Fermentation festival returns! Like last year, is hosting this celebration of all things fermented with a community space to learn, share, and trade cultures, recipes, and skills. Thanks to friends at , .and.honey.erie , , and more (if you want to lead a workshop or demo, there’s room and a place to sign up on Grounded’s website!). The intentions, the seeds, the tending, the harvest season coming to fruition.

Every year we hope will be an okra year. The plants are over 5 feet tall in the new greenhouse.

The cargo bike trailer is pulling its weight. And then some. Made by the wonderful Bikes At Work in Iowa.

I planted 5 paw paw seeds in spring of 2017 when I lived in a little apartment in little Italy. Two sprouted months later after I moved to 7th St. The two trees are now 7 years old and bearing fruit for the first time 💚 I’ve never stayed in one place so long, and it’s amazing to see what can take root and slowly grow and grow until fully flourishing.

Thinking about a hot sauce CSA for next year. Is anyone into that??

We really need rain. 🙏

It’s flower season here, with the first flower csa shares going out on Friday as we’re welcoming friends back to the farm, human and floral. Noticing when plants bloom and fruit and even die is a big part of each year and season. Even when these markers are earlier than usual, when weather and rain and the future feel uncertain, the reliability of these flowers and their temporary beauty as they attract pollinators and set seed is worth celebrating over and over again.

Sowing seeds, especially this year, feels like an act of hope and resistance and determination to hold onto what is possible even during cold days well below freezing and surrounded by collective grief and exhaustion. The first ones we start are lisianthus and eucalyptus, followed by many tiny herb seeds including za’atar, oregano, rosemary, lavender, chamomile, lemon bergamot, summer thyme. Veggie-wise, we’ve also gently placed the hard seeds of artichoke, onion, and chili peppers into our favorite seed starting mix from .soil and leafy greens like endive, lettuce, kale, and cilantro will follow this week. Peas in the ground too, as it thaws. And the garlic is poking through the straw. Buds are swelling on the fruit trees.

We’ll have starter plants available in May, and sign ups for the flower csa are open now! There are 7 spots left, so if you’re thinking about fresh flowers on your table all summer and fall, now’s the time. The flowers we grow and sell financially support the farm’s community work and the food and time we joyfully share at low or no monetary cost. Now is not too early to think about Easter and Mothers Day gifts. All of you who follow wild field and support our work are a gift as well. Maybe you’re about to sow some new seeds too! Let us know how it’s going, and together we’re building new foodways and relationships of mutual aid in Erie 💚 🌱 💚 speaking of, this year, we’re offering ALL plants as pay-what-you-can, including free, to honor the now three year tradition of pay what you can farm stand where we share produce with each other and our friends and neighbors and from a place of gratitude for the abundance that is guiding the farm this year. We’re learning and growing and expanding. Sign up for the newsletter, send a message or email, attend a meeting of the Erie food policy advisory council, sign up for the flower csa, lots of ways to get involved if you’re interested 💚

Preparing for the first frost and the forecasted snowflakes means a flurry of bringing potted plants inside, spreading row cover, getting those final seeds and transplants tucked in, spreading compost, cleaning seedling trays, harvesting and processing lots of produce before it begins to rot, and a host of other tasks that feel both urgent and shruggable by this point.

Daylight hours are few. There’s such a heaviness of individual and collective grief and struggle. When the sorrow and the lists of what needs doing weigh especially heavy, a gentle reminder to go out in a field and pay attention. Life and death, joy and pain, they’re all happening at once and we’re here together.

The farm’s social media will be pretty quiet for the next three months (we will have dried flowers and fresh wreaths in limited numbers for the holidays), but connecting in other ways is very welcome 💕 Beautiful work is being undertaken in Erie around food, farms, and community, and there’s space at the table 🥘

Gratitude to all who helped make Erie’s Fermentation Festival happen this past Friday! We had the best time at and were amazed by the turnout!!

The reason we farm in the city and farm at all is because of the power and possibility inherent in the connections among people, plants, and shared foodways. Community naturally creates when we’re processing foods for the cold season, and a night spent chopping veggies and filling jars was the perfect reminder of that!

So thankful for such an amazing space and for all the folks who grew or brought food, fermented goods to share and swap, for help with printing handouts and setting up and cleaning up and transporting everything. We’re not aiming for self-reliance but Interdependence and mutual aid and joy!

If you couldn’t make it and would like the handouts and recipes, send me a message with your email address and I’ll gladly pass them along! Already dreaming for next year 🥬

Rainy days mean more kitchen time 🧑‍🍳 Seems like everyone is craving the arrival of summer produce—tomatoes, squash, cukes—and I hope we don’t also miss savoring the early ones like this escarole, dill, salad turnips, the first baby beets, and the last of the radishes! Topped with homemade tempeh from and a maple mustard vinaigrette with homemade fermented mustard, cherries picked down the street, and toasted pecans, this salad is a nice little farewell to spring since we won’t see some of these foods at the farm again until fall or next year!

We’ll have flowers, greens, sugar snap peas, lots of herbs, garlic scapes, fennel, and we’d love to see you!
