Equine Sports Medicine & Chiropractic Care

Equine Sports Medicine & Chiropractic Care Dr. Mitch also takes an integrative approach to the diagnosis and treatment of horses under his care.

Dr. Mitch Lowrey utilizes his years of experience, in conjunction with both traditional and nontraditional diagnosis and treatment modalities, to prevent and treat lameness and soundness issues in performance horses, as well as assist owners in the overall care and well-being of their equine athletes. Unlike most general practitioners, who often times don't have the time, education or experience t

o successfully treat lameness issue or gait abnormalities, Dr. Mitch has limited the focus of the practice so he is able to dedicate ample time to each horse under his care, rather than offer simple quick fixes. Dr. Mitch also strongly believes in continuing education, and is dedicated to staying current in the newest technologies and latest developments in the fields of sports medicine and chiropractic care. Going far above the required hours necessary to maintain the veterinary licenses he holds in Georgia, South Carolina and Florida, Dr. Mitch attends meetings and conferences specifically focused on sport and performance horse medicine on nearly a monthly basis. He is not only certified in Animal Chiropractic, attending one of the only three accredited schools in the US, but is also certified in Medical Acupuncture for Veterinarians, attending advanced courses at the Chi Institute as well as Colorado State University. Equine Sports Medicine & Chiropractic Care is primarily an ambulatory practice, but we do offer appointments at our farm in Estill, SC for those clients wishing to haul in for services. We are also able to accommodate layover needs for clients coming in from out of state. In addition to veterinary and chiropractic services, our farm also serves as a location for horses to retire, recover or rehabilitate. We accept only a limited number of outside horses who's daily needs are met firsthand by Dr. Mitch, alongside our personal horses, in a secure, peaceful, non-clinical setting.

Did You Know We Provide Remote Consultations?

Dr. Mitch provides second opinion diagnostic evaluations for clients who are not within travel range, but who still want access to his veterinary expertise. He cooperates with the client’s local veterinarian to obtain imaging or video when he is unable to do so personally and provides analysis of the imaging data.

Dr. Mitch will also perform video analysis of dynamic examinations where it is not possible for him to be on site himself for an in-person exam.

Contact us if you are interested in a second opinion on a pre-purchase or lameness evaluation or for a review of existing diagnostics.

Here is an update and information on additional EIA cases in SC:

Clemson Livestock Poultry Health received laboratory notification confirmation from NVSL of 2 additional cases of EIA in South Carolina.

A 3 yr old QH Gelding and a 3 yr QH Filly both tested positive in Barnwell County.

Thus far, all the positive cases have been associated with Bush Track Quarter Horse racing. Clemson LPH and SC USDA veterinarians are actively investigating any other cases that might exist.

In these cases, it appears the disease has spread from sharing needles between horses.

FYI for our South Carolina Friends and Followers:

Clemson Livestock Poultry Health has received Laboratory Confirmation from NVSL of 3 positive test results for Equine Infectious Anemia in SC.

The first case is in a 4 yr. old QH Gelding in Berkeley County that was euthanized on Tuesday, and the owner of two positive contact cases identified in a follow-up investigation in Barnwell County are discussing their options with LPH.

The horses in Barnwell County are a 6 yr. old QH Gelding and a 10 yr. old QH Gelding.

The investigation is ongoing looking for additional contact animals. CULPH and USDA veterinarians are working diligently in finding any additional positive horses in order to protect the horse population of South Carolina.

Please remember the necessity to have a current negative Coggins test annually.
