Fireworks, picnics and other Fourth of July traditions can be great fun for people; but all of the festivities can be frightening and even dangerous for animals. Noisy fireworks and other celebrations can startle animals and cause them to run away; holiday foods can be unhealthy; summer heat and travel can be dangerous; and potentially dangerous debris can end up lying on the ground where pets can eat or play with it.
Whether or not you're planning your own Independence Day celebration, it's important to take precautions to keep your pets safe both during and after Fourth of July festivities.
Our offices will be CLOSED on Tuesday, July 4th 2023 in observance of the Independence Day holiday. We will reopen on Wednesday, July 5th. Thank you, and have a safe and happy 4th of July!
While we all give thanks to all the amazing father's in our lives today, let's also stop to recognize all the veterinary staff on Veterinary Appreciation Day. In 2015, Trupanion created Veterinary Appreciation Day to celebrate the critical role that veterinary professionals play in our lives. From the front desk to technicians to veterinarians, veterinary professionals dedicate countless hours providing compassionate care for our pets, even throughout the most challenging of times. With that, we would like to stop and thank all of our staff for all the hard work and dedication they provide for us. We are so grateful for you!

March is Pet Poison Prevention Awareness Month. You may think it’s easy to keep hazardous substances away from pets, but accidental spills, dropped pills, and even beautiful bouquets can spell disaster for dogs and cats if they’re consumed.
COMMON HOUSEHOLD TOXINS:
*Over-the-counter and prescription medications: The ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center (APCC) reported that these were the most common pet toxins in 2020, accounting for almost 40% of calls they received.
*Food: Especially grapes, raisins, onions, garlic, macadamia nuts, and cherries
*Chocolate: Contains caffeine and a chemical called theobromine, which dogs cannot metabolize. The darker the chocolate, the more toxic it is.
*Xylitol: Sweetener found in sugar-free and other foods, including some peanut butters
*Rodenticides: Either in their pure form or from eating a poisoned rodent
*Cleaners and chemicals: Including bathroom, kitchen, window, and car cleaners, antifreeze, paint thinner, pool and hot tub products, etc.
*Flowers and plants: Especially deadly to cats are all forms of lilies, tulips and daffodils, from bulb to bloom
*Mushrooms and berries: Many are non-toxic, but those that are can be very harmful, so it’s better to assume the worst and avoid them altogether.

Happy St. Patrick's Day from all of us at the San Diego Affordable Spay & Neuter Clinic! Celebrations are fun for us, but it is best to keep potential hazards and toxins out of your pet’s way. Below, you’ll find APCC’s top tips for keeping your furry friends safe, happy and healthy! Shamrocks: These plants are not appropriate for pets and can cause stomach upset, drooling and head shaking when small amounts are ingested. If large amounts are ingested, there are more severe concerns such as a decrease in the blood calcium level and kidney damage. Green Beer: When a pet gets into an unattended or spilled drink, they may show signs of depression and drunkenness within about an hour. This will cause difficulty walking and stomach upset. Dogs who have ingested large amounts of alcohol may have a decreased gag reflex and are at risk for aspiration pneumonia if they inhale the vomit into their lungs. Irish Soda Bread: This bread does contain raisins which can cause kidney failure in dogs.
All of us at the San Diego Affordable Spay & Neuter Clinic wish you a wonderful Thanksgiving. We are so grateful to have you as part of the family!
Happy Halloween from all of us at Affordable Veterinary Care! The ASPCA gives us some helpful pointers to keep our pets safe this holiday. Visit https://www.aspca.org/pet-care/general-pet-care/halloween-safety-tips for more information!
October 16 is National Feral Cat Day, so start practicing your alley cat strut and get your feline friends together. This is a day to celebrate cats of all stripes, no matter where they call home. Feral cats have been stigmatized the world over, but thanks to this holiday, we can change how we see these lovable nomads. NATIONAL FERAL CAT DAY ACTIVITIES 1 . Take part in a Trap-Neuter-Return effort Anyone can make a big difference by taking part in a Trap-Neuter-Return effort. This entails humanely trapping a feral cat in a boxtrap, bringing it to us to be spayed or neutered, then letting it go in its wild home. This keeps the cat safe, but is also an investment in the future to ensure the feral cat population remains contained. 2. Adopt a cat TNR is a great method for controlling pet populations, but if adoption is a possible method for you, this is also an instrumental way to make a difference in the lives of feral cats. On October 16, there will be several shelters hosting adopt-a-thons, so find one near you and bring home a new member of the family. 3. Volunteer with Alley Cat Allies Alley Cat Allies, which formed in 1990, has done amazing work to spread awareness about this problem and develop solutions for it. Through the organization you can help hold spay/neuter clinics and food/supply drives, encourage official governmental proclamations regarding TNR policies, and more.
St. Patrick’s Day is nearly here, and many are getting into the spirit to celebrate the Irish holiday! While St. Patty’s Day is typically known for fun, high energy festivities, the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center (APCC) wants to help make sure that your furry friends don’t get into too much mischief. Be wary of Shamrocks - they can cause stomach upset, drooling and head shaking when small amounts are ingested. If large amounts are ingested, there are more severe concerns such as a decrease in the blood calcium level and kidney damage. Remember, Dogs who have ingested large amounts of alcohol may have a decreased gag reflex and are at risk for aspiration pneumonia if they inhale the vomit into their lungs. Always keep your eye one your beverage and do not place it on the floor or on a low table where pets can have easy access. If you cannot always monitor your pet, it’s best to put them in a quiet, safe room until the party has come to an end. Irish soda bread is a popular food during St. Patrick’s Day celebrations. Be aware that this bread does contain raisins which can cause kidney failure in dogs. It’s best to feed furry friends they’re own veterinarian-approved healthy treats during any celebrations.

Dental disease is a serious issue in pets that affects teeth, gums, and organ health in pets. It all begins with plaque buildup containing bacteria and food particles. Signs of dental disease include broken or loose teeth, bad breath, painful and bleeding mouth, refusal, or inability to eat and drink, and drooling. Keeping up with your pet’s dental care will not only prevent tooth loss and bad breath, but it will also prevent oral pain, organ damage and any worsening dental diseases. Check out this short video showing how deep pockets can lead to painful root damage in teeth, which can be shown on a dental Xray. Interested our low-cost dental services?
