Working on recall on a long line. This pup loves frisbees so we used a frisbee to reinforce coming when called away from a frisbee! #theproficientpup #sandiegopups #sandiegodogs #recall #positivereinforcement #dogtraining #smartdog
I love this little pibble. When he first met me, he was unsure of me and hesitant to try new behaviors. Now, he offers a behavior to show his excitement for training and so his mom and I gave it a cue. What a freakinβ cutie. Iβm so proud of him. πππ #theproficientpup #tippytap #sandiegodogs #sandiegopibbles #sandiegopitties #pibblepower #pittiepower #amstaffsofinstagram #positivereinforcement #dogtraining
Puppy is learning to crate. Both teaching and learning are easier when having a good time! #positivereinforcement #tollerpuppy #puppytraining #theproficientpup
βWorking with the dog in front of youβ is figurative speech for going at your dogβs speed and capability, not your own. As teachers, we get the most success from moving at our studentβs speed. In this case, this saying is also literal. Here, I was hired to work with another dog, who is so afraid of new people that she is hiding in the bushes in the background. Fortunately, another dog in the home is a more willing participant and I can show the clients what to do with the other dog when I am not there. This dog loves this idea!! #karenpryoracademy #clickertraining #eyecontact #positivereinforcement #sandiegodogs #theproficientpup #olddogscanlearnnewthings
Another great moment for a doggie and her mom. Mom hired me to help with her pup who pulled on the leash and lunged and barked at other dogs. Training with Positive Reinforcement has taught this dog that thereβs no need to be overwhelmed by the environment, and that there are choices in reacting to worries other than lunging and barking. The same training has taught mom that she can relax more on walks. They are learning together to trust each other more and when you have trust, you have moments like these. π
Teaching this little proficient pup to ring a bell on cue is πππ.
There are three simple things you can do to help your dog stay calm while workers are at your home.
Do you know the difference between a cue and a command? This post is your cue to find out!
A quick little session with my pup. This is a fairly new behavior for her and so I click and treat frequently. I'm using Easy Cheese in a can as reinforcement, so I don't have to worry about dropping a treat accidentally and confusing the behavior. What fun little tricks have you trained your dog to do?
Would you like a kiss from your doggie? You can teach that!
Asking For Permission
I love this video. One of my clients showed me the cue they give their small dog to ask him if it's ok that he be picked up. If you've read my blog on allowing dogs to say, "no," you know why it is also important to give them the opportunity to say, "yes." Offering a cue to a dog to let them know you'd like to pick them up really helps to build trust between you and your pup. And seeing that kind of trust makes my heart happy.
Nail trimming does not have to be a battle. This pup started out not wanting her paws held, and now she offers her paws and allows me to file her nails. Decrease fear and increase confidence. It's so worth it. #positivereinforcement #dogtraining #clickertraining #karenpryoracademy #forcefreetraining #clickerexpo #theproficientpup #amstafflove
Had a fantastic tour with @avianbehavior yesterday! They train with positive reinforcement and are force-free. That means they do not starve or otherwise punish their birds to get them to fly like less-skilled and less-knowledgeable trainers do. I highly recommend their tours! #positivereinforcement #eurasianeagleowl #forcefree #avianbehaviorinternational #birdtraining #sofun
Find It
In my new Beginning Manners class in San Marcos, Mary teaches her pup how to Find It! This is one of my favorite games. Dogs love it and it has so many uses! It builds confidence, can be used as enrichment, can be used to redirect, or can be built upon to create a complex searching game. Just so fun. :-)
Nail-filing session with Charlotte. She stops when she hears street sounds. I like to allow for these moments for dogs to listen to the world and then return their focus to you. That's when you know that your training is gaining value for them. #positivereinforcement #clickertraining #karenpryoracademy #instadog #dogtraining #amstaffsofinstagram
When I stepped into his kennel, Olly stood up and moved away from me with his tail pressed tightly downward between his legs. I sat down, waited for his approach, and started a gentle massage. 15 minutes later, he was comfortable enough to lie down. Several minutes after that, he was more relaxed, even in an environment that is neither soothing nor relaxing. Can you spot what Olly does just before I shut off the camera? That makes my heart happy. π Olly is available for adoption at the Escondido campus of the San Diego Humane Society. π
Charlotte loves her new snuffle mat, made by @pamelamarxsen. I place some treats on or in the fabric and let her use her sniffer to find them! Such a good brain workout! #snufflematz #dogtraining #positivereinforcement #pibblelife #useyoursniffer
Teaching Lexie to feel comfortable in a muzzle. She had been abused by a previous owner, but her current pet parent offers lots of love and positive reinforcement, resulting in an engaged and happy (look at that tail!) pup. π#positivereinforcement #dogtraining #muzzleup #muzzleupproject #karenpryoracademy #dogsofinstagram #instadog #amstaffsofinstagram #amstafflove
Training is not always perfect. Often, you need to watch for what your dog is giving you and then change your plan so that she can succeed. This video of a quick 2-minute session shows what happened when I started training without a warm-up (we all need warm-ups!), confused my dog enough to make her give up momentarily (she was saying, "C'mon, lady! Pull it together!"), and then encouraged her to try a different way until she was back on track. We all learn by trying, both student and trainer!
One of my clients working with her dog, Marley, on pawing at a board covered with sand paper. Teaching Marley to do this means he can file his own nails. No need to force him to hold still while trying to clip them. #positivereinforcement #clickertraining #karenpryoracademy #dogtraining #instadog #instacool #theproficientpup
