Intro to Odor 1 class is rocking it. They did some containers. Started with open boxes, then tented, then closed. They did a few easy interior searches as well. They are all enjoying the game.

We had a fun day of FETCH Testing yesterday at Bicentennial Park in Cincinnati. We finished right as the skies opened up giving much needed rain to the area. We had several people from our last trial, but we had a lot of new faces and gave out a number of titles. We loved seeing some of our clients come out as well.
Thank you to all who joined us at our event. Title, pass, or not, we think everyone had a good time and got to take home goodies, as well as the best dog.
Big thanks to our helpers - Chris who did check in, was secretary, and made cookies; Lauren who stepped in as photographer when ours didn't show up; Kate's sister Lily who made our photo op (painted and all) and was thrower (she didn't know she had that role. Lol) for several participants, and her friend Hilary who helped with set up: and to our vendor Blazing Good Bites who sold a bunch of yummy treats. We could not have done it without you.
Feel free to post your photos in this thread! We look forward to seeing you in the fall. Date and place aren't set yet so keep an eye out.

Our CGC Prep students are working hard too. In each class, we work on certain exercises. In these, they worked on loose leash walking, walking through a crowd with distractions, stays, and walking with distraction of another dog. They all did well.

While the 4th of July can be a joyous holiday, it can also be a difficult one for your pet. Here are some basic tips to help you and your pet.
We had fun seeing Scout this weekend. We hadn't seen her in a few years, so it was great to see her. We worked with Scout as a puppy through several sessions of day training (around 5-6 months), a group class, and times when she boarded with us.
Now, at 3.5 years old, she has turned into a wonderful companion dog, visiting breweries, parks, and other places. Her owners feel like her foundation training really helped as she is now the dog they dreamed about. ❤️

Cedar, Ruby, and Zia joined us for our CGC Prep class. This first night was mostly review to see where the dogs were on their skills. They all did well.
Our CGC Test is scheduled for July 22nd at Doggie Paddles. If you want to test your dog, you can even without the CGC Prep class. You just need to send us an email at [email protected] you are interested, and then we will send details about a week or so ahead of time. Cost is $15.
We have Drop In Fetch practices starting tomorrow and in July. All practices are at Doggie Paddles in the agility yard. Please let us know if you are planning to come.
Although this facility isn't large enough to run full Advanced or Retriever, we can still help you with basics with blinds and directionals.
Entries are open for our July 28th FETCH Test at Bicentennial Park in Cincinnati, OH. All levels will be tested. Our theme for this test is tie-dye. Every handler who enters will get a tie-dye bandana and a rainbow tennis ball too.
We will also have Blazing Good Bites as a Vendor who makes yummy jerky treats for dogs. All the dogs rave about them!
Remember that this is the last opportunity to test under the current rules. The new rules go into effect August 1st.
We hope you'll join us!
A reminder that the 4th of July is only a 1.5 weeks away. Please contact your vet today if your dog needs meds.
Our Intro to Scent Work class is in full swing. Seóras, Lucy, and Raven are learning hunting skills and how odor moves. They are all enthusiastic and having fun.
Let's welcome Marley, Agatha, Mosa, Rafi, and Stormy to our Basic Foundation Skills class. We're excited to have them in class and see their progress.

Over the weekend, Atreyu and I participated in the new Fetch program AKC started a few weeks ago. We got our Novice Title as well. If you're not familiar with Fetch, check this link out for more information. www.akc.org/fetch. We are hoping to do a Novice Fetch Trial sometime late spring/summer. We think this can be a very fun activity for all those dogs that live take retrieve. Here's a video example of the test. Clapping is not required (lol) but we wanted to give good encouragement for coming back with the toy.
Here is the full PetFest video. When you create a reel, it shortens it to 90sec when there are multiple files. So it is more of a highlight.
Team Jovie and Maddie finished Intro to Agility class. They both did a great job! We look forward to seeing them again. The next evening Intro to Agility class will be in the fall - probably mid September. We keep a running list of people who are interested and then send an email when registration opens. You can email us at [email protected]. These are small classes for lots of individual attention but we do like to have a minimum of three dogs at the start of class. Remember, dogs need to be 10 months or older, be friendly with dogs and people, have had a Basic class - a short stay and come when called, or permission by instructor. If you are not sure, please email us.
Theo and Zia work on recalls in class. They both did well. Recalls are one of the most important skills fir your dog to learn. It takes time to build a reliable recall in many different situations. You start in easy environments first, and then layer in distractions gradually. Part of the key to developing a good recall is genuinely making it worth it for your dog to come - using reinforcers and motivators for your dog. How many reinforcers does your dog have? And remember, with recall especially or really any behavior, what you're really rewarding is the likelihood your dog will perform that behavior. You're essentially building reinforcement history. #DogAbilities
Here are the graduating runs from Hines, Otis, and Zeke. They progressed nicely throughout the class.

Look at Otis and Zeke go! They have both done well learning agilityl. So fun to watch them. . . . . #DogAbilities #northernkydogtrainer #jackrussellterrier #jrtsofinstagram #huskymix #agility #doggiepaddles #dogsofnorthernky #dogsofnky #dogsofdogabilities #florenceky
Beyond Basics class worked on recalls past a container with food. This was challenging for them, but they all prevailed! . . . . #DogAbilities #northernkydogtrainer #beyondbasics #obedience #recall #australianshepherd #weimeraner #chimix #pitbullmix #distractions #positivereinforcement
Basic Foundation Skills students Skye, Olly, River, and Cookie worked on some recalls this week with long lines. Long lines can be great to work with on recalls as they allow you to have more distance with the dog while also still holding a leash. Holding and working with a long takes practice just like any other skill. #DogAbilities
From our home to yours, we hope all are having a nice Thanksgiving holiday. #DogAbilities #Thanksgiving
Our Intro to Odor 1 students finished this class this past Sunday. Opal, Misty, and Beau did great. Opal has become a hunting machine, Misty has built confidence, and Beau has built more clarity and consistency in finding odor. Keep an eye out for our Intro to Scentwork and Intro to Odor 1 and 2 classes in the new year. Those of you who have already expressed an interest will be receiving emails soon. #DogAbilities #nosework #scentwork
Opal loves to hunt. We switched to hotdogs which really ramped her interest and hunt game. She will be moving into our Intro to Odor 1 class next week. #DogAbilities
The recall game at PetFest is always a fun one. This year, we did distractions. The rules were, you had to call your dog with no food or toy lure in your hand, and the dog had to cross the line and sit. #DogAbilities #petfest
Boundary Training with Lady. Her dad reports she understands where it is and has done well with this new behavior with him. This can be one skill accomplished in day training with some dogs. #DogAbilities
****Brag Report**** This may not look like much, but for this dog, this was a big win. Cash had a private lesson at class. Cash has had a hard time with distracting smells and not being able to focus. We've been trying to figure out what reward will work for him. He is not super food motivated. He would sometimes take toys but not consistently. So this class our goal was building reinforcement for the odor. We decided to first just let him smell the room and take his time. Then, we had a bunch of different toys and let him pick and we played with him. Then, we did some work with containers where he saw me move to each of the containers but only one had the birch odor. As soon as his nose hit the correct container with odor, we marked, threw the toy, and let him play a bit. Then, we did a small area with the chairs and an odor on one of them. This clip was the last repetition we did where we moved the hide to a different chair. He first went to where the hide was and he had been rewarded. We wanted to see if he could work it out that no odor was there but on the other chair. He worked it out beautifully, and then got his toy as the reward. All sessions were short and only a few repetitions. We partied after EVERY Repetition. #DogAbilities #nosework #bordercollie
