Our foundation will be funding more studies aimed at prevention, detection and treatment of hemangiosarcoma thanks to one of our long-time supporters, Nan Stuart.

Sadly, Nan has lost five dogs to hemangiosarcoma including Koaster, Angel Hero #1223, in our Golden Retriever Lifetime Study. Her generous gift directly supports our foundation's efforts to move the needle in this area of medicine to help her dogs and others affected by this deadly cancer.

New Year and new pups!

A very exciting breeding in the oven between our female, Rusty, and an imported European stud, Reggie. Due early March. UK/European goldens have a significantly lower cancer risk than our American bred dogs. Crossing ours on theirs should produce genetically superior dogs, bringing diversity that has been lacking in American lines. Pm the page for more information.

Reggie ”Lanlwyd Cepheus” came to the U.S. from LanLwyd Goldens in Wales to Utah, and is bringing fresh new blood to cross on Rusty’s proven American lines. Reggie comes from outstanding lines with the European equivalent of AFC/FC and MH titles in his background. The COI on this breeding will be a complete outcross on anything we routinely see in field goldens and will bring some much needed variety to a breeding program! We already plan on keeping at least one of these pups!

“He is 70 lb golden specimen. Dark pigment, broad head, muscular chest and powerful frame. He reminds me of a quarter horse rather than a thoroughbred. He's balanced, quick and light on his feet. His work ethic is very good. He's not obsessive. He likes to see the fun in things and works well when he's pleasing the trainer. He's birdy and a steady retriever.”

Yep. But expect toys to be tossed at you to throw back.

I get a lot of questions about field bred goldens in general, and what they’re like. The main question people have is “I want a house dog - can they be that?”. The answer is yes - 90% of my colleagues who own field bred goldens keep them in the house with them. For us, all four of our dogs are inside dogs. Every single one is an excellent companion, and a pet before anything else.

HOWEVER - you need to know your pedigrees, and work with honest breeders. Some lines are content to go on several walks a day, or have a buddy to play with. Others need dedicated training and more intense exercise. Field bred dogs are bred for a working purpose, and are (usually) not happy sleeping on the couch 19 hours out of the day. Brain games and exercise are important for them as an outlet - they’re bred to be smart little athletes!

Important to consider if you’re wanting a golden bred for the field 🙂
