in a trach (breathing tube in his neck) but again, with his PPID we worry about infection of that and it gives him other potential issues

We are just about ready for the cold!!! Tomorrow is Presidents’ Day and I know several of my kiddos are out of school!

If you ride Tuesday - Thursday this week, and would like to come tomorrow, I am planning on filling up tomorrow’s schedule!

With this said, if your kiddo wants to hang out or if you need to drop them off to ride and pick them up a couple hours later, you are welcome to do so. I will be putting them to work 🤭. So please make sure they know they will be working if they aren’t riding, helping me with the finishing touches for the cold!

The arena isn’t bad either! It’s cooler, less insulation and heat but we do have a heater and when our kiddos start riding they warm up fast!!!

It might be snowing outside but it’s nice in the arena! The most peaceful night ever!

You know it’s hot when the boys walk in

Hoochy we are so proud of you. You can tell by Liz’s massive smile! Liz has been helping me and learning about colt starting. Hooch has been a special case 😅. He requires a much slower approach, but look!!!! Here’s a clip of our first ride!!! You can tell how excited Liz was for the reward after hard work! Sometimes slow and steady wins the race!
