Here is our last year's poinsetta turning to red. The chickens worked the lowef leaves over the summer but it made a come back. I had to move it in the house for the cold snap.

It is now the optimal time to plant garlic. I took advantage of the warm weather and waited until November to plant my garlic. The straw covering helps to conserve moisture, suppress w**d growth, and offer warmth during the impending cold nights. Garlic bulb development is a time-consuming process. We anticipate harvesting in July.

One of the initiatives I am currently exploring on the farm is cultivating hybrid chestnut trees. We procured and planted 30 Chinese/American chestnut trees in the spring. These were only 6 inch seedlings and 20 survived to the fall. It will take 5 years for our first fruit. The trees that survive will possess the genetics best suited for our area. I hope to then sell seedlings that would be best suited for our area. Chestnuts are great for stuffing and make excellent wildlife food.

The farm is currently experiencing a period of significant activity. The fall rains have initiated the germination of our cover crops. As part of our fall planting regimen, we cultivate wheat, oats, barley, rye, vetch, and various clover species. These crops play a crucial role in enriching the soil, controlling w**ds, and providing a fresh source of greens for our chickens. Rather than harvesting these crops, we incorporate them into the soil before spring planting. Our fall crops are progressing well, with the turnips showing particular promise. We are also engaged in collecting seeds from our okra plants, focusing on those from our most favored specimens for next year's crop. Recently, we harvested 20 pounds of green tomatoes and prepared chow chow, a process that entailed chopping cabbage, tomatoes, onions, and bell peppers for an entire day. I
