Rodney Smith Jr. is on the road again, this time driving his sleigh to deck the halls of shelters across the country with donated pet food, along with his (very tall) elf friend, Yuri. Lucky us, he chose to come back to Española Humane - and he spent some time smoochin’ Cinnamon (who was just adopted!); snuggling Ham, a formerly spicy but now nicey kitten; and showcasing Chuco, our meatball marshmallow pittie who can’t wait to find a forever home!

Rodney also visited us this past spring, as he traveled around shining his light on one cause or organization in each state. We were able to tell him about our free spay/neuter program, free wellness services, our shelter pets, and about our many creative and innovative programs that help people and pets in our underserved community. When he reached out to see if he could visit us again, this time festively dressed as an elf, we said jingle your way on over here!

Rodney Smith Jr. is the founder of Raising Men & Women Lawn Care Service, a non-profit organization that provides free lawn care to people in need: seniors, the disabled, single parents, and veterans. Similar to our own commitment, Rodney’s mission is to give back to those who need it most, and he has inspired thousands of young people to also mow yards in their communities for free. His work is a testament to the transformative power of kindness, and how a single act can spark a cascade of goodwill.

Rodney has also completed several US tours to raise awareness, state by state, about issues such as cancer and veterans' issues…and the hard work of animal shelters and rescues. Thank you Rodney, for bringing your festive fun and power of positivity to our shelter! In the words of Rodney, “Never doubt that you can make a difference in this world. YOU CAN!”

Hazel just paw-roled from our Paws in the Pen training program at the Penitentiary of New Mexico … and she’s already curled up in a donut-bed of love and kisses of comfort with her new forever family. Hazel’s new dad said, “The fur on the top of your head is going to wear down with all the kisses you’re gonna get!” 🥹

After 8-weeks of 24/7 training in prison, our dogs graduate with an impressive list of cues and commands and they are also house, leash and crate trained. This transformative initiative has also changed lives on both sides of the leash—43 incarcerated individuals have participated in intensive dog training, while positively influencing dozens of prison and administrative staff, and 43 behaviorally challenged shelter dogs have graduated as “top dogs,” each finding a loving forever home. As the new leader of our pack, Kate is ready to guide with kindness, courage, and a commitment to making every tail wag. With her dedication and drive, the future looks brighter than ever for the people and pets we serve.

Kate has 15+ years of leadership experience, including her recent role as COO at Virginia Beach SPCA, and she brings expertise in fundraising, community partnerships, and program expansion — just in time for our new clinic launch!

“I am honored to join Española Humane and work with such a committed team to deepen our impact,” Kate shared. “This organization is a lifeline for animals and families, and I look forward to helping it thrive.”

The numbers are in: our shelter and clinic hosted a Black Friday free vaccine event and we tallied up the numbers….we served 143 pets and gave 230 free vaccines! 🐾🐾

🌀 Two more precious pups have checked out of our Ojo Santa Fe Puppy Patch with their forever families, bringing our adoption total to a staggering 635 puppies! We deliver puppies to the resort fresh from their foster homes and ready to indulge in a puppymoon of pampering, play, posing for photos, and plopping down for puppy naps in a sun-warmed bed.

🐶 While the four-legged floofs enjoy their five-star accommodations, Ojo’s overnight guests get to soak up the joy of puppy cuddles and heart-melting moments. It’s a win-win: our furry spa-goers unwind and recharge, while making soulful connections with guests and locals alike, who might just fall in love and welcome them into their forever homes!

Thank you to San Marcos Cafe and Feed Store for keeping our Paws in the Pen dogs well fed - they were so inspired by our prison dog training program at the Penitentiary of New Mexico, they have been donating every morsel of kibble for every dog in training this past year, and they’ve just committed to continuing this generous gesture for the new year ahead 🥹

Investigators say 1.5 year old Frankie is officially charged with unlawfully stealing hearts. This incident happened today during a training session at the Penitentiary of New Mexico in Santa Fe.

‼️Investigators are now looking for her forever home.

If you have any information on where her forever home might be, please contact Española Humane immediately! This is for the safety of all guarded hearts.

Frankie’s response to cats will be further investigated upon inspection.
