Is your dog afflicted by noise phobias? It is estimated that at least 29% of dogs experience noise phobia or reactivity to loud noises such as thunderstorms and fireworks. Don’t let your pup suffer through it! Sileo is an oral gel given into your dogs’ cheek pouch that can help your nervous friend relax during these stressful events. With our recent storms and the 4th of July just around the corner now is the time to consider what you can do for your noise-phobic dog. Please do not hesitate to reach out to the practice via text, call or email if you would like to discuss Sileo or pick some up!

It’s Black Fly season: Black flies, also known as Buffalo gnats are very common this time of year. These bites are typically found on the parts of our dogs with less fur such as the underside or abdomen, inner thighs, ears and face. Frequently mistaken for tick bites, black flies are the only insects that produce this characteristic bullseye. While quite aggressive in appearance these bites are typically harmless but can last upwards of a couple of weeks!

Snickers the Guinea pig saw Dr. Childs recently! Guinea Pigs are a common pet we see here at Essex Vet. Snickers' breed of guinea pig is called Abyssinean. Abyssinean guinea pigs are well known for their unique coat! The swirls on an Abyssinean’s coat are called rosettes and these little piggies typically have 8-10 rosettes that cover their body and create their one of a kind hairdos!

Today is Animal Disaster Preparedness day! While we never want to end up in an emergency situation with our pets, preparedness is key to preventing tragedy.

Utilizing a go-kit or bag can help relieve some of the stress of an emergency before it happens! Also be sure to create an evacuation plan that includes safe places you can go with your pets such a hotels or shelters that are pet friendly.

Recently we have seen a marked increase in the number of counterfeit seresto collars at the practice. These collars are being purchased from a multitude of online stores such as Amazon and Walmart along with some other online “pet pharmacies” so we have created this infographic to help you deduce if your collar is real or fake.

Starting with the top of the tin there are a few things you will notice. The FAKE collars have the same imagery but in poorer quality and is usually zoomed in, Bayer brands are typically used (Elanco is the current, correct brand), and typically do not have the active ingredients listed on the top side.

On the side of the FAKE tins you will notice a QR code - DO NOT SCAN IT. The QR codes typically contain malware that downloads onto your phone. Real seresto collars do not have a QR code on the tin. The sides typically also have the incorrect Bayer branding.

On the bottom of the tin of the FAKE collars you will find an expiration date and more bayer logos. Real seresto collars do not have expiration dates on the tin.

If you are unsure about the validity of your pets collar we are happy to take a look. You can also call Elanco at 1-877-352-6261 and check the lot number directly on the collar if you no longer have the tin. Please note that if you have purchased a seresto collar directly through the practice this notice does not apply to you as we purchase our collars directly from Elanco!

As a general rule of thumb, if the deal is too good, it’s probably for a reason!

Yana the Black Russian Terrier visited with Dr. Smets for the first time last week - she was a real treasure!

Black Russian Terriers were developed as military dogs in the 1930’s Soviet Union. Their name itself is misleading though, as these beautiful dogs are not terriers at all! The main breeds influencing their genetic makeup are Giant Schnauzers, Rottweilers and Airedale terriers. These highly trainable, high drive dogs are few and far between in the US so it was a real pleasure to meet sweet and gentle Yana!

As Valentine’s Day rolls around so does one of our most common toxicities in dogs - chocolate ingestion.
Chocolate contains caffeine and theobromine which overstimulates your pets nervous system and cardiovascular system.
The outcome of chocolate toxicity depends on the amount and type ingested, your dog’s weight and how quickly it was caught. Darker and more bitter chocolates are more toxic to dogs but all forms carry risk.
Keep your chocolates, candies and flowers up and away from your pets to prevent ingestion.
