So just an FYI to dog owners at there, if you have not heard there will be new regulations going into effect on August 1 affecting the importation of dogs into the US. This includes dogs who leave the US and return (with their owners or not) and also includes dogs who cross the border into Canada. The exact implications of this are somewhat difficult to figure out at the moment, and some of the certificates needed may not be available until June or July; but take homes include NO dogs under six months will be allowed into the country (no importing of puppies). Popping across the Canadian border for a dog show or quick vacation is going to become considerably more difficult, maybe impossible. And be sure if you plan to LEAVE the country with your pet that you address everything that needs to be done to bring him back BEFORE you go, or risk not being able to get them back in.

I have more questions than answers for you at this point, but keep an eye on this blog- it usually has good info and hopefully will update us as we know more. Apparently this all was passed by the CDC without necessarily working with the USDA who will have to be the ones to enforce it. Also be aware that not all veterinarians are USDA accredited, it is a separate process from typical state licensing.

The Worms and Germs Blog authored by Drs. Scott Weese and Maureen Anderson covers animal health and diseases and is published by the Ontario Veterinary College University of Guelph.

Just for kicks last week, I did a tally of the most common dog names in my client base over the past 34 years.

Any guesses as to the winner?

Important info about the outbreaks of upper respiratory disease in dogs. It's likely that we will continue to see new pathogens and new outbreaks of respiratory disease; the best way to protect your dog is to vaccinate for the agents we have vaccines for (bordetella, parainfluenza, both strains of influenza) if your dog has exposure to other dogs. Even though this outbreak does not appear to be one of these agents, co-infections are often important in severity of respiratory disease.

So today really was a GOOD FRIDAY...our last appointment was to check a cat for a microchip; he had been taken in by a Good Samaritan just before Christmas when the weather got cold, and had been living alternating between his basement and his sunroom because he didn't get along well with the resident cat. Mike R., the "Good Sam", had posted him on Nextdoor and had finally decided he would keep the cat because he was a nice boy (despite resident kitty's dissenting opinion!), but he thought he had better check and make sure he wasn't microchipped. And sure enough...he was! AND it was registered and the contact numbers were still good! But he was registered to an address in Florence, 8 miles away. I called his owner who was shocked and excited to hear we had him and described him to a T, down to some very distinctive identifying marks. She immediately told me he had been missing since September 29; Mike thought he had first seen him around sometime in October. His mom Jennifer and her daughter Jaqueline (ironically enough the same name as the street where he was found) came immediately to get him and had a happy reunion. We're not sure how he crossed the expressway and made it all the way there, but suspect there must have been some motor vehicle travel involved; whether it was instigated by "Loki" (originally Todd at the shelter and then Goldie in his finder's home) or by a human we will never know. Loki isn't talking. Microchip your pets!

Last spring we had a long time patient of ours who had an amazing adventure. Merlin was a 14 year old cat who had been a patient of ours since he was a kitten. In mid February his owner let us know that he had disappeared and it didn’t look good for his return. His owner was understandably devastated. Fast forward to mid April when I had my annual phone call with my accountant about my tax return. As it turns out, he is a family member of Merlin’s owner and we were talking about how sad it was that he had disappeared with no closure. About an hour after our phone call, I got another frantic call that Merlin had been found! A good Samaritan had found him in a ditch in Cincinnati and turned him into the shelter there (Merlin’s owner lives in Crestview Hills). The shelter scanned him for a microchip and was able to trace him to his original home very quickly.
Merlin’s owner picked him up and brought him straight to us. He had been missing more than 2 months, had lost half of his body weight and was covered in ticks and a few fleas for good measure. He had an upper respiratory infection and was in kidney failure.
From what his owner was able to piece together, he had donated a sofa which was picked up on the day Merlin disappeared. Apparently Merlin was hiding inside the sofa when it was loaded up and driven away. Somehow he must have escaped during the unloading process and had survived several weeks outdoors in cold weather until he was found not far from where the sofa had been taken. Had it not been for the good Samaritan and the microchip, he would never have found his way home.
We treated Merlin’s ticks and fleas, put him on antibiotics for his respiratory infection, and were able to treat him as an outpatient for his kidney disease. He slowly improved and bounced back to his normal, handsome, if a little geriatric self! He continues to do well and amaze us. I must say his story is the most amazing rescue story I can remember in more than thirty years of practice!
Microchip your pets– it makes it much more likely they will make it home to you if they get lost! And remember also to register the chip and keep the info up to date– if your pet goes missing your first step should be to update the microchip info!

This is Leo, one of our newly diagnosed diabetic patients. His patch is covering a sensor which monitors his blood sugar and sends the info to his owners phone. Given the patch we decorated it up a bit for the Suoer Bowl. Whodey!

Like everyone else we have seen the weather forecast for the next couple of days. We have a full book for Thursday and Friday. If the meteorologists are correct it is unlikely I will be able to get out of my subdivision and into the office (and, also I need to be able to get back home as well). We have a list of our appointments and their contact info. If we are unable to come in we will call you and let you know as early as possible. We don’t have access to check our voicemail from home; so if you have an appointment and plan to cancel and see this please PM us here and let us know. You can also PM if you have any other issues and we will do our best to figure things out. Here’s hoping it all passes us by!

Today we said goodbye to Stevie, one of our clinic kitties. Stevie came to the clinic in 2004; he wasn't a kitten, likely a young adult but his exact age was hard to determine due to the shape he was in. My former receptionist Patti found him by her barn, he was emaciated, covered with bite abcesses, and had a broken jaw. When we examined him he was also blind. But he was so sweet....and he was orange, I'm such a sucker. He threw his head back and started making biscuits and looked just like Stevie Wonder playing his keyboards. You can see where this is going. The deal was supposed to be that I would do what I could if Patti would take him as a barn cat. He didn't do a great job of picking animal hospitals, as I don't do any orthopedics, but I figured wiring a jaw was pretty basic and did my best; turned out ok in the long run. We had to force feed him as he had hepatic lipidosis from not eating but miraculously his vision returned. As you might guess, he ended up not going anywhere and has been here ever since. Stevie was a great socializer of kids, kittens, and puppies; he loved a good snuggle and expected to share your lunch, especially cheese (I won't forget the day I left my McAlistair's giant cheese potatoe for a minute and came back to see him carrying it down the hall). He did NOT like his dinner being late or being the only one shut out of an exam room during an office visit and would retaliate by shredding our checkins, the appointment book, or on one or two occasions a client's check. We know he was at least 18 and probably closer to 20; we had been managing his kidney failure for the last several years with daily subcutaneous fluids (and better not be late with his fluids and treats or there would be hell to pay), but in recent weeks he had started to decline. I hope he is snuggling up with his buddies Grouch, Toulouse, Andy, Cory and Robbie and I hope dinner is always on time in heaven or he will have some complaining to do. Love you Stevie.
