As a hospital, we do our best to provide a minimal stress and fear environment. Dogs and cats can associate smells, sounds, and words with different experiences, good or bad. Here are some tips you can use to reduce stress before and during the appointment!

Cats:
1. cover the carrier with a towel sprayed with Feliway during transport
2. utilize our cat waiting room to reduce noise induced stress
3. bring cats in a carrier that the top can be removed, we can perform exams in the bottom half of the carrier where the cat is more comfortable

Dogs:
1. let us know if your dog is reactive to other dogs, we can bring them in a different entrance to minimize contact
2. Giving any medications prescribed for sedation or calming effects prior to the appointment

We are adding some new fear free handling techniques to our exams and tech appointments in the coming days. These are some things you can do to help reduce stress for your pet.

February is National Pet Dental Health Month. At-home and routine dental care is a vital part of your pet’s health.

A routine dental procedure requires general anesthesia and includes the following: oral exam, full mouth dental x-rays, ultrasonic scaling, polishing, probing, and charting.

Dental x-rays show us if there are abnormalities like fractured roots or bone loss under the gums.

As plaque builds up on the tooth surface, it hardens creating tartar. This pushes the gum line back causing gingivitis and bone loss. Resorptive lesions occur when the body starts to “absorb” the tooth, turning it to bone.

Once a dental procedure is performed, you can continue with at-home care to help decrease the amount of plaque that builds up on the tooth surface.

If you have any questions about dental care, call us to schedule an appointment to discuss the next steps!

January is National Train Your Dog Month!

Training is a VERY important part of owning a dog. It keeps them mentally stimulated and strengthens the human animal bond.

Different breeds have been bred for specific purposes. Before adopting or buying a dog, make sure to do your research. Look into breed specifics, training options, and good at home practices before bringing a new dog into your home.

Patience is also a key factor in training. The things you learn during training sessions need to be continued at home to keep your dog stimulated and continuing their good behaviors.

The number one reason dogs are taken to shelters is due to “bad behavior”. A lot of new owners don’t realize that some of these “annoying” behaviors are due to stress/anxiety, under stimulation, or breed specifics.

Doing proper research and enrolling in a good training program will help your pet ownship experience be enjoyable for both you and your new pet!

A new year—a new lease on life!!! This is Hartley who sees Dr. Jewell for acupuncture. It might not seem like much, but this is a nearly 15 year old dog who, after three accupuncture treatments, ran like this for about a full mile. I had stopped taking him on that route a few years ago as he couldn’t really manage it anymore. I was so amazed when he just wanted to keep going! ~Hartley’s mom

Please call our office at 814-864-3019 if you would like to discuss acupuncture for your dog or cat. Give them a new lease on life!

To know him is to love him. Dr. Felix dedicated his entire life to treating our furry companions, to volunteering at the zoo, to starting after-hours’ emergency care, and to volunteering to help the birds of prey at Tamarack. Dr. Felix’s positive attitude is one thing we loved the most about him at GPH. He always came to work with a smile on his face and a heart of gold. He had an amazing way of always finding the positive in people. His infectious laugh brought happiness to anyone around him. He always had some jokes for us that he heard from his riding buddies or at the YMCA! If he didn’t have a joke for us, then he would get us updated on baseball or any other sport that was currently in season. Dr. Felix mentored countless new vets throughout his career and taught not only medicine but how to treat the people attached to those sweet babies. There will never be anyone else like you, Ken. We will miss you always. All the love in the world.

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Dr. PJ Polumbo. Dr. Polumbo was a part of Glenwood for 29 years as a veterinarian and owner. “PJ” as she was known to many was a kind and talented, hard-working doctor to her many clients. PJ dedicated her life to taking care of people’s pets. It wasn’t unusual to see her at the pet hospital from early morning until closing time. When PJ wasn’t at Glenwood, you could find her at the zoo where she put countless hours in caring for the many zoo animals. It was a great love of hers! PJ was not only a great doctor but a great boss and friend to all who worked for her. She always cared about peoples personal lives as well as their work life. To say she will be missed is any understatement. It is with great sadness we say goodbye to a great doctor and a dear friend.

Please join us in celebrating and honoring their life and dedication to the Erie community. We will miss them terribly. ❤️
