On Monday, this precious pregnant dog came in as a stray. We named her Mamas thinking someone would be coming to reclaim their very pregnant dog within a day. Sadly, no one did. On Friday, Mamas went into labor. For the next 24 hours, staff member, Alicia, sat with her and tended to her while she gave birth to 10 PUPPIES!!!!! On Saturday morning she was EXHAUSTED but much more relaxed for sure. Thanks to our wonderful fosters, Kyle and Matt, who opened their hearts and home to this little family. They sent us some pictures of them settled in last night...you can see Mamas smiling in the one! If you're interested in fostering send and email to Hayley at [email protected] for more information.

Adoption Requirements/Policies

You must be at least 21 years of age in order to be considered as a potential adopter! You are applying for a minimum commitment of 10-15 years when you adopt a pet. Be sure you are willing and able to make the investment in time, finances, and training (average $1,000 annually) to properly care and maintain your new pet!

If you own your own home we will check to verify. If you rent/rent to own we will need the contact information for the property owner in order to verify that you are allowed to have a pet on the property. Please talk to your landlord about adopting as there may be breed and size restrictions that may apply.

If you have been employed for less than a year, you will be required to show proof of income!

We DO allow out of the area adoptions - however everyone living in the home as well as any dogs must come to the shelter to meet with the animal of interest to process your adoption! You will be required to provide us with proof of home ownership if you own your home - a copy of your deed, mortgage statement, or property tax form are all acceptable. We do not take deposits and/or put holds on the animals available for adoption and we do not ship our pets - adoption requires a face to face interview with a member of our staff and your personal interaction with the animal. There are no exceptions to this rule! A 24 hour meet and greet hold can potentially be placed on an animal of interest as long as your application has been pre-approved and there are no other applications pending on that specific animal (this hold only applies to out of area adopters and may exclude puppy adoptions)!!

Everyone including ALL children (if any) present in the home will be required to come in to meet with the animal of interest. Adoptions are based on the best possible fit for the new owner and animal. Adoptions are never done on a "first come/first serve basis". Your application may be approved or denied for any reason as we are trying to find the best fit possible in choosing lifelong homes. All of our animals are spayed/neutered and up to date on their vaccinations. Basic Exams and Veterinary Care is provided for all animals in our care.

A "Meet and Greet" is required if you have other pets in your home (dogs only). All pets in the home must be Spayed/Neutered and up to date on at least their Rabies vaccines in order to be considered to adopt! It is HIGHLY recommended that your dog/s also be up to date on the Bordetella ( Kennel Cough) Vaccine in order to help prevent them from contracting kennel cough as it is an airborne virus that is prominent here at the shelter. Please consult with your Veterinarian and/or call the shelter if you have questions.

We do not refund adoption fees or reimburse for expenses. Any expenses related to owning a pet are solely the responsibility of the new owner beginning when the animal leaves the shelter. This includes, but is not limited to adequate food, shelter, and veterinary care.

Yesterday morning was BUSY with the Shepherd intake...and just as we were cleaning up for the evening we received a call from City of Erie Government Police Department about a black lab that had been hit by a car on Buffalo Road in Erie. Neighbors informed the officer that she had been left by her owners months ago and that she had a litter of puppies under a shed. This rescue was definitely a group effort! Thankfully, Gretchen was already working dogs and was able to come out with us and fit into the tiniest opening where mama had been going in and out. The puppies were terrified and difficult to grab but after a few hours all 8 puppies and mama were on their way to triage at the shelter! Mama has some bumps and bruises but is otherwise doing well. The puppies are about 5-6 weeks old and feeling much better today! A big thank you and shout out to EPD Officer Schroeck, the neighbors, members, Lex, Anna, Ruth, Becky, Chris and ESPECIALLY GRETCHEN for saving these wonderful dogs!!! Mom and babies are resting comfortably and should be available in the next few weeks!!!!

Also - Erie Gives has been extended to midnight tonight so if you're able you can still make a donation that will be matched by some local businesses and The Erie Community Foundation which will give a little more bang to your buck! We truly appreciate the love and support which helps us - help them!!!!

CALLING ALL SHEPHERD LOVERS!!!!!!

