Adoption Requirements/Policies

You are applying for a minimum commitment of 10-15 years when you adopt a pet. Be sure you are willing and able to make the investment in time, finances, and training (average $1,000 annually) to properly care and maintain your new pet!

If you own your own home we will check to verify. If you rent/rent to own we will need the contact information for the property owner in order to verify that you are allowed to have a pet on the property. Please talk to your landlord about adopting as there may be breed and size restrictions that may apply.

If you have been employed for less than a year, you will be required to show proof of income!

We DO allow out of the area adoptions - however everyone living in the home as well as any dogs must come to the shelter to meet with the animal of interest to process your adoption! You will be required to provide us with proof of home ownership if you own your home - a copy of your deed, mortgage statement, or property tax form are all acceptable. We do not take deposits and/or put holds on the animals available for adoption and we do not ship our pets - adoption requires a face to face interview with a member of our staff and your personal interaction with the animal. There are no exceptions to this rule! A 24 hour meet and greet hold can potentially be placed on an animal of interest as long as your application has been pre-approved and there are no other applications pending on that specific animal (this hold only applies to out of area adopters and may exclude puppy adoptions)!!

Everyone including ALL children (if any) present in the home will be required to come in to meet with the animal of interest. Adoptions are based on the best possible fit for the new owner and animal. Adoptions are never done on a "first come/first serve basis". Your application may be approved or denied for any reason as we are trying to find the best fit possible in choosing lifelong homes. All of our animals are spayed/neutered and up to date on their vaccinations. Basic Exams and Veterinary Care is provided for all animals in our care.

A "Meet and Greet" is required if you have other pets in your home (dogs only). All pets in the home must be Spayed/Neutered and up to date on at least their Rabies vaccines in order to be considered to adopt! It is HIGHLY recommended that your dog/s also be up to date on the Bordetella ( Kennel Cough) Vaccine in order to help prevent them from contracting kennel cough as it is an airborne virus that is prominent here at the shelter. Please consult with your Veterinarian and/or call the shelter if you have questions.

We do not refund adoption fees or reimburse for expenses. Any expenses related to owning a pet are solely the responsibility of the new owner beginning when the animal leaves the shelter. This includes, but is not limited to adequate food, shelter, and veterinary care.

CALLING ALL CHIHUAHUA LOVERS!!!!!

Yesterday, we were called by local authorities to help with a situation before it got too much more out of control. 19 Chihuahuas joined us to find their new families! The dogs range in age from 12 weeks to 6 years old. There are apple heads, deer heads, long haired and short haired in every color and coat pattern. They're all very sweet and full of Chihuahua sass and s***k balanced out with the best snuggle and cuddle ever! They will be available beginning sometime next week so stay tuned! If you'd like to send you application in for preapproval please email it to [email protected]. If you can't adopt but would like to help with small breed dog food (dry or Cesar packets) you can drop that off to the shelter or have it sent via Amazon, Chewy or any other way you can get it here.

Once again...COMMERCIAL BREEDERS DO NOT CARE ABOUT THE DOGS...especially the mamas. These are not professional breeders trying to procure a breed they truly love...the dogs and puppies they produce are commodities with financial gain being their only motive. We recently assisted in the rescue of dogs in a breeding facility where they were overcrowded and not receiving proper care. Although there were a number of breeds being bred on this property, we took in 18 Doberman Pinchers. They range in age from 10 months to 4 years. Most of the dogs have some neglect related issues that are being addressed and treated by Dr. Zeigler; and will be ready for adoption soon. All of the dogs are very sweet; most are social but some are very shy. We are looking for homes with breed experience...or at least homes that have done research on the breed. This group of dogs will be met by appointment only. If you are interested in adopting please email your application to [email protected]. We are hoping they will be ready to go home in the next week or two.

Hi! My name is Shadow! I am three year old neutered male Cattle dog mix. I weigh 66 pounds. I came here with 31 Mini Poodles. They lived in the house but I stayed outside. I'm a really good boy. I love other dogs but haven't met any kitties at all. I have some left over neglect issues that are healing but it's all stuff I can recover from with my new family. All of my needs will be taken care of here - so all you need to do is LOVE me!!!!! If you'd like to come and meet me, please come to the shelter during our adoption hours - Mondays and Wednesdays noon – 7, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, noon - 5 or Saturdays, noon - 4. Emails are fine but if you really are interested in me - please just come into the shelter. Sometimes, by the time the staff gets to the emails - a home has already been selected for me!!! Remember, adoptions are never "first come first served" however sometimes the best home comes in right away and I get adopted! Read the requirements to adopt and come prepared. We believe if it's meant to be - everything will work out for both of us - and if you don't end up adopting me then that just means there's another dog that needs you more. Adoption fee is $200.00 which covers the cost of my surgery that has me already "fixed"; my microchip that makes me yours forever in case I get lost; all of the shots a pup like me needs; and has me treated for internal and extremal parasites and help from Dr. Lyon if I need anything within the first 10 days of my adoption! It also gets me half off a groom at our Lend a Paw Spa and discounts for training at Lake Erie K9!

Calling all Miniature Poodle Lovers!!!!!

Yesterday morning, staff members, Ruth, Briley, Eric, Becky and Jeff assisted PA State Police removing 31 Miniature Poodles from a home where they were not being properly cared for. Although they were loved by their owner they were lacking medical, grooming and basic care - enough so that the State Police had to step in. By 4pm all of the dogs were at the shelter being triaged by Dr. Zeigler and her tech, Jester, assisted by Ruth and Briley. Once their medical needs were assessed and treatments began - Brooke and Tammy from came in and worked til 1am grooming those dogs in the most dire need. They will finish grooming all of the dogs today and they will be spayed/neutered Friday by Drs. Zeigler and Lyon and ready for adoption soon after! The dogs are all Miniature Poodles and range in age from 12 weeks to 7 years and are between 3-12 pounds. They are all very sweet and loving. We will be taking applications to meet these pups when they are available via our website emailed to [email protected] or stop in to fill one out. They will not be available to meet in person without an approved application and via appointment.

*****WARNING - GRPHIC PHOTOS THAT MAY BE DISTURBING!*****

We were called by PA State Police in the evening late last week about a dog in need of medical care. The Trooper was unsure of the severity of the injuries but knew this poor dog couldn't wait. He explained the dog was bleeding from around his neck area and would not let them approach. member, Alison, went out to assist and was able to coax him into her car. She rushed him to our wonderful Dr. Zeigler and her staff at ANNA Wellness Center West for immediate triage. Upon his initial exam the horrifying discovery was made... He had a large industrial sized zip tie tightly secured around his neck - so tight it had cut through his fur and flesh and had sliced into his trachea. He was rushed into emergency surgery where it was discovered he had two bullets in his shoulder from being shot. The good news is...he is recovering well at the clinic surrounded by staff members who love him already! He is a young adult (now neutered) male Silver Labrador Retriever mix. This case is under investigation by . If you have any information or would be interested in adopting him when he is ready, please email [email protected]. He loves other dogs, kids and kitties too. He still has a ways to go but is at least on the road to recovery. His name is Hall - so send him all of the love, prayers, good vibes and well wishes - we know he'll feel them!!!! Special thanks to the Troopers at PSP for loving the animals like we do! ❤💚

Another great adoption sponsored by Ryan Bizzarro Ryan's Rescue Program! Ross and Connie BOTH served our country in the U.S. Navy and are now both retired. They fell in love with Coco and opened their hearts and home to this special boy! Thanks to for sponsoring this perfect match with a very deserving Veteran family! ❤💚
