Adoption Requirements/Policies

You are applying for a minimum commitment of 10-15 years when you adopt a pet. Be sure you are willing and able to make the investment in time, finances, and training (average $1,000 annually) to properly care and maintain your new pet!

If you own your own home we will check to verify. If you rent/rent to own we will need the contact information for the property owner in order to verify that you are allowed to have a pet on the property. Please talk to your landlord about adopting as there may be breed and size restrictions that may apply.

If you have been employed for less than a year, you will be required to show proof of income!

We DO allow out of the area adoptions - however everyone living in the home as well as any dogs must come to the shelter to meet with the animal of interest to process your adoption! You will be required to provide us with proof of home ownership if you own your home - a copy of your deed, mortgage statement, or property tax form are all acceptable. We do not take deposits and/or put holds on the animals available for adoption and we do not ship our pets - adoption requires a face to face interview with a member of our staff and your personal interaction with the animal. There are no exceptions to this rule! A 24 hour meet and greet hold can potentially be placed on an animal of interest as long as your application has been pre-approved and there are no other applications pending on that specific animal (this hold only applies to out of area adopters and may exclude puppy adoptions)!!

Everyone including ALL children (if any) present in the home will be required to come in to meet with the animal of interest. Adoptions are based on the best possible fit for the new owner and animal. Adoptions are never done on a "first come/first serve basis". Your application may be approved or denied for any reason as we are trying to find the best fit possible in choosing lifelong homes. All of our animals are spayed/neutered and up to date on their vaccinations. Basic Exams and Veterinary Care is provided for all animals in our care.

A "Meet and Greet" is required if you have other pets in your home (dogs only). All pets in the home must be Spayed/Neutered and up to date on at least their Rabies vaccines in order to be considered to adopt! It is HIGHLY recommended that your dog/s also be up to date on the Bordetella ( Kennel Cough) Vaccine in order to help prevent them from contracting kennel cough as it is an airborne virus that is prominent here at the shelter. Please consult with your Veterinarian and/or call the shelter if you have questions.

We do not refund adoption fees or reimburse for expenses. Any expenses related to owning a pet are solely the responsibility of the new owner beginning when the animal leaves the shelter. This includes, but is not limited to adequate food, shelter, and veterinary care.

Hi! My name is Sweetie! I am a young adult female Lionhead rabbit. My owner was moving and unable to take me with her. I am very sweet, friendly and super social! My adoption fee is $75.00 and includes a super nice big enclosure for me and some supplies to get us started.

Yesterday we assisted PA State Police through a Police Intervention removing 28 animals from a home where the owner was no longer able to provide them proper care. Their owner realized rehoming these animals was in their best interest so they are here now and getting ready to meet YOU! 2 dogs, 2 cats and 24 birds are all being processed and prepped for adoption. They will be posted soon with their details if you're interested in adopting. Large exotic birds will require homes with experience with these beautiful birds. Please wait to apply until they are posted with their descriptions to see if they would fit into your home/life BEFORE sending an email or stopping by to meet them. We are hoping to have everyone ready for adoption by the end of the week. Happy Tuesday!

CALLING ALL LAB LOVERS - ESPECIALLY YELLOW LABS!!!!!

Earlier this week we received a call from PA State Police near State College regarding a situation involving a "breeder" of Labrador Retrievers. They needed a place for the dogs (Needy and Neglected) to go for Rescue, Rehabilitation and Rehoming...and they know all too well...THAT'S WHO ARE AND WHAT WE DO. So...the dogs arrived yesterday and are in the midst of the triage process. During this time they receive the initial intake vaccines and parasite controls and their temperaments and medical needs are assessed. They are cataloged and inventoried then prepared for spay/neuter surgery and/or any other extraneous medical attention they may need from our wonderful veterinary staff. Shout out to staff members, Briley, Kaylie and Alicia for spending the day with these 14 beauties getting them ready for their next phase in the rehabilitation process so they can meet YOU soon!!!! There are 6 males and 8 females that will be ready for adoption (hopefully) early next week. We won't know much more until their evaluations are completed by Dr. Lyon. As soon as they're ready for adoption we will post their individual pictures and descriptions. Please hold off on sending inquiries and/or applications until they are posted. THESE DOGS ARE NOT CURRENTLY AVAILABLE FOR YOU TO MEET. We will let you know just as soon as they are. 💚

Anna (in the green ANNA T) and her siblings, Jake and Gia, held a lemonade sale for the shelter. She chose the shelter animals to receive the proceeds and even made bracelets to add to the donation money! They stopped by with the money and spent time with the animals! Thanks to this great family for thinking of us!
