The Erie Humane Society takes great honor in providing assistance to veterans residing in the Erie community. We recognize and acknowledge the substantial sacrifices these veterans have made for the safety of our nation and the challenges they face.

It is estimated that approximately 20% of veterans returning from overseas suffer from PTSD and/or depression. When Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBIs) are taken into account, the percentage of veterans grappling with incapacitating symptoms such as severe social anxiety, flashbacks, nightmares, and hyper vigilance, is significantly higher. It is in this regard that we aim to extend our assistance. The Erie Humane Society has been proud to provide our grass roots Shelter to Service Program to the Erie Community for the past 4.5 years. This program awards a local military veteran a highly trained service dog to provide support and companionship in their daily lives.

Our service dogs are meticulously selected based on their solid temperaments, calm demeanor, and ability to perform under pressure. Moreover, many of them exhibit high levels of intuition and are chosen for their potential to form deep bonds, enabling them to alert their veteran to issues such as seizures, migraines, or debilitating shifts in mood before the veteran is even aware of them.

Since the inception of this program, we have successfully awarded 4 dogs to deserving veterans.

If you are a veteran and are interested in our 2025 Shelter to Service dog, please visit our website at eriehumanesociety.org and apply through the shelter to service program.

Some people here at the Erie Humane Society have started calling me ET behind my back. Do you think we look alike? There is one thing that both of us desperately want: We want to go home! My name is Pepper and I am a one-year-old Pug. I walk well on a leash and take my treats gently. I am affectionate and enjoy the occasional belly rub. I’m afraid, however, I don’t get along with other dogs and cats, but I love people, even little ones. Come meet me at the Erie Humane Society but please don’t call me ET!

128 Years Serving Erie County

In 1892, the Erie Humane Society was incorporated as a private, non-profit, charitable organization of the Commonwealth of PA. The initial mission was to investigate crimes of animal, child, and elder abuse.

Since 2015, the shelter has refocused its efforts on Rescuing, Rehabilitating, and Rehoming pets to the best of our ability. The vision is to ensure refuge, develop relationships, and work with companion animals that are in need of rehabilitation prior to adoption.

Operating under “No-Kill” standards, the Erie Humane Society works to rehabilitate the whole pet, understanding their behavior, medical, and emotional needs. Because of our dedication and commitment to reintegration efforts, pets are given an opportunity to start a fresh chapter while waiting to find their forever homes.

The Erie Humane Society is not a chapter of the Humane Society of the United States --in fact, the HSUS does not operate chapters or shelter. We are a local, independent, registered 501-c3 nonprofit organization. We rely on grant funding, modest adoption fees, and the generous support of our community.
