Every year we hold a snake-proofing clinic. Micky Bush from Brownwood brings down live snakes and helps us train dogs to avoid snakes based on sight, smell, and sound. This training has proven effective and saved many dogs and owners from crossing paths with dangerous snakes in the field. This is not only for hunters. If the dog goes to parks with bodies of water, or even out to the ranch for a relaxing weekend away there is always a possibility of snakes being present. Even in the big cities in your own backyard. Micky Bush is a professional snake handler and the snakes pose no threat to the dogs in this setting. Some dogs go through the program more than once in a lifetime and some just need one session. Micky will be sure to tell the owner if the dog would benefit to return next year. This training is important. In most cases, dogs want to be out front while you are walking. So, they will catch the scent of the snake first. Instinctually, most dogs advance to attack but with this training we have heard many stories where the dog will stop in its tracks and back up from the area. This could save a life.
