Approximately 30% of Dalmatians are deaf in one ear and 5% are deaf in both. This is caused by something known as the extreme piebald gene, which is responsible for their white coats and blue eyes! To prevent your pup from contracting parvo, it is essential to get them vaccinated. A puppy’s first set of vaccinations happen between 6 and 8 weeks old with boosters every 3-4 weeks until 16 weeks old. When your dog is brought into our clinic, they will be assessed by us and we will advise you on all follow-up dates. Always look for clinical signs of parvo in your dog, and if you notice symptoms, contact us at (802) 879-6311 to book an appointment for diagnosis. Don’t leave it until it’s too late!

It is possible for dogs to have obstructive sleep apnea. Unlike with humans, CPAP machines are not yet available for dogs. For obese dogs, it's recommended to change their diet to lose excess weight. As of 7/22/24 there are updates to CDC’s August 1 dog importation rule: If you are bringing a dog into the US from a dog rabies-free or low-risk country (ie. Canada), you now only need to fill out the CDC Dog Import Form. Other forms are no longer needed. The requirements for dogs arriving from high-risk countries have not changed, and these dogs are still required to have additional documents. Read the full requirements: www.cdc.gov/dogtravel

Please be aware of the new import rules for any dog coming to the US from Canada. This starts August 1!

Starting on August 1, 2024, dogs entering or returning to the United States must meet new, specific requirements depending on where they have been in the 6 months before entering the U.S. and where they received their rabies vaccines (if required).

It's national dog bite prevention week and we will be sharing some tips on how to keep everyone safe. Any dog can bite if provoked. They can bite as a reaction to something, if they’re startled, are scared, aren’t feeling well, or are engaged in play. Socialization and education are keys to dog bite prevention. The solar eclipse is fast approaching, and we are getting questions about how to protect pets' eyes!
Fortunately, dogs and cats do not stare directly into bright light or into the sun so there is nothing to worry about.
We still recommend keeping you pet inside, on a leash, or near you as the heavy traffic and increase in activity may startle or frighten them.
