Wow! We are humbled by the generosity of our community members who chipped in for our shelter dogs and purchased a bag of Redford dog food to donate to EHS!

To date, between Pet Supplies Plus - West Erie, PA and Pet Supplies Plus - Harborcreek, PA, 46 bags of Redford dog food (that’s 1,288 lbs), have been purchased by our community members, exceeding the stores’ combined goal of 40 bags.

We are so grateful for the outpouring of support! There’s still time to buy a bag of food at either store, for $40, to donate to the Erie Humane Society, through close of business on December 31!

Thank you to our friends at both Erie Pet Supplies Plus locations and a huge thank you to our neighbors in the community for your donation!

Happy Monday!

The following is a beautiful sentiment shared with us by a very dedicated volunteer. We are always in awe of the unconditional love of companion animals. They are truly a gift to our lives and our hope is that they all find themselves wrapped in warmth and love in their forever homes.

“The dogs I know have more soul, more heart, more love, more connection, more patience, and more softness than any human I’ve ever met. They don’t ask for anything—no explanations, no justifications. They just stay, steady and sure, as if they’ve always known what you need before you do.

People complicate love. They wrap it in conditions, dress it in expectations. Dive it towards pain and disappointment. A dog doesn’t do that. Their love is raw, honest, and without strings. Without complications. They see you—not the version you show the world, but the one you keep buried. And they love that version most of all.

I’ve met plenty of people, but none have ever matched the soft, gentle loyalty of a dog. They don’t try to fix you; they just sit beside you, whole and true. Through thick and thin. And that’s more than most humans will ever understand.”

- Drake, R.M. Dog People.

The dog in the upper right corner (Kitana) is available for adoption at the Erie Humane Society. The other three (Kilo, Barry, and Beau) were recently adopted. They are wonderful.

Do you believe in Christmas miracles? We sure do! Two of our longest stay residents have found homes to spend this holiday season, and every other holiday season fur-ever!

Our longest stay dog, Marigold, has been patiently waiting 1 year, 5 months, and 3 days for a place to call her own. She was one of our foster-to-adopt candidates, and they made her an official family member 12/23/24!

The miracle did not stop there, and Ziggy, our longest stay cat, ALSO found his forever home on 12/23/24. He has been with us for 1 year, 9 months, and 21 days! Can you believe it?!

We are so happy when ANY of our shelter animals find homes, but it hits the heart especially deep when we know how long some of our residents have waited for this moment.

Congratulations to Marigold and Ziggy, and the families who have chosen to adopt this holiday season. We could not thank you enough!

Come visit us and find your new best fur-friend! Happy Holiday everyone!

Erie Humane Society Friends & Supporters:

This is a difficult message to deliver, but we are writing to inform you that the EHS Board of Directors became aware of potential wrongdoing by the former executive director and turned the matter over to the Millcreek Police. While this was not an easy decision, the board is confident that taking legal action was appropriate—and necessary—to protect the interests and integrity of the Erie Humane Society.

This is a challenging time for all of us at EHS, but we continue to focus on our no-kill mission to rescue, rehabilitate and rehome pets in need, and we’re excited for the opportunity to bring new leadership, ideas and energy to the organization. With the support of our loyal staff, volunteers, donors and sponsors, we’re heading into our 132nd year ready to make the Erie Humane Society even stronger than ever.

This Saturday, the shelter pets were blessed enough to have TWO large donations brought in by some of our generous community members.

Melissa Sinclair celebrated her 40th birthday and asked for 40 blankets to donate to shelter pets in the Erie area. She ended up receiving a total of 142!

Our shelter pets and shelter employees appreciate everything the public members choose to do for the animals out of the kindness of their hearts. We could not continue our work without you!

128 Years Serving Erie County

In 1892, the Erie Humane Society was incorporated as a private, non-profit, charitable organization of the Commonwealth of PA. The initial mission was to investigate crimes of animal, child, and elder abuse.

Since 2015, the shelter has refocused its efforts on Rescuing, Rehabilitating, and Rehoming pets to the best of our ability. The vision is to ensure refuge, develop relationships, and work with companion animals that are in need of rehabilitation prior to adoption.

Operating under “No-Kill” standards, the Erie Humane Society works to rehabilitate the whole pet, understanding their behavior, medical, and emotional needs. Because of our dedication and commitment to reintegration efforts, pets are given an opportunity to start a fresh chapter while waiting to find their forever homes.

The Erie Humane Society is not a chapter of the Humane Society of the United States --in fact, the HSUS does not operate chapters or shelter. We are a local, independent, registered 501-c3 nonprofit organization. We rely on grant funding, modest adoption fees, and the generous support of our community.