This morning we assisted PA State Police with 12 Shepherds that were removed from a horrible environment. These poor dogs had been kept in small filthy cages with no food or water. They were covered in urine and f***s. Thankfully, they are safe now and on their way to recovery. They will be vetted tomorrow by our wonderful Dr. Lyon and hopefully ready for adoption by the end of the week. They are all females ranging in ages from six months to one year. There are German, Shiloh, Dutch, Belgian Shepherds, a Belgian Malinois and Belgian Tavern. We will be looking for Shepherd savvy homes to help these dogs thrive and blossom. If you're interested in meeting/adopting one of these ladies, please email [email protected]. This is an active police investigation but the dogs have all been surrendered to the shelter - we are confident justice will be served for these beautiful souls. Please send your good vibes, love, prayers and best wishes for all of them and all of us! Another case in point...when they need us...we need you!

If you're able to make a donation to help these and all of the Needy and Neglected Animals here at the shelter - remember us tomorrow with Erie Gives 2024. This will give a little more bang to your buck making it go that much further! Tomorrow, August 13th from 8am-8pm just click the link below to donate and SHARE!!!!

Hi! My name is Conky! I am a one year old neutered male Pit Bull mix. I am a pretty much full grown at 43 pounds. I came here with my buddy, Carla. We were running around and picked up as strays. Sadly, no one came to claim us. I am very sweet and love making new friends! I enjoy time in the yard and attention from the girls! I seem to get along well with the other dogs here but haven't met any kitties here yet. We are both looking for great new families to love us FOREVER!!! If you'd like to come and meet me, please come to the shelter during our adoption hours - Mondays and Wednesdays noon – 7, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, noon - 5 or Saturdays, noon - 4. Emails are fine but if you really are interested in me - please just come into the shelter. Sometimes, by the time the staff gets to the emails - a home has already been selected for me!!! Remember, adoptions are never "first come first served" however sometimes the best home comes in right away and I get adopted! Read the requirements to adopt and come prepared. We believe if it's meant to be - everything will work out for both of us - and if you don't end up adopting me then that just means there's another dog that needs you more. Adoption fee is $100.00 which covers the cost of my surgery that has me already "fixed"; my microchip that makes me yours forever in case I get lost; all of the shots a pup like me needs; and has me treated for internal and extremal parasites and help from Dr. Lyon if I need anything within the first 10 days of my adoption! It also gets me half off a groom at our Lend a Paw Spa and discounts for training at Lake Erie K9!

This week started and ended with lots of smelly intakes via PSP Assists! Yesterday morning we were asked to assist with 6 dogs that had been abandoned at a vacant house. Some of the dogs, ranging in ages from 4 months to 2 years, had been tied to the porch while others left in filthy crates. All of the terrified dogs were covered in urine and f***s; very hungry; and loaded with parasites. Assessed by our wonderful Dr. Lyon and under his guidance, TEAM ANNA members, Jester and Chris, spent the day triaging this group which included much needed medicated baths! Once cleaned up and fed - this group of Border Collies proved to be as resilient as they are intelligent and soaked up all of the love TEAM ANNA members, Alicia, Alysha and Ruth could give them! These dogs are part of an active Police Investigation and are not yet available for adoption. If you are interested in adopting one of the dogs, and have knowledge of the breed, please email [email protected]. We're so proud to work with State Troopers who truly care about the animals in our Commonwealth! We're lucky to have such caring people helping us humans and the animals! 💚❤

Hello! My name is Emerson! I am a 16 week old neutered male tabby kitten. I came to the shelter as a stray and sadly no one came to claim me. I am a little shy at first but once I warm up, I love attention! I am quite the athlete, you know! I love playing with toys, especially the ones that jingle and roll. I get along well with the other kittens here too. If you'd like to meet me, stop by the shelter! I'll be hanging out in the cat room! My adoption fee is only $25 and that covers my spay/neuter surgery; microchip; parasite control and all age appropriate vaccines. They'll even give you a free litter box if you'd like!

Yesterday members of spent much of the day on a rescue mission assisting PA State Police who had responded to a welfare check at a residence in Erie County. Thankfully, the human involved has been removed from this environment and is receiving the care they desperately need. We were asked to remove the 2 dogs and the estimated 75-100 cats in and around the house. Sadly the animals in the house needed as much care as their human. Several animals didn't make it and many others are in desperate need of medical attention. As of last night we have removed 42 cats and 2 dogs. We are now in the process of trapping the remaining 50+ cats living around the house. All of the animals in our care are receiving the medical attention they need and the cats will be assessed for our adoption program and barn cat program. Please keep the human, animals and our staff in your thoughts and prayers and send good your most positive vibes and energy their way! These kinds of rescues are heavy and resource depleting - emotionally, physically, financially, etc. Donations are appreciated if you're able - clumping cat litter, Purina Cat and Kitten Chow, canned cat food, or monetary to help us cover this large intake. 💚❤
