Today’s Welcome Wednesday is a lesson in humility and gratitude.
These two things can be easily lost in today’s world of having everything at our fingertips. We live in a disposable society, making it easy to take what we have for granted.
It feels like we see this daily in rescue with the number of discarded pets.
We see the worst that humans have to offer. Sick and starving dogs. Dogs that were dumped in the middle of nowhere trying to survive on their own. Owners who “don’t have time” for their “fur baby” since having human babies, and everything in between.
This repeated exposure to the cycle of cleaning up after what others have discarded can harden a person. It can make you start to doubt humans as a whole.
Then you are reminded not everyone abuses their pet. Not everyone discards their pet.
You are reminded there are people who will do absolutely everything they can to keep their pet with them until they have legitimately exhausted all other options.
That is the case with our new intake Porkchop. He’s not a dog that was dumped on the side of the road or given up because his family grew tired of him. He hasn’t been abused or neglected.
Porkchop has been a very loved family member. A family member who has been living in a tent with 7 humans after losing their housing.
Read that again. Living in a tent in Alabama in the summer heat with temperatures exceeding 100 degrees.
We could’ve followed in the trend I’ve seen recently of rescues bashing owner surrenders. We could have chosen to say how terrible they are, but we are better than that. We understand there are things in life that are beyond the control of the people it’s happening to.
We understand not everyone views their pet as disposable. We understand people are doing the best they can in the moment they are in. Do we lose sight of that sometimes? Sure. We are human and therefore fallible.
So to Porkchops family we say thank you.
Thank you for reminding us that sometimes doing what’s best for your pet means finding them a new home.
Thank you for putting your pride aside and asking for help.
Thank you for all the love and care your have provided Porkchop in his lifetime.
We want you to know he will continue to be loved and cared for. We want you to know we understand it was an impossible decision to make. We want you to know we see you and we wish the best for you.
To everyone else; stay grateful and humble. We are all in this world together.
We need to get Porkchop up to date on vaccines and heartworm prevention. If you would like to donate towards his care, it would be much appreciated. We have learned that often the dogs who look the worst get the most donations, and while he is not starving or sick (thankfully) we still need funds to provide for him and the others in our care.
Thank you all for your continued support!
